How it works

DFSU does not track an index. Dimensional Fund Advisors starts with the whole market of US operating companies, weighted by market capitalization, which means bigger companies count for more. It then leans moderately toward smaller companies, value stocks and highly profitable firms by trimming large, expensive or less profitable ones. A value stock trades at a low price compared with its book value, the worth of its assets minus its debts on the company's books. At least 80% of net assets go into US stocks.

Sustainability screens then reshape the portfolio. Dimensional ranks companies on the potential emissions from their fossil fuel reserves and on their carbon intensity, which is emissions compared with the size of the business. It also compares companies with their sector peers on carbon intensity and on controversies over land use and biodiversity, toxic spills, operational waste and water management. The worst-ranked companies are usually given less weight or left out, and higher-ranked ones may get more weight.

There is no fixed index rebalancing date. The managers can adjust positions for short-term signals such as price momentum, and they trade flexibly to keep costs down. Portfolio turnover was 5%, according to the prospectus. The fund may use futures to handle cash coming in or going out, and it may lend securities to earn extra income.

What it really costs

  • DFSU charges 0.15% a year, versus an average of 0.1% for the similar funds below (7th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.14% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $15 in the first year and $192 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

RoleCore holding

With 1,942 US stocks of all sizes as of July 31, 2026, DFSU covers the broad US market in one fund, with added value, size and carbon tilts.

DFSU could serve as the main US stock holding in a long-term portfolio, but its record is short. It launched on November 1, 2022, so it missed the 2008, 2020 and 2022 downturns. Its weakest calendar year, 2025, still gained 15.7%. Its deepest drop was 19.9%, from December 4, 2024, to April 8, 2025, and it was back at its old peak by July 1, 2025. A retiree who sold near that April low would have turned a paper loss into a real one. The yield was 0.83% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly, so the fund is not built for income. Under the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost $15 in fees the first year and $192 over 10 years. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want one broad US stock fund, with 1,942 holdings, that gives less weight to high-carbon and fossil-reserve companies or leaves them out.
  • People comfortable with Dimensional's moderate tilt toward smaller, value and highly profitable companies, at a 0.15% expense ratio.
  • Long-term holders who prefer low trading inside the fund; the prospectus put portfolio turnover at 5%.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: IVV charges 0.03% and Dimensional's own DFUS charges 0.09%, compared with DFSU's 0.15%.
  • Income seekers: the yield was 0.83% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
  • Anyone who wants a long track record: launched in November 2022, the fund has not been tested by crashes like 2008 or 2020.

Questions investors ask

Is DFSU an index fund?

No. DFSU is actively managed by Dimensional Fund Advisors and follows no index. The managers start with the US stock market weighted by company size. They then lean toward smaller, value and highly profitable companies, and they underweight or exclude companies that rank poorly on carbon emissions and environmental controversies. The prospectus compares its results with the Russell 3000 Index, but the fund is not built to match that index.

What is DFSU's expense ratio?

DFSU's expense ratio is 0.15%, according to its prospectus filed February 27, 2026. That includes a 0.14% management fee. Similar funds average 0.10%, and DFSU ranks 7th of 9 on cost in its comparison group. Under the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return would cost about $15 in fees after one year, $85 after five years and $192 after ten years.

What's the difference between DFSU and DFAU?

Both are Dimensional US stock ETFs with about 70% of their holdings in common. The main difference is DFSU's sustainability screens, which cut weight in high-carbon companies. DFAU costs 0.12%, compared with 0.15% for DFSU, and is much larger, with $12.4 billion in net assets against DFSU's $2.27 billion as of July 31, 2026. As of October 27, 2026, DFAU returned 14.1% over one year and 24.2% a year over three years. DFSU returned 11.5% and 23.3%.

Does DFSU pay dividends?

Yes. DFSU pays dividends quarterly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.40 per share, a yield of 0.83%. That is a small amount of income, because the fund owns mostly large growth-heavy companies such as NVIDIA, Apple and Microsoft. It aims for long-term growth, not income. Investors who need regular cash flow may want to compare it with dividend-focused or bond funds.

How has DFSU performed compared with the Russell 3000?

DFSU has trailed the Russell 3000 slightly. As of December 31, 2025, it returned 15.68% over one year, against 17.15% for the index. Since its November 2022 launch, it returned 20.31% a year, against 20.73% for the index. Its calendar-year returns were 26.29% in 2023, 22.97% in 2024 and 15.68% in 2025. Based on price, it gained 11.5% in the year to October 27, 2026.
