The short version

Goldman Sachs JUST U.S. Large Cap Equity ETF (JUST) tracks the JUST US Large Cap Diversified Index. The index holds the top-ranked half of Russell 1000 companies in each industry, using JUST Capital's annual rankings of how companies treat workers, customers, communities, the environment and shareholders. Its industry weights stay in line with the broad market, so it behaves much like a large-cap index fund. Its 0.20% expense ratio is higher than the 0.12% average for similar funds.

How it works

Every year JUST Capital Foundation, the index provider, ranks the companies in the Russell 1000 Index, a benchmark of large U.S. stocks. The rankings measure how companies handle issues the American public says it cares about, based on survey research. For the rankings published in 2025, those issues were treatment of workers, customers, communities, the environment and shareholders. The index keeps the top-ranked 50% of companies in each industry.

The index is weighted by market capitalization, the total value of a company's shares, so bigger companies get bigger weights. At each annual reconstitution, weights are adjusted so the index's industry mix matches the Russell 1000's. The index is normally rebalanced every quarter. As of December 1, 2025, it held 449 stocks worth between about $1.5 billion and $4.3 trillion. Because of the weighting, the largest positions are familiar names. As of August 31, 2026, they were NVIDIA (8.4%), Apple (7.4%) and Microsoft (6.1%), and the top 10 holdings made up 40.6% of assets.

The fund is passive: it puts at least 80% of its assets in index stocks and may hold a sample when buying every stock isn't practical. It generally doesn't sell a troubled company unless the index drops it. As of August 31, 2026, it held no derivatives. Portfolio turnover was 14%.

What it really costs

  • JUST charges 0.2% a year, versus an average of 0.12% for the similar funds below (7th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $20 in the first year and $255 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs

In a retirement portfolio

RoleCore holding

It holds about 460 large U.S. stocks with industry weights matched to the Russell 1000, so it can serve as a broad stock-market holding with a values-based screen.

JUST could serve as the main U.S. stock holding in a portfolio, but it falls as hard as the market does. It launched in June 2018, so it has no record from 2008. In the 2020 COVID crash it lost 33.8% between February 19 and March 23, 2020, then took 4.7 months to recover, by August 12, 2020. In 2022 it fell 24.7% from peak to low and needed 14.4 months to recover, by December 13, 2023. Its 2022 calendar-year loss was 17.77%. Someone who has to sell shares or take income during a slump like that may be selling at low prices. Income is small: the yield was 0.93% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. The SEC's standard example puts its cost at $20 in the first year on $10,000. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want about 460 large U.S. stocks chosen using JUST Capital's rankings of how companies treat workers, customers and communities.
  • People who want a values-based screen without big sector bets, since industry weights are reset to match the Russell 1000 every year.
  • Long-term holders who can live through market-sized drops, like the fund's 33.8% fall in early 2020 and 24.7% decline in 2022.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: the 0.20% expense ratio is above the 0.12% average for similar funds, and Goldman's own GSUS charges 0.07%.
  • Retirees who want income from stock funds: the trailing yield was just 0.93% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
  • Investors avoiding big tech or fossil fuels: about 36% of sector-classified holdings were technology, and ExxonMobil was a top-15 holding as of August 31, 2026.

Questions investors ask

What does the JUST ETF invest in?

JUST invests in large U.S. companies from the Russell 1000 that rank in the top half of their industry in JUST Capital's annual rankings. The rankings score how companies treat workers, customers, communities, the environment and shareholders. As of August 31, 2026, the fund held 460 stocks. The largest were NVIDIA (8.4%), Apple (7.4%), Microsoft (6.1%), Amazon (5.0%) and Alphabet, and the top 10 made up 40.6% of assets.

What's the difference between JUST and GSUS?

Both are Goldman Sachs index ETFs that hold large U.S. stocks, and 83% of their holdings overlapped in the latest N-PORT reports. JUST adds JUST Capital's company rankings and charges 0.20% a year, versus 0.07% for GSUS. As of October 27, 2026, JUST returned 15.2% over one year, versus 13.1% for GSUS. Over three years GSUS was slightly ahead, at 25.2% a year versus 24.9%. GSUS is also much larger, with about $3.3 billion in net assets.

Does JUST ETF pay dividends?

Yes, JUST pays dividends every quarter. In the 12 months through October 27, 2026, it paid about $1.03 per share, a trailing yield of 0.93%. That yield is low, so the fund offers modest income. Its main role is long-term growth from the large U.S. companies it holds. Investors who rely on their portfolio for regular cash may want to look at its yield alongside their other income sources.

What is the expense ratio of JUST ETF?

JUST's expense ratio is 0.20% a year, according to its prospectus filed December 29, 2025. The SEC's standard example assumes $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return. In that example, total costs come to about $20 after one year, $64 after three years, $113 after five and $255 after ten. That's above the 0.12% average for similar funds and well above the 0.03% charged by iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV).

How has JUST ETF performed since it launched?

From its June 2018 launch through December 31, 2024, JUST returned 13.47% a year, according to its prospectus. Over the five years to that date it returned 13.97% a year, and in 2024 it gained 23.69%. Its worst calendar year was 2022, a loss of 17.77%. Based on prices through October 27, 2026, it returned 15.2% over one year and 12.3% a year over five years. Past performance doesn't predict future results.
