The short version

iShares 25+ Year Treasury STRIPS Bond ETF (GOVZ) holds zero-coupon US Treasury bonds. These are principal STRIPS that mature in 25 years or more, and the fund tracks the ICE BofA Long US Treasury Principal STRIPS Index. Because the bonds pay nothing until they mature, their prices react to interest rates more than regular Treasuries of similar maturity. The fund lost 41.34% in 2022. It costs 0.10% a year after a fee waiver, while SPTL and VGLT charge 0.03%.

How it works

GOVZ, from BlackRock, tracks the ICE BofA Long US Treasury Principal STRIPS Index, run by ICE Data Indices. STRIPS are created by splitting a U.S. Treasury bond's interest payments from its final principal payment. The index holds only the principal pieces, which act as zero-coupon bonds: they pay no interest, sell below face value and pay full face value at maturity. Each must have at least 25 years left to maturity and come from a Treasury bond with at least $1 billion outstanding.

Each issue is weighted by its market price times an assumed $1 billion face value, so longer-dated STRIPS, which trade at deeper discounts, tend to weigh less. The index is rebalanced quarterly. As of August 31, 2026, the fund held 20 issues averaging 27.2 years to maturity; the largest was about 7.6% of assets and the top 10 about 55%.

BlackRock uses representative sampling: it may skip some index bonds while aiming to match the index's duration (sensitivity to rate changes), maturity and yield. At least 90% of assets must be in Treasuries and 80% in index securities; up to 10% may go into futures, options and swaps. Because the bonds pay nothing until maturity, their prices swing more with interest rates than those of ordinary Treasuries of similar maturity.

What it really costs

  • GOVZ charges 0.1% a year, versus an average of 0.08% for the similar funds below (5th of 8, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.15% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • The fee includes a 0.05% waiver from the adviser, which may end.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $10 in the first year and $178 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
GOVZ$10$34$70$178
SEC standard example: $10,000 invested, 5% annual return, shares sold at the end of each period.

Structure and tax notes

  • Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It holds only US Treasury debt, but its zero-coupon, 27-year average maturity makes its price swings and drawdowns much deeper than those of a typical bond fund.

GOVZ carries very little credit risk but extreme interest-rate risk. It launched in September 2020, so it has no record from the 2008 crisis or the 2020 crash. In the 2022 bear market it fell 39% between January and October, and it lost 41.34% for calendar 2022. Its deepest drop was 60.4%, from December 3, 2021 to October 7, 2026, and it had not recovered as of October 27, 2026. Anyone who had to sell shares in a bad year would have locked in large losses.

Its bonds pay no coupons. Tax rules generally require funds to pay out the interest that builds up on zero-coupon bonds, so GOVZ still pays monthly. Its trailing 12-month yield was 5.53% as of October 27, 2026. Expenses are 0.10% after a waiver. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want a concentrated position on falling long-term rates and accept bigger price swings than regular Treasuries of similar maturity.
  • Those who want only US government credit: 100% Treasury principal STRIPS with a 27.2-year average maturity, as of August 31, 2026.
  • Investors pairing a small long-duration bond position with stocks; its one-year beta to the market was 0.32 as of October 27, 2026.

Look elsewhere if

  • Anyone who may need to sell within a few years: its 60.4% drawdown had not recovered as of October 27, 2026.
  • Cost-focused investors: its 0.10% expense ratio, which already includes a 0.05% waiver, is higher than the 0.03% SPTL and VGLT charge.
  • Those who prefer larger funds: GOVZ had about $327 million in net assets as of August 31, 2026, compared with about $47 billion for TLT.

Questions investors ask

What's the difference between GOVZ and TLT?

Both are iShares funds that hold long-term US Treasuries, but GOVZ holds only zero-coupon principal STRIPS. Those react more to rate changes than coupon-paying Treasuries of similar maturity. GOVZ's average maturity was 27.2 years and TLT's was 26 years, as of August 31, 2026. GOVZ costs 0.10% and TLT costs 0.15%. TLT is far larger, at about $47 billion versus $327 million. Over one year, GOVZ returned -12.6% through October 27, 2026, while TLT returned -5.4% through October 30, 2026.

Does GOVZ pay monthly dividends?

Yes, GOVZ pays distributions monthly. Its trailing 12-month yield was 5.53% as of October 27, 2026, or about $1.87 per share. Its bonds don't make interest payments, though. Interest builds up as each zero-coupon bond moves toward maturity, and tax rules generally require funds to pay that out. So the payments reflect accrued interest, not cash coupons. The fund's share price can still fall much more than its income in a bad year.

How risky is GOVZ?

For a Treasury fund, GOVZ is very volatile. It lost 41.34% in 2022 and 15.74% in 2024, according to its prospectus. Its deepest drop was 60.4%, from December 2021 to October 2026, and it had not recovered as of October 27, 2026. Within 2023 alone, it had a -20.13% quarter and an 18.81% quarter. Its three-year volatility was 21%. Default risk is low because it holds only US Treasury debt, but interest-rate risk is high.

What does GOVZ actually hold?

GOVZ holds US Treasury principal STRIPS. Each is the final principal payment of a Treasury bond, sold separately from the interest payments. As of August 31, 2026, it held 20 issues, all in US Treasuries, with no cash or derivatives. The largest position was 7.6% of assets and the top ten made up 54.55%. The average maturity was 27.2 years and the average coupon was zero. The index requires at least 25 years left to maturity.

Is GOVZ good for retirement?

GOVZ may suit only a small, higher-risk slice of a retirement portfolio. Its prospectus shows average annual returns of -14.19% over five years and -1.9% over one year, through December 31, 2025. It has never had a calendar year better than 0.98%. The SEC's standard example puts costs at $10 for one year and $178 over 10 years on a $10,000 investment. Retirees who may need to sell in a downturn face deep price drops.
