How it works
UPGR, an Xtrackers ETF from Deutsche Bank AG, tracks the Solactive United States Green Infrastructure ESG Screened Index. From a broad US stock index, Solactive keeps US-headquartered companies with a free-float market value (the value of shares open to public trading) of at least $100 million and at least $1 million in average daily trading. Each must earn most of its revenue from green energy, green fuel, green power, green mobility (such as electric vehicles and batteries), environmental services or pollution control, based on FactSet industry data.
Sustainalytics data screens out companies that break United Nations Global Compact principles, have an ESG (environmental, social and governance) risk score of 40 or higher, are involved in controversial weapons or civilian firearms, or exceed set revenue or ownership limits in tobacco, thermal coal, oil and gas, or conventional weapons. The index takes the 50 largest remaining companies, with no more than 10 per industry category.
Each stock gets an equal weight at the quarterly reset, so smaller firms count as much as larger ones. Weights drift as prices move: as of May 29, 2026, FuelCell Energy was 6.2% of the fund. It normally holds every index stock in index proportions (full replication), though it may use a representative sample. Its yearly turnover (share of holdings replaced) was 50%.
What it really costs
- UPGR charges 0.35% a year, versus an average of 0.53% for the similar funds below (1st of 7, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $36 in the first year and $443 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UPGR | $36 | $113 | $197 | $443 |
In a retirement portfolio
It is a narrow, equal-weighted bet on US green energy stocks that tended to move about 1.7 times as much as the broad market in the year through October 27, 2026.
UPGR could add focused exposure to US green energy and environmental companies. It launched in July 2023, so it has no record in the 2008, 2020 or 2022 downturns. Its own history is bumpy: it fell 46.6% from July 18, 2023, to April 8, 2025, and did not regain that peak until October 6, 2025. Its worst calendar year was 2024, a 14.6% loss, before a 35.1% gain in 2025. Anyone forced to cash out shares near the 2025 low would have locked in a deep loss.
The trailing 12-month yield was about 3% as of October 27, 2026, paid twice a year, but payouts from a fund like this can vary. The 0.35% annual fee works out to $443 over 10 years in the SEC's standard $10,000 example. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want a targeted stake in US green energy names such as FuelCell Energy, First Solar and Plug Power, for 0.35% a year.
- Those who prefer equal weighting, so smaller clean-energy firms get the same starting weight as larger ones at each quarterly reset.
- Investors who want ESG screens that exclude companies with set levels of involvement in oil and gas, thermal coal, tobacco or weapons.
Look elsewhere if
- Anyone who might need the money within a few years: the fund fell 46.6% between July 2023 and April 2025.
- Investors wary of tiny funds: UPGR had about $6.5 million in assets as of May 29, 2026, the smallest among seven similar funds compared.
- Those wanting broad diversification: UPGR holds one narrow theme and trailed all six similar funds compared over one and three years through October 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask
What does UPGR invest in?
UPGR invests in US companies tied to green energy and sustainable infrastructure. It tracks the Solactive United States Green Infrastructure ESG Screened Index, which selects up to 50 companies in fields such as green energy, green fuel, electric vehicles and batteries, and environmental services, then weights them equally. As of May 29, 2026, it held 45 companies, led by FuelCell Energy (6.2%), PureCycle Technologies (4.3%), Shoals Technologies (3.4%), Bloom Energy (3.4%) and First Solar (2.9%).
What is UPGR's expense ratio?
UPGR's expense ratio, the annual fee taken from fund assets, is 0.35%, according to its prospectus filed September 25, 2026. That ties for the lowest among seven similar funds compared. The other six average 0.53%, and QCLN charges 0.59%. In the SEC's standard example of $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return, costs would total about $36 after one year, $197 after five years and $443 after 10 years.
UPGR vs QCLN: what's the difference?
UPGR is cheaper and far smaller than QCLN, the First Trust NASDAQ Clean Edge Green Energy Index Fund, which had the closest holdings overlap among the funds compared. UPGR charges 0.35% versus 0.59%. It held about $6.5 million as of May 29, 2026, against QCLN's $837 million as of June 30, 2026. QCLN did better over the periods compared. Through October 27, 2026, it returned -2% over one year versus UPGR's -17.1%, and 9.8% a year over three years versus 7.6%.
Does UPGR pay dividends?
Yes. UPGR makes distributions twice a year. As of October 27, 2026, its trailing 12-month payout was $0.62 per share, a yield of about 3%. That figure looks back, not forward, and payouts from a stock fund like this can change from one payment to the next. Income is not the fund's stated goal: its objective is to track the Solactive United States Green Infrastructure ESG Screened Index, before fees and expenses.
Is UPGR good for retirement?
UPGR is better viewed as a small, higher-risk add-on than a core retirement holding. It launched in July 2023, so it has no record in the 2008, 2020 or 2022 downturns. From July 18, 2023, to April 8, 2025, it fell 46.6%, recovering by October 6, 2025. Its strongest quarter was a 27.1% gain and its weakest a 15.5% loss, both in 2025. In the year through October 27, 2026, it tended to move about 1.7 times as much as the broad market (a beta of 1.74).
