How it works
BKHY is not an index fund, but it stays close to one. It normally invests almost all its assets in bonds that belong to the Bloomberg US Corporate High Yield Total Return Index when it buys them. It can also hold ETFs and derivatives that track those bonds. That index covers fixed-rate, taxable US dollar corporate bonds rated Ba1/BB+ or lower. Each bond needs at least $150 million outstanding and at least one year left before it matures. The index updates its membership monthly.
The sub-adviser, Insight North America LLC, is a BNY Mellon affiliate. It uses its own credit model to keep the fund's rating mix, duration (how sensitive prices are to interest rates) and sector weights close to the index. It holds more of the bonds the model rates as undervalued and less of those it rates as overvalued. It also looks for "fallen angels": bonds that were cut from investment grade to junk. Portfolio turnover was 76.63%.
The fund may use futures, swaps, structured notes and credit default swap indexes for hedging and to manage cash flows. As of July 31, 2026, it held 1,602 bonds with an average maturity of 5.7 years. Its 10 largest positions made up only 3.62% of assets. Many holdings are 144A bonds, which are sold privately and can be harder to trade.
What it really costs
- BKHY charges 0.22% a year, versus an average of 0.45% for the similar funds below (3rd of 8, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $23 in the first year and $280 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BKHY | $23 | $71 | $124 | $280 |
Structure and tax notes
- Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.
In a retirement portfolio
BKHY pays monthly and had a 7.57% trailing yield as of October 27, 2026, but its junk-bond credit risk makes it an income holding, not a safe one.
BKHY launched in April 2020, after the COVID crash had bottomed, so it has no record from 2008 or that crash. In the 2022 bear market it fell about 15.6% and did not recover until December 2023. Its deepest drop was 15.9%, from December 2021 to September 2022, and it took about 15 months to get back. The prospectus shows a 2022 loss of 11.2%. Anyone who had to sell shares in 2022 would have sold at a loss.
The fund paid $3.48 per share over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, in monthly payments. It costs $23 in the first year on a $10,000 investment, using the SEC's standard example. Past results don't predict the future, and any plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Income seekers who want monthly payments from junk bonds; the trailing 12-month yield was 7.57% as of October 27, 2026.
- Investors who want wide spread: about 1,600 bonds, with the top 10 holdings making up only 3.62% as of July 31, 2026.
- Investors comparing JNK (0.40%) or HYG (0.49%) who want a similar junk-bond portfolio for a 0.22% expense ratio.
Look elsewhere if
- Investors focused on the lowest cost: SPHY charges 0.05% and USHY 0.08%, with similar average maturities.
- Those who cannot ride out losses: the fund fell 15.9% from December 2021 to September 2022 and took about 15 months to recover.
- Those who prefer large funds: net assets were about $160 million as of July 31, 2026, the smallest of eight similar funds.

Questions investors ask
Does BKHY pay monthly dividends?
Yes. BKHY pays income every month. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $3.48 per share, a trailing yield of 7.57%. The money comes from interest on its junk bonds, whose average coupon was 6.87% as of July 31, 2026. Payments can change from month to month as the fund buys and sells bonds and as issuers pay, refinance or default.
What's the difference between BKHY and JNK?
They hold very similar bonds, but BKHY costs less and is far smaller. JNK is BKHY's closest match among similar funds, with an average maturity of 5.8 years versus BKHY's 5.7. BKHY charges 0.22% a year versus 0.40% for JNK. JNK had about $7.35 billion in net assets as of June 30, 2026. BKHY had about $160 million. Their returns as of October 27, 2026 were nearly identical: 1.5% versus 1.6% over one year.
Is BKHY an index fund?
No. BKHY buys bonds from the Bloomberg US Corporate High Yield Total Return Index, but its manager uses a credit model to weight them rather than copying the index. So far that hasn't added value. As of December 31, 2025, the fund returned 4.34% a year over five years. The index returned 4.51% over the same period. Since inception, the fund returned 6.78% a year versus 7.00% for the index.
How much did BKHY lose in 2022?
BKHY lost 11.2% in 2022, its worst calendar year, according to its prospectus. Its worst quarter was the three months to June 30, 2022, when it fell 10.3%. From its December 2021 peak to its September 2022 low, it dropped 15.9%. It took until December 2023, about 15 months, to get back to its old high. Rising interest rates and worries about weaker companies hit junk bonds hard that year.
Is BKHY good for retirement income?
It can provide steady monthly income, but with real risk to the amount you put in. The trailing yield was 7.57% as of October 27, 2026. Junk bonds come from companies with weaker credit, so their prices can fall sharply in recessions. BKHY lost 11.2% in 2022. At 0.22% a year, it costs less than JNK and HYG but more than SPHY and USHY.
