  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +5.08%, +1.80%, -0.54%.

How it works

The fund tracks the MSCI EAFE Factor Mix A-Series Index, which MSCI builds and maintains. It covers large and mid-sized companies in 21 developed countries across Europe, Australasia and the Far East (EAFE). The index combines three MSCI indexes in equal thirds. The value index tilts toward cheaper stocks. The minimum volatility index aims for the smallest overall price swings within set limits. The quality index favors companies with high return on equity (profit compared with shareholders' money), steady earnings growth and little debt. A stock's weight depends on its weight in each of the three indexes.

The index goes back to equal thirds twice a year, usually at the close of the last business day of May and November. It held 694 stocks as of November 30, 2025. State Street's adviser, SSGA Funds Management, uses sampling. That means it can buy a representative subset of index stocks instead of every one. It keeps at least 80% of assets in index stocks or depositary receipts (certificates that stand for foreign shares). It may use futures contracts to manage cash.

As of June 30, 2026, the fund held 643 issuers. The 10 largest made up about 15% of assets, led by ASML, Novartis and AstraZeneca. Japan (21.8%), the UK (14.4%) and Switzerland (12.5%) were the biggest country weights. The prospectus reports portfolio turnover of 16%.

What it really costs

  • QEFA charges 0.3% a year, versus an average of 0.12% for the similar funds below (7th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $31 in the first year and $381 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
QEFA$31$97$169$381
SEC standard example: $10,000 invested, 5% annual return, shares sold at the end of each period.

In a retirement portfolio

RoleDiversifier

It adds developed-market stocks outside the US, tilted toward value, steadier and higher-quality companies, to a portfolio that may lean heavily on US shares.

QEFA spreads money across companies such as Novartis, Roche and Nestle. The fund launched in June 2014, so it has no record from the 2008 crisis. It fell 31% in the 2020 COVID crash and took about eight months to recover. In the 2022 bear market it dropped 27% and needed 15 months to get back to its peak. That is a long time for someone selling shares to cover spending. Its worst calendar year was 2022, at about −14%. The trailing 12-month yield was 2.74% as of October 27, 2026. Because the fund pays twice a year, income arrives in uneven lumps. Under the SEC example, the 0.30% fee costs about $31 in the first year on $10,000. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want developed stocks outside the US with a tilt toward cheaper, steadier, profitable companies such as Novartis, Roche and Nestle.
  • People who want holdings spread widely: 643 issuers, with the top 10 at about 15% of assets as of June 30, 2026.
  • Those who don't mind twice-yearly payouts; the trailing yield was 2.74% as of October 27, 2026.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: the 0.30% fee compares with 0.07% for IEFA and 0.03% for VEA and SPDW.
  • Anyone who reads "low volatility" as small losses: it fell 31% in 2020 and 27% in 2022.
  • Investors who want emerging markets or Canada, which the index leaves out, or a fund with a 2008 record.

Questions investors ask

What's the difference between QEFA and EFA?

QEFA reshapes the EAFE market by splitting its index equally among value, minimum-volatility and quality stocks. The iShares MSCI EAFE ETF (EFA) is the broader MSCI EAFE fund. They overlap a lot: about 71% by holdings in the latest N-PORT reports. Costs are close, with 0.30% for QEFA and 0.32% for EFA. Over three years, EFA returned 19.4% a year as of October 30, 2026. QEFA returned 19.3% a year as of October 27, 2026.

Does QEFA pay dividends?

Yes, twice a year. QEFA's trailing 12-month yield was 2.74% as of October 27, 2026. With semiannual payments, retirees who rely on the fund for income may need cash from other sources between payouts. The fund owns foreign companies, so the dollar value of its dividends can also rise or fall with exchange rates. The prospectus lists currency risk among its main risks.

Is QEFA a low volatility fund?

Only partly. Minimum volatility makes up one third of its index, and value and quality stocks fill the rest. Its one-year volatility was 12.6% as of October 27, 2026. It still fell 31% in the 2020 COVID crash and 27% in the 2022 bear market. The prospectus also warns that low-volatility stocks may lag the broader market in some periods and may not deliver smaller price swings.

What is QEFA's expense ratio?

QEFA charges 0.30% a year, according to its prospectus filed January 23, 2026. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return would cost about $31 after one year, $169 after five years and $381 after ten. That puts it 7th of 9 on cost among similar funds, whose average is 0.12%. IEFA charges 0.07% and VEA charges 0.03%.

How has QEFA performed over 10 years?

QEFA returned 8.1% a year over the 10 years to December 31, 2025, and 8.44% a year over five years, according to its prospectus. It gained 28.75% in 2025. Its weakest year in that record was 2022, when it fell 13.96%. Its worst quarter was the first quarter of 2020, down 19.59%. For the 10 years through October 27, 2026, it returned 9.3% a year.
