What changed recently

  • Over the three months to Jul 31, 2026, investors added a net $129.3M (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +1.80%, -11.55%, +0.48%.

How it works

MGNR does not follow an index. Its sub-advisor, GLG LLC, an indirect wholly owned subsidiary of Man Group plc, picks stocks using two kinds of analysis. Top-down analysis means big-picture views on economies and commodities. Bottom-up analysis means studying individual companies. At least 80% of net assets goes to companies that get most of their assets, revenue or earnings from natural resources. The prospectus defines these broadly: metals, energy (fossil fuel and renewable), timber, water, farm products and chemicals. It also counts businesses that support them, such as food producers, utilities and makers of fertilizer, glass, paper and plastic.

The portfolio is focused, usually 30 to 60 stocks. As of July 31, 2026, it held 40, and the top 10 made up 41.3% of assets. The largest were ArcelorMittal (4.7%), Hudbay Minerals (4.7%), Teck Resources (4.4%), Smurfit Westrock (4.4%) and Range Resources (4.4%). The fund can invest without limit in US, foreign developed and emerging markets. On that date, 42.8% was in US companies and 27.9% in Canadian ones.

There is no set rebalancing schedule. The managers sell when their reason for buying no longer holds, when a company's fundamentals weaken, or when a stock looks fully valued. They may also buy ahead of expected events such as mergers. Portfolio turnover was 80%, and frequent trading can raise costs. The fund held no derivatives as of July 31, 2026, and it does not use leverage.

What it really costs

  • MGNR charges 0.75% a year, versus an average of 0.41% for the similar funds below (7th of 7, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $77 in the first year and $930 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
MGNR$77$240$417$930

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

A focused, actively managed stake in 40 natural resources stocks with volatility near 25% a year fits better as a small side position than as a core holding.

MGNR could add a concentrated stake in companies tied to metals, energy, paper and food, but its track record is short. It launched on February 6, 2024, so it has no history through the 2008, 2020 or 2022 sell-offs. Its deepest drop was 22.1%, from February 10 to April 8, 2025. It recovered by June 11, 2025, about two months later. Its only full calendar year, 2025, returned 50.2%, so there is no losing year yet to study. Volatility near 25% a year means someone forced to sell in a bad stretch could lock in a large loss. Income is small: a 0.83% trailing yield as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. The 0.75% expense ratio is well above the 0.41% average for similar funds. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should weigh the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want a small, actively picked stake in miners, steelmakers, gas producers and agribusiness, with 27.9% in Canada as of July 31, 2026.
  • People willing to pay 0.75% a year for a manager's stock picks, versus a 0.41% average for similar funds.
  • Long-term holders who can ride out swings: volatility was about 25% a year, and the deepest drop was 22.1%.

Look elsewhere if

  • Retirees seeking income: the trailing yield was 0.83% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
  • Cost-focused investors: NANR charges 0.35%, the lowest of the seven similar funds compared.
  • Anyone who wants a long track record: the fund launched February 6, 2024, after the 2008, 2020 and 2022 downturns.

Questions investors ask

What does MGNR invest in?

MGNR holds stocks of companies tied to natural resources, such as metals, energy, farm products, timber, water and chemicals. As of July 31, 2026, it owned 40 stocks, and the 10 largest made up about 41% of assets. The top five were ArcelorMittal (4.7%), Hudbay Minerals (4.7%), Teck Resources (4.4%), Smurfit Westrock (4.4%) and Range Resources (4.4%). About 43% was in US companies and 28% in Canadian ones, with smaller stakes in Luxembourg, Ireland, Mexico and the UK.

Is MGNR actively managed?

Yes. MGNR does not try to match an index. Its sub-advisor, GLG LLC, part of Man Group plc, picks 30 to 60 stocks using economic views and company research, and may buy ahead of events such as mergers. The expense ratio, the yearly fee taken from fund assets, is 0.75% per the prospectus filed May 28, 2026, versus a 0.41% average for six similar funds. Assuming 5% yearly returns, the SEC's standard example puts costs on $10,000 at $77 after one year and $930 after 10 years.

What's the difference between MGNR and NANR?

MGNR is actively managed and costs more. SPDR S&P North American Natural Resources ETF (NANR), the closest match by holdings, is cheaper and, as its name says, focuses on North America. MGNR's expense ratio is 0.75% a year versus 0.35% for NANR. Only about a fifth of their holdings overlap, so the two are not interchangeable. MGNR can invest worldwide, including in emerging markets. Over the year through October 27, 2026, NANR returned 40.6% and MGNR 20.5%.

Does MGNR pay dividends?

Yes, MGNR pays dividends quarterly, but they are small. Over the 12 months through October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.40 per share, a yield of 0.83% (yearly income as a share of the price). The fund's stated goal is long-term capital appreciation, meaning growth in share price, not income. Retirees seeking steady cash flow would get little from it. Payouts depend on what the fund's companies pay, so they can change from quarter to quarter.

Is MGNR good for retirement?

MGNR is built for growth, not income or stability, so it may suit retirement investors who want a small natural resources slice and can handle big swings. It fell 22.1% from February 10 to April 8, 2025, then recovered by June 11, 2025. Its record is short because it launched February 6, 2024. It gained 50.21% in 2025, according to its prospectus, but its 1-year return of 20.5% through October 27, 2026 trailed all six similar natural resources ETFs.
