How it works

TCHI is an index fund managed by BlackRock Fund Advisors (BFA). It tracks the MSCI China Technology Sub-Industries Select Capped Index. MSCI builds that index from the MSCI China Index, which covers the top 85% of China's stock market by value. The parent index includes mainland A-shares, Hong Kong-listed shares and US-listed American Depositary Receipts. MSCI keeps only companies in 24 technology-related industries across six sectors: communication services, consumer discretionary, financials, healthcare, industrials and information technology. As of August 31, 2025, the index held 160 companies.

Stocks are weighted by free float market value, which counts only the shares that investors outside China can actually buy. At each quarterly rebalance, no single corporate group can exceed 4% of the index. Related companies count together toward that limit. Weights can drift between reviews, and the fund does not have to match the index exactly. As of August 31, 2026, Lenovo made up 6.6% of the fund.

BFA uses representative sampling. This means it holds a group of stocks that resembles the index rather than every member. At least 80% of assets go into index stocks or their depositary receipts. Up to 20% can go into futures, options, swaps, cash and other securities. As of August 31, 2026, the fund held a small MSCI China futures position worth about 0.01% of assets. The fund may also lend out up to one-third of its assets.

What it really costs

  • TCHI charges 0.59% a year, versus an average of 0.6% for the similar funds below (2nd of 8, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $60 in the first year and $738 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
TCHI$60$189$329$738

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It is a small fund concentrated in one country and one theme, and it once fell 40.1%, so it suits a minor side position rather than a portfolio's foundation.

TCHI adds Chinese technology companies such as Lenovo, NetEase and Tencent, which most US-focused portfolios lack. It launched in January 2022, so it has no record from the 2008 or 2020 crashes. Its deepest drop was 40.1%, from March to October 2022. It took about 23.5 months to recover, in October 2024. Its worst calendar year was 2023, at -5.5%, yet it fell 27.2% in the 12 months to October 27, 2026. Someone who had to sell shares during a slump like that would lock in large losses.

The fund yielded 2.9% over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, and pays twice a year. It costs 0.59% a year, or $60 on $10,000 in the first year under the SEC's standard example. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want Chinese tech beyond internet stocks, including PC maker Lenovo, chipmaker Hua Hong Semiconductor and battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology.
  • Investors who can hold through steep drops. The fund fell 40.1% in 2022 and needed about 23.5 months to recover.
  • Holders of a small satellite position who want a 0.59% fee, lower than KWEB's 0.70% and CQQQ's 0.65%, plus income paid twice a year.

Look elsewhere if

  • Retirees who may need to sell in a bad year. The fund lost 27.2% in the 12 months to October 27, 2026.
  • Cost-focused investors who are open to broader China funds. WisdomTree's CXSE charges 0.32% and shares about 40% of its holdings with TCHI.
  • Investors wary of very small funds. TCHI held $44.7 million as of August 31, 2026, the smallest of the eight similar funds compared.

Questions investors ask

Is TCHI good for retirement?

TCHI works more like a small, higher-risk add-on than a core retirement holding. It owns only Chinese technology-related stocks, so its results depend on one country and one theme. It dropped 40.1% from March to October 2022 and took about 23.5 months to recover. It also fell 27.2% in the year to October 27, 2026. It does pay some income, with a 2.9% yield over the prior 12 months, and it charges 0.59% a year.

What's the difference between TCHI and CQQQ?

Both funds hold Chinese technology stocks, and about 45% of their holdings overlap. TCHI tracks an MSCI index that covers 24 tech-related industries and caps each corporate group at 4%. CQQQ charges 0.65% versus TCHI's 0.59%. It is also much larger: $3.05 billion as of July 31, 2026, against TCHI's $44.7 million as of August 31, 2026. As of October 27, 2026, TCHI's one-year return was -27.2% and CQQQ's was -30.4%.

Does TCHI pay dividends?

Yes. TCHI pays dividends twice a year. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $0.54 per share, a yield of 2.9%. The payments come from the companies it owns, so the amount can change from one payment to the next. Income is not the fund's goal. It aims to track a technology index, and price swings usually matter far more to total results than the dividend does.

What are TCHI's top holdings?

As of August 31, 2026, TCHI's largest holdings were Lenovo Group (6.6%), NetEase (4.5%), Tencent (4.0%), Xiaomi (3.8%), JD.com (3.7%), PDD Holdings (3.6%) and Alibaba (3.5%). Baidu, Kuaishou Technology and Hua Hong Semiconductor completed the top 10, which made up 38% of the fund. It held 192 stocks in all. Many are Chinese firms incorporated in the Cayman Islands, which accounted for about 43% of the fund.

How has TCHI performed since launch?

TCHI's record since its January 2022 launch has been uneven. Its prospectus shows a 5.69% loss in 2023 and a 9.08% gain in 2024. Its average annual return from inception through December 31, 2024, was -8.02%. Based on price, it gained 33.15% in 2025 but was down 20.05% for 2026 through October 27. Its three-year average annual return was 7.5% as of that date.
