How it works

FKU tracks the Nasdaq AlphaDEX United Kingdom Index, which Nasdaq, Inc. owns and maintains. The fund normally keeps at least 90% of its net assets in the index's stocks. The index starts from the Nasdaq United Kingdom Index. Nasdaq assigns companies to the UK mainly by where they are incorporated, based and listed. It then drops duplicate share classes, stocks that are hard to trade and companies at or below the mid-cap breakpoint. That breakpoint was $4.450 billion as of March 31, 2026, though Nasdaq can add smaller companies to reach a minimum number of stocks.

Nasdaq ranks the remaining stocks on growth factors and on value factors, and each stock keeps whichever rank is higher. The top 75 make the cut. They are split into five groups (quintiles), and higher-scoring groups get bigger weights. A market-value-weighted fund works differently, because its largest companies dominate. Each industry can't exceed its weight in the starting index by more than 15 percentage points. Stocks that break the cap move to a lower-weighted group or drop out.

The index is rebalanced and reshuffled twice a year, and the fund trades shortly afterward. As a result, portfolio turnover (the share of holdings replaced in a year) was 65%, according to the prospectus filed April 30, 2026. The fund owns shares directly, and its June 30, 2026 holdings report shows no derivatives. Its stocks trade in foreign currencies, so if the British pound falls against the dollar, returns for US holders go down.

What it really costs

  • FKU charges 0.8% a year, versus an average of 0.28% for the similar funds below (7th of 7, cheapest first).

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

A single-country fund with a 0.80% expense ratio that fell more than 50% in 2020 fits better as a small add-on than as a foundation.

FKU offers concentrated exposure to British companies, with large positions in financial stocks, and that mix can behave differently from a US stock fund. The ride has been rough. The fund fell 52.5% from February 19 to March 18, 2020, and took about 10 months to recover. In the 2022 bear market it dropped 41.1% and needed about 21 months, until July 11, 2024, to get back to its old peak. Its worst calendar year was 2022, when it lost 23.52%. Anyone who had to sell shares during those stretches would have locked in deep losses. The fund launched in 2012, so it has no record from the 2008 crisis.

The fund pays income quarterly, and its trailing 12-month yield was 3.8% as of October 27, 2026. Its 0.80% expense ratio is well above the 0.28% average of similar funds. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors wanting a small UK position spread across about 75 stocks, chosen by growth and value scores rather than company size.
  • Holders who can sit through sharp swings, including a 54.4% drop from December 2019 to March 2020 that took 11 months to recover.
  • People wanting quarterly income from foreign stocks; the trailing 12-month yield was 3.8% as of October 27, 2026.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-conscious investors: the 0.80% expense ratio tops its group of similar funds, while EWU charges 0.50% and VGK 0.06%.
  • Anyone wanting broad European exposure; about 91% of FKU was in UK companies as of June 30, 2026.
  • Investors wary of a $36.7 million fund (as of June 30, 2026) whose twice-yearly index reshuffles produced 65% turnover.

Questions investors ask

What does FKU invest in?

FKU holds about 75 UK stocks chosen by the Nasdaq AlphaDEX United Kingdom Index, which scores companies on growth and value factors. As of June 30, 2026, the largest holdings were Beazley at 3.3%, Balfour Beatty at 2.6%, Lion Finance Group at 2.6%, Standard Chartered at 2.4% and IG Group at 2.3%. The top 10 made up only about 24% of assets, so no single company dominates. Financial companies were a large share of the fund.

What's the difference between FKU and EWU?

The biggest differences are method and cost. The iShares MSCI United Kingdom ETF (EWU) charges 0.50% a year, compared with 0.80% for FKU, and had $3.79 billion in net assets as of August 31, 2026. FKU had $36.7 million as of June 30, 2026. FKU picks and weights stocks with AlphaDEX scoring, and the two funds share about 36% of their holdings. As of October 27, 2026, FKU returned 16.6% over one year versus 13.6% for EWU, and 26.4% versus 20.6% a year over three years.

Does FKU pay dividends?

Yes. FKU pays distributions quarterly. Over the 12 months through October 27, 2026, it paid $2.08 per share, a trailing yield of 3.8%. The payments come from dividends paid by the British companies the fund owns, so amounts can change from quarter to quarter. Because the payments start out in foreign currencies, swings in the British pound against the dollar also affect what US holders receive.

How much did FKU drop in 2020 and 2022?

FKU fell hard in both years. From February 19 to March 18, 2020, it lost 52.5%, and its worst quarter was the first quarter of 2020, at −40.79%. It recovered by January 6, 2021. In the 2022 bear market it fell 41.1% from January 4 to September 28 and didn't regain its peak until July 11, 2024. For the full 2022 calendar year, it lost 23.52%.

What is FKU's long-term return?

As of December 31, 2025, the prospectus filed April 30, 2026 shows FKU returned 37.6% over one year. Its average yearly returns were 10.3% over five years, 6.1% over 10 years and 7.4% since its 2012 launch. Results have been uneven, with losses of 16.08% in 2016, 16.16% in 2018 and 23.52% in 2022, alongside gains of 32.36% in 2019 and 37.6% in 2025.
