The short version

The BondBloxx Bloomberg Seven Year Target Duration US Treasury ETF (XSVN) tracks a Bloomberg index of U.S. Treasury notes. The index is held near a seven-year duration, which is a measure of how much a bond's price reacts to interest-rate changes. Its 0.05% expense ratio is the same as GOVT's and a third of the 0.15% charged by IEF, its closest match by maturity. The trade-off is size: it had about $389 million in net assets as of July 31, 2026.

How it works

XSVN tracks the Bloomberg US Treasury Seven Year Target Duration Index. The index starts from the broader Bloomberg US Treasury Index, which held about 295 Treasury issues with at least a year left to maturity as of December 31, 2025. It takes notes and bonds from two groups: those with durations of 5 to 7 years and those with durations of 7 to 9 years. Within each group, bonds are weighted by market value. The two groups are then blended so the index's overall duration lands on 7 years. The index resets on the last business day of each month. It had about 38 bonds as of December 31, 2025.

BondBloxx uses "representative sampling." That means it may hold a sample of bonds with traits that match the index instead of every bond in it. At least 80% of net assets go into Treasuries averaging about seven years of duration. Up to 20% can go into other government securities or cash. The fund doesn't try to beat the index or turn defensive in a sell-off. Portfolio turnover was 62%.

As of July 31, 2026, the fund held 39 positions, and the 10 largest made up about 72% of assets. The three largest were the 4.125% note due February 2036 (11.3%), the 4% note due November 2035 (11.3%) and the 4.625% note due February 2035 (10.8%). The average maturity was 8.4 years and the average coupon was 4.09%.

What it really costs

  • XSVN charges 0.05% a year, versus an average of 0.1% for the similar funds below (3rd of 8, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $5 in the first year and $64 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
XSVN$5$16$28$64
SEC standard example: $10,000 invested, 5% annual return, shares sold at the end of each period.

Structure and tax notes

  • Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.

In a retirement portfolio

RoleDiversifier

It holds only U.S. Treasuries, and over the past year its moves had little connection to the stock market's, so it can balance a stock-heavy portfolio.

XSVN offers high-quality government bonds that moved largely independently of stocks. Its beta, a measure of how closely it moves with the stock market, was 0.11 for the year ended October 27, 2026. It pays monthly. Its trailing 12-month yield was 4.13% as of that date. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested costs $64 in fees over 10 years.

Its track record is short. The fund launched in September 2022, too late to show how it handled 2008, 2020 or the full 2022 bear market. Its deepest drop was 9.4%, from May 4 to October 19, 2023, and it didn't recover until July 31, 2024. Its weakest calendar year was 2024, at -0.5%. Someone who has to sell shares for income while rates are rising could lock in losses. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want only U.S. Treasuries, with interest-rate sensitivity held near seven years by a monthly rebalance.
  • Cost-conscious holders: its 0.05% expense ratio is a third of IEF's 0.15%, and IEF has the same 8.4-year average maturity.
  • People who want monthly income from government bonds; the trailing 12-month yield was 4.13% as of October 27, 2026.

Look elsewhere if

  • Anyone uneasy with price drops when rates rise; it fell 9.4% in 2023 and didn't recover until July 2024.
  • Investors who prefer a large fund; at about $389 million, it's the smallest of the eight Treasury funds compared here.
  • Those wanting less rate risk at lower cost; VGIT charges 0.03% and has a shorter 5.5-year average maturity.

Questions investors ask

Does XSVN pay monthly dividends?

Yes. XSVN pays income every month, mostly from the interest on the Treasury notes it holds. Over the 12 months through October 27, 2026, it paid about $1.88 per share, a trailing yield of 4.13%. The payments can change from month to month. The fund's average coupon was 4.09% as of July 31, 2026, but its yield will move as bonds are bought and sold.

What's the difference between XSVN and IEF?

Both hold U.S. Treasuries with an average maturity of about 8.4 years, making IEF the closest match among similar funds. XSVN charges 0.05% a year, compared with 0.15% for IEF. XSVN also keeps its duration near seven years by blending two duration groups. IEF is far larger, at about $41.8 billion as of August 31, 2026, against about $389 million for XSVN. IEF returned -1.4% over one year as of October 30, 2026. XSVN returned -2.6% as of October 27.

What is XSVN's expense ratio?

XSVN's expense ratio is 0.05% a year, according to its prospectus filed February 27, 2026. The similar funds compared here average 0.10%. In the SEC's standard example ($10,000 invested, 5% annual return, shares sold at the end of each period), total costs would be $5 after one year, $16 after three, $28 after five and $64 after ten. Vanguard's VGIT is cheaper at 0.03% but holds shorter bonds.

Why has XSVN lost money over the past year?

XSVN returned -2.6% for the year ended October 27, 2026, and -2.2% for 2026 through that date. Bond prices move opposite to interest rates. A fund held near seven years of duration feels rate changes much more than a short-term fund. Over the same period, the short-term VGSH gained 2.2%, as of October 30, 2026. Over longer periods XSVN has done better: 4.3% a year over three years, and 8.3% for 2025.

Can you lose money in a Treasury ETF like XSVN?

Yes. The U.S. government backs its Treasuries with its "full faith and credit," which keeps default risk low. But prices still fall when interest rates rise. XSVN's deepest drop was 9.4%, from May 4 to October 19, 2023, and it didn't get back to its earlier peak until July 31, 2024. Its worst quarter was -4.42%, in the fourth quarter of 2024. The prospectus also warns that inflation can erode the value of its income.
