What changed recently

  • Over the three months to May 31, 2026, investors added a net $23.8M (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: -13.67%, +15.57%, +8.41%.

How it works

OAEM doesn't track an index. Its adviser, OneAscent, picks the stocks and uses the MSCI Emerging Markets Index only to define which countries count as emerging markets. In normal conditions, at least 80% of assets go into stocks of companies in those countries, including depositary receipts (certificates that represent foreign shares). The fund aims to hold companies from at least three countries. It usually buys companies worth more than $1 billion. The prospectus sets no fixed country weights.

Every stock must first pass a values-based screen. The adviser avoids companies whose main business involves abortion, adult entertainment, gambling, tobacco, alcohol, cannabis or predatory lending. It also avoids companies with patterns of human rights violations or severe ethics controversies. It looks at ties to forced labor and at environmental mismanagement, too. The screen is proprietary. If a holding later fails it, the adviser intends to sell but isn't required to.

Among the stocks that pass, the team combines number-driven analysis with company-by-company research. It aims for a mix of fast-growing, high-return, income-paying and distressed companies. Portfolio turnover, the share of holdings replaced in a year, was 42%. The fund may hold large amounts of cash or shares of other funds, and those funds' fees would add to costs. As of May 31, 2026, about 5.4% of assets was in cash and the fund held no derivatives.

What it really costs

  • OAEM charges 1.25% a year, versus an average of 0.32% for the similar funds below (6th of 6, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.74% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • The fee includes a 0.03% waiver from the adviser, which may end.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $127 in the first year and $1,480 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

Its high cost, heavy weighting in a few Taiwanese and South Korean technology companies, and larger-than-market swings point to a small slice rather than a core position.

OAEM could add values-screened emerging-market stocks, but its track record is short. It launched on September 15, 2022, so it missed the 2008 crisis, the 2020 COVID crash and most of the 2022 bear market. Its deepest drop was 17%, from October 18, 2024 to April 8, 2025. It recovered by June 5, 2025. Its weakest calendar year was 2024, roughly flat at 0.5%. Swings have been large: one-year volatility (how much returns bounce around) was 28.9% as of October 27, 2026. Anyone who has to sell during a slump could lock in losses. Income is small: the trailing yield was 0.6%, paid once a year. In the SEC's $10,000 example, costs add up to $1,480 over 10 years. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want emerging-market stocks screened against abortion, gambling, alcohol, tobacco and predatory lending, and who accept a 1.25% expense ratio for it.
  • Those comfortable with heavy tech exposure: Taiwan Semiconductor, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix made up about 31% of assets as of May 31, 2026.
  • People holding a small satellite position who can ride out sharp swings; one-year volatility was 28.9% as of October 27, 2026.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: IEMG charges 0.09% and EMXC charges 0.25%, compared with OAEM's 1.25%.
  • Anyone seeking meaningful income, since the trailing yield was 0.6%, paid once a year.
  • Investors who want a long record or broad diversification: the fund launched in September 2022 and held 46 stocks as of May 31, 2026.

Questions investors ask

Is OAEM good for a retirement portfolio?

It may fit only as a small, higher-risk piece. OAEM is an actively managed emerging-market stock fund with a 1.25% expense ratio and a 0.6% trailing yield, paid once a year. As of October 27, 2026, its one-year beta was 1.6, meaning it has moved about 1.6 times as much as the broad market. It launched in September 2022, so it hasn't been through a long bear market. Its deepest drop so far was 17%.

What is the OAEM expense ratio?

It's 1.25% a year, according to the prospectus filed December 23, 2025. That's the highest of six similar emerging-market funds. The other five average 0.32%, and IEMG charges just 0.09%. The SEC's standard example assumes $10,000 invested with a 5% annual return. In that example, OAEM's costs come to about $127 after one year, $673 after five years and $1,480 after ten years.

OAEM vs EMXC: what's the difference?

EMXC, the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ex China ETF, is much cheaper and much larger. It charges 0.25% versus OAEM's 1.25% and had about $24.9 billion in net assets as of August 31, 2026. OAEM is actively managed with a values screen, while EMXC follows an MSCI index that excludes China. Their holdings overlap by about 33%. EMXC returned 27.4% over one year and 25.9% a year over three years (as of October 30, 2026). OAEM returned 32.9% and 23.1% (as of October 27, 2026).

Does OAEM pay dividends?

Yes, but not much, and only once a year. As of October 27, 2026, OAEM paid $0.28 per share over the past 12 months, a trailing yield of about 0.6%. The fund's goal is long-term growth rather than income. Investors who want regular cash payments would get little from it. Like any stock dividend, the payment can change from year to year.

How has OAEM performed compared with the MSCI Emerging Markets Index?

The record is mixed. The prospectus shows that OAEM returned 0.97% in 2024, behind the MSCI Emerging Markets Index's 7.5%. Since its launch through December 31, 2024, it returned 8.31% a year versus 7.47% for the index, which deducts no fees. Price-based returns were stronger later: 26.65% in 2025 and 32.9% over the year to October 27, 2026, first among six similar funds. Over three years, it ranked third, at 23.1% a year.
