The short version
Brandes U.S. Small-Mid Cap Value ETF (BSMC) is an actively managed fund. Its manager, Brandes Investment Partners, picks about 70 small and mid-size U.S. companies that it judges to be trading below their true worth, such as Ingles Markets and International Flavors & Fragrances. Unlike most similar funds, it relies on a manager's stock picks rather than an index. It also costs more: its 0.71% expense ratio is well above the 0.20% average for similar funds.

How it works
BSMC does not track an index. Its advisor, Brandes Investment Partners, uses value investing. It estimates each company's "intrinsic" value, meaning what the business is worth based on its earnings, cash flow and assets. Then it buys stocks selling below that estimate. It may sell when a stock's price reaches the estimate, or when it sees better opportunities elsewhere. The prospectus lists portfolio turnover at 5%, so the manager replaces only a small part of the portfolio each year.
Under normal conditions, at least 80% of net assets goes into U.S. value companies of a size that fits within the Russell 2500 Index. As of July 1, 2026, that range ran from about $12.4 million to $29.4 billion in market value. A company counts as "value" if it belongs to the MSCI ACWI Value Investable Market Index or the Russell 3000 Value Index, or if Brandes judges it undervalued. The fund can also own companies outside the U.S., including in emerging and frontier markets.
No formula sets the weights. No single company can be more than 5% of assets when it is bought, and one sector, such as health care, can be more than 20%. As of June 30, 2026, the fund held 69 stocks. The top 10 made up 24.6% of assets, cash was 3.9%, and it held no derivatives. Cash can sometimes become a large part of the portfolio.
What it really costs
- BSMC charges 0.71% a year, versus an average of 0.2% for the similar funds below (7th of 7, cheapest first).
- Of that, 0.7% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $73 in the first year and $883 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BSMC | $73 | $227 | $395 | $883 |
In a retirement portfolio
It holds smaller, out-of-favor U.S. companies chosen by a value manager, and over the past year it moved less than the broad market.
BSMC can add smaller, out-of-favor U.S. companies that large-company index funds mostly leave out. Over the year to October 27, 2026, its beta was 0.63. Beta measures how much a fund moves when the market moves. The fund launched in October 2023, so it has no record from the 2008, 2020 or 2022 sell-offs. Its deepest drop was 19.2%, from November 25, 2024 to April 8, 2025. It recovered by July 1, 2025, about 2.8 months later. Its weakest full year, 2024, still gained 10.2%. Anyone who sold near the April 2025 low would have locked in the loss. Income is small: the trailing yield was 0.96% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. In the SEC's standard example, fees on $10,000 add up to $883 over 10 years. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want a value manager picking about 70 small and mid-size companies instead of an index that holds hundreds or thousands.
- Long-term holders who want a small-mid value slice with low turnover (5%) and a one-year beta of 0.63 as of October 27, 2026.
- Investors comfortable with less familiar names like Ingles Markets, Elanco and Innovex, plus some non-U.S. companies such as Amdocs.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors: the 0.71% expense ratio is about ten times the 0.07% of Vanguard Small Cap Value ETF (VBR). It ranks 7th of 7 similar funds.
- Anyone who needs real income from a fund. The trailing yield was 0.96% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
- Investors who want a long track record or a large fund. It launched in October 2023 and held $166 million as of June 30, 2026.

Questions investors ask
What are BSMC's top holdings?
As of June 30, 2026, BSMC's largest positions were Ingles Markets (2.8%), International Flavors & Fragrances (2.7%), Elanco Animal Health (2.7%), Innovex International (2.6%) and Edgewell Personal Care (2.6%). The fund is spread out: it held 69 stocks, and the top 10 made up 24.6% of assets. About 84% was in U.S. companies. Smaller stakes went to firms based in Guernsey (Amdocs), the Netherlands and the U.K. Cash was 3.9%.
What's the difference between BSMC and DFSV?
BSMC is run by Brandes, which picks stocks by hand, and it owns both small and mid-size companies. Dimensional US Small Cap Value ETF (DFSV) shares only about 8% of BSMC's holdings, but that is still the highest overlap of any similar fund. DFSV costs 0.30% a year, compared with BSMC's 0.71%. It is also much larger: $8.2 billion as of July 31, 2026. As of October 27, 2026, DFSV returned 23.6% over one year and 20% a year over three years. BSMC returned 17.9% and 19.2%.
Does BSMC pay dividends?
Yes. BSMC pays dividends quarterly. In the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.38 per share, a trailing yield of 0.96%. The amount is small because the fund aims for long-term growth in value, not income. For someone drawing regular cash from a portfolio, BSMC's payouts alone would cover very little of a typical withdrawal.
What is BSMC's expense ratio?
BSMC's expense ratio is 0.71% a year, according to its prospectus filed October 28, 2026. Almost all of that is a 0.70% management fee. It is well above the 0.20% average for similar funds and the highest of the seven compared. Vanguard Small Cap Value ETF (VBR), for example, charges 0.07%. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 growing 5% a year would pay $73 in costs over one year and $883 over 10 years.
How has BSMC performed since it launched?
BSMC gained 10.21% in 2024 and 15.65% in 2025. According to its prospectus, it returned 16.92% a year from its October 2023 launch through December 31, 2025. Based on share price, it returned 17.9% over the year to October 27, 2026, which ranked 6th of 7 similar funds. Over three years it returned 19.2% a year, which ranked 4th of 7. Its strongest quarter gained 9.53% (Q3 2024), and its weakest lost 3.55% (Q2 2024).
