How it works
GTEK is an actively managed ETF. Goldman Sachs Asset Management picks stocks rather than tracking an index, but measures results against the MSCI ACWI Select Information Technology + Communication Services (excluding >$100B Market Cap) Index. At least 80% of assets go into U.S. and foreign technology companies, defined as information technology, communication services, internet retail and healthcare technology businesses. The focus is companies whose freely traded shares are worth less than $100 billion, which steers it away from the biggest tech giants.
Selection rests on company research. The team studies profits, free cash flow, net cash and return on invested capital (profit earned on the money put into a business), and weighs valuation. It may also consider environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors. Position sizes and trade timing are the managers' call, with no index rebalancing schedule. The December 29, 2025 prospectus reports 59% portfolio turnover, meaning it replaced holdings worth more than half the portfolio's average value in a year.
The fund is non-diversified, so it can hold bigger stakes in fewer companies, and it keeps more than 25% of assets in information technology industries. As of August 31, 2026, it had 60 holdings and no derivatives. Marvell Technology (3.6%), Taiwan's Jentech Precision Industrial (3.5%) and Cloudflare (3.3%) were the largest. U.S. stocks were 46% of assets and Taiwanese stocks 21%.
What it really costs
- GTEK charges 0.75% a year, versus an average of 0.52% for the similar funds below (6th of 7, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $77 in the first year and $930 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| GTEK | $77 | $240 | $417 | $930 |
In a retirement portfolio
GTEK is a concentrated, non-diversified tech fund that pays no income and has lost more than half its value at one point, so it fits best as a small add-on to a broader portfolio.
GTEK could add exposure to technology companies below the $100 billion mark, many of them outside the U.S. The cost of that exposure is sharp swings. The fund launched in September 2021, so it has no record from the 2008 or 2020 crashes. In the 2022 bear market it fell 48.7%. Its deepest drop was 53.8%, from November 2021 to October 2022, and it took 39 months to get back to its old high, on January 12, 2026. Its one-year beta was 2.07 as of October 27, 2026, so it moved about twice as much as the market. Anyone who had to sell shares during 2022 would have locked in steep losses.
GTEK made no distributions in the year to October 27, 2026, so it provides no income. Its 0.75% fee works out to $77 after one year and $930 after 10 years in the SEC's standard $10,000 example. Past results don't predict future returns, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want tech companies beyond the mega-caps, since GTEK targets firms under $100 billion, such as Marvell, Cloudflare and MediaTek.
- Investors comfortable with heavy foreign exposure: about 54% of assets were outside the U.S. as of August 31, 2026, including 20.9% in Taiwan.
- Long-term investors who can hold through deep drops. The fund once fell 53.8% and needed 39 months to recover.
Look elsewhere if
- Anyone who needs income. GTEK made no distributions in the year to October 27, 2026.
- Cost-conscious investors. Its 0.75% expense ratio is above the 0.52% average for similar funds and ranks 6th of 7 on cost.
- People who may need to sell in a downturn. GTEK lost 46.7% in 2022, and its one-year beta was 2.07.

Questions investors ask
Does GTEK pay a dividend?
No. GTEK made no distributions in the year to October 27, 2026, so its trailing yield was 0%. The fund's goal is long-term growth of capital, and it holds technology companies picked for growth, not for payouts. Any return has come from changes in the share price. Investors who want regular income from their portfolio would need to get it from other holdings.
What's the difference between GTEK and THNQ?
Both own technology stocks, but they overlap only modestly. ROBO Global Artificial Intelligence ETF (THNQ) is GTEK's closest match by holdings, at about 20% overlap. THNQ focuses on artificial intelligence and charges 0.68% a year, compared with GTEK's 0.75%. As of October 27, 2026, THNQ returned 34.4% over one year and 42.4% a year over three years. GTEK returned 31.2% and 35.3%. GTEK is actively managed and targets companies under $100 billion.
What are GTEK's top holdings?
As of August 31, 2026, GTEK's largest holdings were Marvell Technology (3.6%), Jentech Precision Industrial (3.5%), Cloudflare (3.3%), MediaTek (3.0%) and Elite Material (3.0%). The fund held 60 stocks, and its top 10 made up 29.5% of assets. Several of the biggest positions are Taiwanese companies, and Taiwan made up 20.9% of the fund. U.S. companies made up 46.2%.
How much did GTEK lose in 2022?
GTEK lost 46.69% in 2022, according to its prospectus. Its worst quarter was the one ending June 30, 2022, when it fell 27.01%. It then gained 33.79% in 2023 and 16.22% in 2024. Based on share prices, it gained 23.68% in 2025. Even after that rebound, its average annual return since launch was -6.16% as of December 31, 2024.
Is GTEK an index fund?
No. GTEK is an actively managed ETF, so Goldman Sachs Asset Management's managers pick the stocks instead of copying an index. They compare results with the MSCI ACWI Select Information Technology + Communication Services (excluding >$100B Market Cap) Index, but the fund doesn't try to match it. GTEK is also non-diversified, which lets it hold fewer companies. Its turnover was 59%, and it charges 0.75% a year.
