How it works
VSHY does not track an index. Its sub-adviser, Newfleet Asset Management, a division of Virtus Fixed Income Advisers, chooses the bonds. Under normal conditions it keeps at least 80% of net assets in high-yield bonds and other debt, and it tries to hold duration between one and three years. Duration measures how much bond prices react to interest-rate changes, so a shorter duration means smaller swings. Average maturity was 5.4 years as of July 31, 2026. Duration is shorter than maturity for bonds that pay interest along the way.
As of July 31, 2026, the fund held 200 positions, with 97.3% in corporate bonds. The top 10 made up 11.33% of assets. The largest were bonds from Blue Owl Credit Income Corp., Sunoco and Alliance Resource Operating Partners. The prospectus noted an energy focus as of July 31, 2025, and energy issuers such as Hilcorp and Buckeye Partners appear in the top 10. Most of the biggest holdings are Rule 144A bonds. These are issued privately to large institutions and can be harder to trade.
The prospectus also permits floating-rate bank loans, whose interest rates reset with market rates. It also allows emerging-market debt, other high-yield ETFs and derivatives such as options, futures and swaps. The July 31, 2026 holdings report showed no derivatives or other funds. Portfolio turnover of 71% points to frequent trading.
What it really costs
- VSHY charges 0.39% a year, versus an average of 0.35% for the similar funds below (4th of 8, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $40 in the first year and $493 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| VSHY | $40 | $125 | $219 | $493 |
Structure and tax notes
- Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.
In a retirement portfolio
It pays monthly from a portfolio of short-duration junk bonds, with a trailing 12-month yield of 6.32% as of October 27, 2026, but carries more credit risk than investment-grade bond funds.
VSHY could add monthly income: its trailing 12-month yield was 6.32% as of October 27, 2026. The trade-off is credit risk. The fund launched in December 2016, so it has no record from the 2008 crisis. It gained 5.4% for 2020 as a whole. It lost 10.13% in 2022, its worst calendar year, including a 10.1% drop in the quarter ending June 30, 2022. It rebounded 12.53% in 2023. Since late November 2023, its deepest fall was 4.6%, from February 28 to April 8, 2025, and it recovered by May 20, 2025. Anyone cashing out shares to cover spending in a year like 2022 would have locked in losses.
Its expense ratio is 0.39%, about $40 in the first year on $10,000 under the SEC's standard example. That is above the 0.35% average for similar funds. Past results don't predict future returns, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors seeking monthly income from junk bonds; the trailing 12-month yield was 6.32% as of October 27, 2026.
- Those who want an active manager choosing bonds instead of an index, with interest-rate risk limited by a one-to-three-year duration target.
- Investors who can accept credit risk and setbacks like 2022's 10.13% loss, which was followed by a 12.53% gain in 2023.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors: SPDR Portfolio High Yield Bond ETF (SPHY) and Xtrackers USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (HYLB) charge 0.05%, versus VSHY's 0.39%.
- Savers who need steady principal for near-term spending: VSHY lost 10.1% in the quarter ending June 30, 2022.
- Those wary of concentration or small funds: it leaned toward energy issuers and had just $31.4 million in assets as of July 31, 2026.

Questions investors ask
Does VSHY pay monthly dividends?
Yes. VSHY pays distributions monthly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $1.35 per share, a trailing yield of 6.32%. The money comes from interest on the junk bonds it holds, so the amount can change from month to month. The prospectus warns that income may vary widely. It could also fall if maturing bonds are replaced with lower-yielding ones.
Is VSHY good for retirement income?
It may suit retirees who want monthly income and can accept junk-bond risk. The trailing 12-month yield was 6.32% as of October 27, 2026. The fund's one-to-three-year duration target is meant to limit how much rising interest rates can hurt it. Credit risk is the catch: it lost 10.13% in 2022. Over the five years to December 31, 2024, it returned 3.87% a year on average. Its 0.39% expense ratio also trims returns.
What's the difference between VSHY and SPHY?
The biggest differences are cost and size. SPHY, the SPDR Portfolio High Yield Bond ETF, charges 0.05% a year versus VSHY's 0.39%. SPHY had about $11.3 billion in assets as of June 30, 2026, against VSHY's $31.4 million as of July 31, 2026. VSHY is actively managed by Newfleet and aims for a one-to-three-year duration. Even so, both funds reported a 5.4-year average maturity in mid-2026. Over the year to October 27, 2026, VSHY returned 3.1% and SPHY 1.8%.
How risky is VSHY?
VSHY is riskier than investment-grade bond funds because it holds junk bonds, whose issuers are more likely to default. It lost 10.13% in 2022 and 1.9% in 2018. Its worst quarter was a 10.1% drop ending June 30, 2022. Most of the time, swings have been smaller. One-year volatility, a gauge of how much returns bounce around, was 3.5% as of October 27, 2026. Since late November 2023, its deepest decline was 4.6%, and it recovered within about 1.4 months. A tilt toward energy issuers and privately placed bonds adds risk.
What is VSHY's expense ratio?
VSHY's expense ratio is 0.39% a year, all of it the management fee. In the SEC's standard example, a $10,000 investment earning 5% a year would cost about $40 in fees over one year, $219 over five years and $493 over ten. That is above the 0.35% average for similar funds. It is near JNK's 0.40%, below HYG's 0.49%, and well above the 0.05% charged by SPHY and HYLB.
