Matthews Japan Active ETF (JPAN) holds 51 Japanese stocks, led by Tokyo Electron, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and Advantest, picked by a manager rather than copied from an index. Its 0.79% expense ratio (yearly fee) is higher than all five similar funds, which average 0.19%. What changed recently

  • Over the three months to Jun 30, 2026, investors added a net $1.7M (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +12.38%, +6.10%, -1.09%.

How it works

JPAN is actively managed: Matthews International Capital Management picks the stocks rather than tracking an index. Normally at least 80% of net assets go into common and preferred stocks of companies tied to Japan. Matthews judges those ties with tests such as where a company is headquartered or whether at least half its revenue or profits come from Japan, and it may rely on a single test. The MSCI Japan Index is the benchmark, a yardstick rather than a holdings list. Up to 20% may go into bonds.

The manager looks for companies capable of sustainable growth, weighing balance sheets, cash flow, product lines, governance and the depth and integrity of management. Companies of any size qualify, and assets can cluster in a few sectors. The prospectus describes no weighting formula or rebalancing schedule, so position sizes are the manager's call. As of June 30, 2026, the fund held 51 stocks. The top 10 made up 35.8% of assets, led by Tokyo Electron at 6.2%.

Portfolio turnover was 122%, the equivalent of replacing the whole portfolio more than once in a year. That adds trading costs beyond the expense ratio and can create taxable gains. The holdings trade in yen, so a weaker yen lowers their value in dollars. The fund may hedge currency, but its June 30, 2026, report listed no derivatives.

What it really costs

  • JPAN charges 0.79% a year, versus an average of 0.19% for the similar funds below (6th of 6, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $81 in the first year and $978 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

A single-country, actively managed stock fund with a 0.79% fee, about $10 million in assets and just over three years of history fits better as a small add-on than as a portfolio's foundation.

For a portfolio centered on US stocks, JPAN could add Japanese companies and yen exposure. It launched on September 22, 2023, so it missed the 2008, 2020 and 2022 downturns. Of its two full calendar years, the weaker one, 2024, was still an 18.92% gain. Its deepest drop, 15.2% from September 26, 2024, to April 7, 2025, was erased by April 28, 2025. So there is no long slump showing how it might hold up for someone withdrawing money in a bad year.

Its trailing 12-month yield was 4.32% as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year. With 122% turnover, that payout can include trading gains that vary. The 0.79% fee compares with a 0.19% average for similar funds. In the SEC's standard example, costs on $10,000 reach $978 after 10 years. Past results don't predict future ones, and a sound plan looks at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want a manager choosing 51 Japanese stocks, led by Tokyo Electron and Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, rather than owning a broad index.
  • Those willing to pay 0.79% a year for active stock picking, whose three-year return of 25.3% a year through October 27, 2026, led similar funds.
  • People adding a small Japan slice who can accept yen moves and drops like its 15.2% fall from September 2024 to April 2025.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: Franklin FTSE Japan ETF (FLJP) charges 0.09% and JPMorgan BetaBuilders Japan ETF (BBJP) 0.19%, versus JPAN's 0.79%.
  • Investors wary of small funds, which can close: JPAN held about $10 million as of June 30, 2026, versus billions at EWJ and BBJP.
  • Investors wanting regular income or a tested record: it pays once a year and launched in September 2023, after the 2008, 2020 and 2022 downturns.

Questions investors ask

What does JPAN invest in?

JPAN invests mainly in stocks of companies tied to Japan, chosen by Matthews International Capital Management rather than by an index. As of June 30, 2026, it held 51 stocks, with 98.1% of assets in Japanese stocks and 1.6% in cash. The largest positions were Tokyo Electron (6.2%), Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (4.7%), Advantest (3.8%), Recruit Holdings (3.3%) and Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group (3.3%). The top 10 made up 35.8% of the fund.

How has JPAN performed since launch?

JPAN gained in both of its full calendar years: 18.92% in 2024 and 21.79% in 2025, per its prospectus. That works out to an average of 20.61% a year from launch through December 31, 2025. Based on price, it returned 18.4% over the year to October 27, 2026, and 25.3% a year over three years. Its strongest quarter gained 15.24% (to March 31, 2024), and its weakest lost 2.89% (to December 31, 2024). The record covers just over three years, and past results don't predict future ones.

What's the difference between JPAN and EWJ?

The main differences are management style, cost and size. JPAN's managers pick stocks, using the MSCI Japan Index only as a benchmark, while the iShares MSCI Japan ETF (EWJ) is built to track an index. Their holdings overlapped by 46%. EWJ charges 0.50% versus JPAN's 0.79%. EWJ held $22.7 billion as of August 31, 2026, against about $10 million for JPAN as of June 30, 2026. Over three years, JPAN returned 25.3% a year through October 27, 2026. EWJ returned 20.3% a year through October 30, 2026.

Does JPAN pay dividends?

Yes, once a year. JPAN paid $1.83 per share over the 12 months through October 27, 2026. That is a trailing yield of 4.32% (the past year's payouts divided by the share price). With one payout a year, income arrives in a single lump rather than monthly or quarterly. The yield looks backward. Because the fund trades heavily, with 122% portfolio turnover, a payout can include trading gains that vary from year to year.

What is JPAN's expense ratio?

JPAN's expense ratio is 0.79% a year, per its prospectus filed April 30, 2026. The full amount is the management fee, with no waiver. That is the highest in a group of six similar funds. The other five average 0.19%, and Franklin FTSE Japan ETF (FLJP) charges 0.09%. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 earning 5% a year would incur about $81 in costs after one year, $439 after five and $978 after 10. Trading costs from high turnover come on top.
