How it works

THNQ tracks the ROBO Global Artificial Intelligence Index. ROBO Global Index LLC, part of VettaFi, owns the index, and Exchange Traded Concepts runs the fund. The index provider keeps a database of AI companies in two groups. Infrastructure covers big data, cloud providers, cognitive computing, network security and semiconductors. Applications & Services covers areas such as healthcare, factory automation, e-commerce and consulting. Each company gets a "THNQ Score" from 1 to 100. The score is based on its AI revenue, its AI spending and its technology and market leadership. A company needs a score of at least 50, a market value above $200 million and enough daily trading to join. The provider also screens out companies that fail its environmental, social and governance (ESG) criteria.

The index holds 50 to 100 stocks. Each stock's weight equals its score as a share of the total score, so a giant like Amazon (2.4%) carried less weight than the chipmaker Ambarella (2.9%) as of July 31, 2026. The top ten made up just 24% of assets. The index rebalances and adds stocks every quarter, and it can drop them at any time.

The fund generally holds every stock in the index, including some held through depositary receipts (US-traded certificates for foreign shares). The provider expects at least 25% of the stocks to come from non-US companies, which can include China A-shares (shares that trade on mainland Chinese exchanges). The fund held no derivatives and uses no leverage.

What it really costs

  • THNQ charges 0.68% a year, versus an average of 0.6% for the similar funds below (6th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.75% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • The fee includes a 0.07% waiver from the adviser, which may end.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $69 in the first year and $924 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

THNQ is a concentrated AI theme fund that has moved about twice as much as the market, so it fits better as a small add-on than as a foundation.

THNQ could add focused exposure to AI stocks, but it has swung far more than the broad market. Its one-year beta, a measure of how much it moves with the market, was 2.11 as of October 27, 2026. The fund launched in May 2020, after the COVID crash, so it has no record for 2008 or 2020. It fell 44.2% in the 2022 bear market, and 2022 was its worst calendar year, down 39.56%. Its deepest drop was 50.6%, from November 2021 to October 2022, and it didn't recover until November 2024.

Anyone forced to sell in 2022 would have locked in steep losses. Income is minimal: the yield was 0.14% as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested costs $69 over one year. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want AI exposure spread over about 53 stocks, where no holding was above 3% of assets as of July 31, 2026.
  • Long-term holders who could sit through drops like the 50.6% fall from November 2021 to October 2022, which took until November 2024 to recover.
  • People adding a small growth slice beside a core fund, who are comfortable holding some foreign and emerging-market stocks, possibly including China A-shares.

Look elsewhere if

  • Investors who need income: the yield was 0.14% as of October 27, 2026, and the fund pays only once a year.
  • Cost-conscious investors: THNQ's 0.68% expense ratio is above WTAI's 0.45%, XAIX's 0.35% and the 0.60% average of similar funds.
  • Retirees who may need to sell in a downturn: THNQ lost 44.2% in the 2022 bear market and had a one-year beta of 2.11.

Questions investors ask

Is THNQ good for retirement?

THNQ is a high-risk growth fund, so it may suit a retirement portfolio only as a small slice. It lost 44.2% in the 2022 bear market, and its deepest drop, 50.6%, didn't recover until November 2024. Its yield was just 0.14% as of October 27, 2026, so it adds little income. It may suit someone who wants AI exposure and won't need to sell shares in a bad year.

What's the difference between THNQ and WTAI?

Both are AI funds, and about 35% of their holdings overlap. WTAI is cheaper, with a 0.45% expense ratio against THNQ's 0.68%, and it's larger, with $669 million in net assets against THNQ's $416 million. THNQ weights stocks by an AI-focus score. Based on price, as of October 27, 2026, THNQ returned 34.4% over one year against WTAI's 24.9%. Over three years it averaged 42.4% a year against WTAI's 35.1%.

Does THNQ pay dividends?

Yes, but very little, and only once a year. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, THNQ paid $0.13 per share, a yield of 0.14%. That's expected, because many of its holdings are growth companies, like Datadog, Cloudflare and Snowflake, that pay small dividends or none. Investors looking for regular income would get almost nothing from this fund.

What is THNQ's expense ratio?

THNQ's expense ratio is 0.68%, according to the prospectus filed August 27, 2026. That's a 0.75% management fee minus a 0.07% fee waiver. In the SEC's standard example, with $10,000 invested and a 5% yearly return, costs come to about $69 after one year, $410 after five years and $924 after ten. That puts THNQ 6th of 9 on cost among similar funds, which average 0.60%.

How has THNQ performed since launch?

THNQ has done well, but the ride has been rough. According to its prospectus, it averaged 17.98% a year from its May 2020 launch through December 31, 2025, and 9.75% a year over the five years to that date. It lost 39.56% in 2022, then gained 55.9% in 2023 and 30.35% in 2025. Based on price, it was up 45% year to date as of October 27, 2026.
