The business in plain English
Weatherford International is an energy services company incorporated in Ireland and based in Houston. It sells equipment and services for the whole life of an oil or gas well: drilling, testing the rock, building and finishing the well, keeping it producing, and sealing it at the end. It works in about 75 countries from roughly 305 locations. Nearly all its customers are energy companies, from national oil companies to independent producers. Its main rivals are SLB, Halliburton, Baker Hughes and Expro Group.
Revenue for the year ended December 31, 2025 was $4.92 billion, split across three segments. Well Construction and Completions was the largest at 38.1%. It runs and connects pipe in wells and sells cementing gear, safety valves and packers (seals that isolate parts of a well). Drilling and Evaluation, at 27.9%, steers drill bits, controls well pressure, measures rock with tools lowered on a cable (called wireline) and supplies drilling fluids. Production and Intervention, at 27.2%, sells pumps that lift oil from wells without enough natural pressure, along with repair and plugging services and monitoring software.
Services brought in about 60.6% of that revenue and product sales 39.4%. Most sales came from outside North America: the Middle East, North Africa and Asia brought in 43%, North America 20%, Europe, Sub-Saharan Africa and Russia 18.7%, and Latin America 18.3%.

What could go wrong
- Money owed is concentrated in one customer. A large part of the money owed to Weatherford is tied to a single customer. If that customer cuts orders or runs into financial trouble, results and cash flow could suffer.
- Most sales come from outside North America. Weatherford operates in about 75 countries, and the Middle East, North Africa and Asia alone brought in 43% of fiscal 2025 revenue. Unrest, armed conflict, sanctions or tariff changes could disrupt work or supplies.
- Customer budgets swing with oil and gas prices. Weatherford earns money when oil and gas producers drill and maintain wells. When energy prices fall or borrowing gets costly, customers cut budgets. That can shrink Weatherford's sales and the prices it can charge.
- Debt can limit flexibility. Weatherford had $1.48 billion of debt and $1.16 billion of cash as of September 30, 2026. Loan terms can restrict its plans, and debt payments take cash away from operations.
- Accidents may not be fully covered. A well blowout, fire or spill can cause deaths, injuries and pollution. Contracts and insurance may not cover every loss, uninsured lawsuits could be costly, and insurance premiums may rise.
- Shift away from fossil fuels. Climate rules and wider use of renewable energy and electric vehicles could reduce drilling for oil and gas. That could cut demand for Weatherford's services or force costly changes to how it operates.

For income and retirement investors
Weatherford has only a short dividend history. Payments began in fiscal 2024 at $0.50 per share and rose to $1.00 in fiscal 2025. The 10-K filed February 4, 2026 says the annual rate was raised to $1.10. Fiscal 2025 dividends used about 16.7% of earnings and 16% of free cash flow (cash left after capital spending). The yield was a modest 1.23% as of October 28, 2026. The company bought back $99 million of stock in fiscal 2024 and $101 million in fiscal 2025 under a $500 million three-year plan. Even so, the share count rose 3.3% from October 2021 to October 2026.
The price record covers about four years, so it misses the 2008 crisis, the 2020 COVID crash and the 2022 bear market. In that time the stock gained 92.12% in 2023 and lost 26.41% in 2024. At one point it sat 70.6% below its peak during the three years to October 28, 2026. A single stock carries more risk than a diversified fund.
Questions investors ask
How does Weatherford make money?
Weatherford makes money by selling equipment and services that oil and gas producers use at every stage of a well's life, from drilling to final plugging. In fiscal 2025, services brought in 60.6% of its $4.92 billion revenue and product sales 39.4%. Well Construction and Completions was the largest segment at 38.1%. Drilling and Evaluation followed at 27.9% and Production and Intervention at 27.2%. The Middle East, North Africa and Asia supplied 43% of revenue.
Does Weatherford pay a dividend?
Yes. Weatherford began paying dividends in fiscal 2024, with $0.50 per share for that year, and paid $1.00 per share in fiscal 2025. Its 10-K filed February 4, 2026 says the annual rate was raised to $1.10. The yield was 1.23% as of October 28, 2026, and fiscal 2025 dividends used about 16.7% of earnings. The company also buys back stock under a $500 million, three-year program introduced in 2024.
Is Weatherford an Irish or American company?
Weatherford is legally Irish but run from the United States. Weatherford International plc is incorporated in Ireland, its main offices are in Houston, Texas, and its shares trade on Nasdaq. Irish law governs shareholder rights. The company warns that this may give less protection than US law and could make US securities claims harder to enforce. It also flags a risk that the US could treat the Irish parent company as a US taxpayer under Section 7874 of the tax code.
Who are Weatherford's main competitors?
Weatherford's main competitors are SLB, Halliburton, Baker Hughes and Expro Group Holdings, according to its 10-K. It also competes with smaller suppliers that offer only part of its product range, either locally or globally. Customers choose on performance, safety, quality, reliability, service, price and response time. The company says the energy services business is highly competitive, and that mergers among rivals are hard to predict and could affect its results.
What is Weatherford's P/E ratio?
About 15. That was Weatherford's price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio as of October 28, 2026, based on fiscal 2025 earnings of $5.93 per diluted share. The P/E shows how many dollars investors pay for each dollar of yearly profit. Those earnings were down from $6.75 in fiscal 2024, and revenue fell 10.8% in fiscal 2025. In the quarter ended September 30, 2026, revenue was 7.2% lower than a year earlier, while net income rose 48.1%.
