The short version

SPDR FactSet Innovative Technology ETF (XITK) tracks the FactSet Innovative Technology Index. The index holds up to 100 US-listed tech and electronic media stocks from the fastest-growing parts of the industry, in equal weights. Equal weighting means lesser-known names such as AXT start with about the same weight as AMD, and the fund has swung hard: it lost 47.5% in 2022. It costs 0.45% a year, against a 0.34% average for similar funds.

What changed recently

  • Over the three months to Jun 30, 2026, investors withdrew a net $1.9M (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +17.02%, +16.80%, -2.41%.

How it works

XITK aims to match the FactSet Innovative Technology Index, built by FactSet Research Systems. FactSet sorts technology and electronic media companies (firms that sell digital content online) into a detailed industry map called the FactSet Revere Hierarchy. It then picks the sub-industries that score in the top quarter for revenue growth. To qualify, a company must trade in the US, either as a stock or as an American Depositary Receipt (ADR, a US-traded share of a foreign company). It also needs a float-adjusted market value above $500 million, or above $400 million with heavier trading. Recent IPOs are left out for three months.

The index holds at least 50 and no more than 100 stocks, all at equal weights. It resets once a year, after the close on the third Friday of December. Between resets, winners grow and losers shrink. As of June 30, 2026, the fund held 98 stocks, yet AXT had grown to 4.6% of assets and Applied Optoelectronics to 4.4%. The top 10 made up 30.3%.

SSGA Funds Management, State Street's adviser, uses sampling, so it doesn't have to hold every index stock. It keeps at least 80% of assets in index securities and may use futures and cash for day-to-day management. Portfolio turnover was 71%, so much of the portfolio changes each year.

What it really costs

  • XITK charges 0.45% a year, versus an average of 0.34% for the similar funds below (5th of 7, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $46 in the first year and $567 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
XITK$46$144$252$567

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

This is a concentrated, equal-weighted bet on fast-growing tech niches, with no income and a record of deep losses, so it fits at most a small slice of a diversified portfolio.

XITK could add exposure to smaller, faster-growing tech companies that broad index funds hold only in small amounts. That exposure comes with heavy risk. The fund launched in 2016, after the 2008 crisis, and its price history starts in June 2020, after the COVID crash, though it gained 89.8% for 2020 as a whole. In the 2022 bear market it fell 49.8% and took 28 months, until February 2025, to recover. Its worst calendar year was 2022, at -47.5%. Its deepest drop, 65.6% from February 2021 to November 2022, had not been recovered as of October 27, 2026. Anyone forced to sell during a stretch like that would lock in steep losses. It paid no income over the past year. It costs 0.45% a year, or $46 on $10,000 in the first year. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want a small, deliberate stake in fast-growing tech companies such as AXT, Applied Optoelectronics and DigitalOcean, rather than in the largest tech giants.
  • People who prefer equal weighting, where each of up to 100 stocks resets to a similar size every December.
  • Long-term holders who can sit through drops like 2022's 47.5% loss and don't need the fund to pay them income.

Look elsewhere if

  • Retirees who need income: XITK paid no distributions in the year to October 27, 2026.
  • Cost-focused investors: its 0.45% expense ratio is above the 0.34% similar-fund average, and SPDR's broad SPTM charges 0.03%.
  • Anyone who may need to sell in a downturn: its 65.6% deepest drop had not been recovered as of October 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask

Is XITK good for retirement?

XITK is a higher-risk fund that fits at most a small part of a retirement portfolio. It fell 47.5% in 2022. Its deepest drop, 65.6% from February 2021 to November 2022, had not been recovered as of October 27, 2026. It paid no income over the past year and charges 0.45% a year. Retirees drawing on their savings may find swings that large hard to ride out in a bad year.

Does XITK pay dividends?

No. XITK paid no distributions in the 12 months through October 27, 2026, so its trailing yield was 0%. That fits what it owns: fast-growing technology companies such as AXT, Applied Optoelectronics and DigitalOcean, which tend to put profits back into the business instead of paying them out. Any return from XITK comes from changes in its share price, so investors who want regular income would need to get it from other holdings.

What's the difference between XITK and XSW?

Both are SPDR ETFs from State Street, but they follow different indexes. XSW focuses on software and services companies. XITK's FactSet index also includes hardware, chip and electronic media companies. Of the similar funds, XSW shares the most holdings with XITK, but the overlap is limited. XSW costs 0.35% a year against XITK's 0.45%. It is also bigger, with $402 million in net assets against $68 million as of June 30, 2026. As of October 27, 2026, XSW returned 5.6% over one year and XITK returned 2.4%.

What are XITK's top holdings?

As of June 30, 2026, XITK's largest holdings were AXT (4.6%), Applied Optoelectronics (4.4%), Silicon Motion Technology (3.6%), DigitalOcean (3.1%), ACM Research (3.1%), Advanced Micro Devices (2.6%) and ARM Holdings (2.6%). The top 10 made up 30.3% of the fund, which held 98 stocks. The index sets every stock to an equal weight only at its December reset, so larger weights usually reflect price moves since then. The list can change a lot from one year to the next.

How has XITK performed over the long term?

Its results have been uneven. According to its prospectus, XITK returned an average of 14.22% a year over the 10 years to December 31, 2025. Over five years it averaged -3.65% a year, and over one year it returned 2.41%. Calendar years ranged from an 89.82% gain in 2020 to a 47.49% loss in 2022. Its strongest quarter gained 47.04% and its weakest lost 29.49%. Past returns don't predict future results.
