How it works

JCHI does not track an index. Its sub-adviser, JPMorgan Asset Management (Asia Pacific) Limited, picks stocks one company at a time while weighing economic and policy trends in China. Local analysts rank companies on two measures: expected returns over five years, and longer-term growth and business quality. The managers favor what they see as attractively valued industry leaders with sustainable earnings.

At least 80% of assets go to stocks and similar instruments tied to China, including Hong Kong and Macau. That includes shares listed in Hong Kong and the US. It also includes mainland A-shares, which the fund buys through the Stock Connect trading links with the Shanghai and Shenzhen exchanges. As of July 31, 2026, the fund held 50 companies, with 46% of assets in the top 10 and 11.5% in Tencent alone. It is non-diversified, so it can put more in one company than a diversified fund can. A 67% turnover rate points to frequent trading.

The prospectus expects a significant portion of holdings to use variable interest entity (VIE) structures. In a VIE, foreign investors own an offshore company that controls the Chinese business through contracts rather than owning it outright. Chinese law does not formally recognize these setups. About 35% of assets was in companies registered in the Cayman Islands as of July 31, 2026. The fund may hedge some currency risk with forwards, which are contracts that lock in an exchange rate, but it held no derivatives on that date.

What it really costs

  • JCHI charges 0.65% a year, versus an average of 0.58% for the similar funds below (5th of 7, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $66 in the first year and $810 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It is a concentrated, non-diversified fund tied to one emerging market and fell 29.6% at its worst in about 3.6 years of history, so it lends itself to a small side position rather than the center of a portfolio.

JCHI offers a concentrated stake in Chinese companies such as Tencent, Alibaba and Ping An Insurance. Its record is short. It launched on March 16, 2023, after the 2008, 2020 and 2022 sell-offs. Its deepest drop was 29.6%, from March 30, 2023 to February 2, 2024, and it took eight months from that low to recover. The weaker of its two full calendar years, 2024, was still a 13.74% gain. Even so, it had lost 12% in 2026 as of October 27. Selling shares or drawing cash during a slump like that would lock in losses.

The trailing 12-month yield was 2.06% as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year, so the fund offers little steady income. It costs 0.65% a year. In the SEC's standard example, that comes to $66 in the first year and $810 over 10 years on $10,000. Past results don't predict future returns, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want a manager, not an index, choosing 40 to 70 Chinese stocks, including mainland A-shares such as Kweichow Moutai and Contemporary Amperex Technology.
  • Long-term investors wanting a small side position in China who can accept VIE and regulatory risks and drops like the fund's 29.6% fall.
  • Investors who want Chinese banks, insurers and brokers such as China Merchants Bank, Ping An and CITIC Securities alongside Tencent and Alibaba.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: the 0.65% fee is above the 0.59% charged by the far larger iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI) and about double CXSE's 0.32%.
  • Investors wary of tiny funds: JCHI had $15.3 million in assets on July 31, 2026, and small funds can have wider buy-sell price gaps or close.
  • Investors seeking regular income: the yield was 2.06% as of October 27, 2026, and the fund pays out just once a year.

Questions investors ask

What does JCHI invest in?

JCHI invests in 40 to 70 Chinese stocks picked by its sub-adviser, JPMorgan Asset Management (Asia Pacific) Limited, rather than tracking an index. As of July 31, 2026, it held 50 companies. The largest were Tencent (11.5%), Alibaba (7.6%), Ping An Insurance (4.3%), China Merchants Bank (4.2%) and Contemporary Amperex Technology (4.1%). The top 10 made up 46% of assets. The holdings report listed 63% of assets as Chinese companies and 35% as companies registered in the Cayman Islands.

What is JCHI's expense ratio?

JCHI's expense ratio, the yearly fee taken from fund assets, is 0.65%, according to the prospectus filed February 25, 2026. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 earning 5% a year would pay about $66 in costs over one year, $362 over five years and $810 over 10 years. That is above the 0.58% average of six similar China ETFs and ranks fifth-lowest of the seven funds. The WisdomTree China ex-State-Owned Enterprises Fund (CXSE) charges 0.32%.

Does JCHI pay a dividend?

Yes, but only once a year. JCHI paid $0.99 per share over the 12 months to October 27, 2026. That is a trailing yield of 2.06%, meaning the past year's payouts divided by the share price. The fund's stated goal is long-term growth, not income, so payouts can rise or fall with the dividends its Chinese holdings pay and with currency moves. Paying once a year also means income arrives in one lump rather than monthly or quarterly.

What's the difference between JCHI and MCHI?

The main difference is approach: JCHI's managers pick 40 to 70 Chinese stocks, while the iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI) tracks an MSCI China index. About 41% of their holdings overlap. MCHI costs less, 0.59% versus 0.65%, and is far larger. It had $6.3 billion in assets as of August 31, 2026, against JCHI's $15.3 million as of July 31, 2026. Over the three years to October 27, 2026, both returned about 8% a year. Over one year, JCHI lost 17.3% and MCHI lost 23.7%.

How has JCHI performed since launch?

Unevenly, with strong years and sharp drops. According to its prospectus, JCHI returned 13.74% in 2024 and 28.21% in 2025. That works out to an average of 7.14% a year from its March 16, 2023 launch through December 31, 2025. It then lost 12% in 2026 through October 27, and 17.3% over the 12 months to that date. Its deepest drop was 29.6%, from March 2023 to February 2024, and it took eight months from that low to recover. Past returns don't predict future results.
