How it works
BBBL tracks the Bloomberg US Corporate BBB 10+ Year Index. To qualify, a bond must be taxable, fixed-rate and in US dollars, from a US or foreign company. It needs at least $500 million outstanding and 10 or more years to maturity. It must be rated BBB+, BBB or BBB-, the lowest notches of investment grade, just above 'junk.' Bonds are weighted by market value, so larger issues count more. The index held about 945 bonds as of December 31, 2025, and rebalances monthly.
BondBloxx may skip some bonds. It uses representative sampling, owning a subset chosen to mirror the index's sectors, maturities, ratings, yield and duration (how much prices react to rate changes). As of July 31, 2026, it held 882 bonds. The 10 largest made up just 5.78% of assets, led by CVS Health, Goldman Sachs, Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) and Boeing bonds. At least 80% must be in BBB-rated corporate bonds with 10+ years to maturity. Up to 20% can go into Treasuries, cash, other funds, or futures, options and swaps.
The fund is passive and won't shift to safer bonds in a downturn. As a 'non-diversified' fund, it may hold more of one issuer than a diversified fund. Its 22.3-year average maturity as of July 31, 2026 makes its price very sensitive to interest rates.
What it really costs
- BBBL charges 0.19% a year, versus an average of 0.07% for the similar funds below (7th of 8, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $19 in the first year and $243 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BBBL | $19 | $61 | $107 | $243 |
Structure and tax notes
- Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.
In a retirement portfolio
Its main draw is monthly income from long-dated BBB corporate bonds, but its sensitivity to interest rates rules out a defensive role.
BBBL launched in January 2024, so it has no record from the 2008 financial crisis, the 2020 COVID crash or the 2022 bear market. Its only full calendar year, 2025, returned 7.37%. Its deepest drop, 9.4%, ran from September 16, 2024 to April 8, 2025. Recovery took five more months. It lost 5.6% in the 12 months to October 27, 2026. Long-maturity bonds can fall hard when interest rates jump, so cashing in shares during a slump can lock in losses.
The appeal is income: a 5.97% trailing 12-month yield as of October 27, 2026, paid monthly, so payouts arrive without cashing in shares. The cost is 0.19% a year. In the SEC's standard example, that comes to $243 over 10 years on $10,000, versus 0.03% a year for Vanguard's VCLT. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should weigh the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Income seekers who want monthly payouts. The trailing 12-month yield was 5.97% as of October 27, 2026.
- Investors who want a targeted slice of corporate debt: only BBB-rated bonds maturing in 10 or more years, rather than a broad bond fund.
- Long-term holders who can ride out rate-driven price swings. The bonds averaged 22.3 years to maturity as of July 31, 2026.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors: the 0.19% annual expense ratio is second-highest of 8 comparable funds. VCLT charges 0.03% with the same 22.3-year average maturity.
- Anyone who needs steady value for near-term spending. It lost 5.6% in the 12 months to October 27, 2026, and once fell 9.4%.
- Investors wary of small, young funds. It had about $6.9 million in net assets as of July 31, 2026, and launched only in January 2024.

Questions investors ask
Does BBBL pay monthly dividends?
Yes. BBBL pays income monthly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $2.69 per share, a trailing yield of 5.97%. The money comes from interest on its corporate bonds. As of July 31, 2026, they carried an average coupon (a bond's fixed interest rate) of 5.14%. Payments can rise or fall as bonds enter and leave the index, so past payouts don't guarantee future ones.
What's the difference between BBBL and VCLT?
Both hold long-term corporate bonds averaging about 22.3 years to maturity. But BBBL holds only BBB-rated bonds and costs more: 0.19% a year, versus 0.03% for Vanguard Long-Term Corporate Bond ETF (VCLT). VCLT is also far larger. It had about $9.6 billion in net assets as of August 31, 2026, against about $6.9 million for BBBL as of July 31, 2026. Returns have been close: over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, BBBL lost 5.6% and VCLT lost 5.4%.
Is BBBL good for retirement income?
It may suit retirees who want monthly income and can live with price swings. The trailing 12-month yield was 5.97% as of October 27, 2026. But its bonds averaged 22.3 years to maturity as of July 31, 2026, so prices can fall sharply when interest rates rise. It lost 5.6% over the 12 months to October 27, 2026. BBB bonds also face greater downgrade risk, especially in downturns. Launched in January 2024, it has no record through a major market crash.
Are BBB-rated bonds risky?
They carry more risk than higher-rated investment-grade bonds, though less than 'junk' bonds. BBB is the lowest tier of investment grade. BBBL's prospectus warns these bonds are more likely to be downgraded, especially in an economic downturn or a long period of rising rates. A bond cut below BBB- no longer qualifies for BBBL's index, and its price can drop. BBBL held 882 bonds as of July 31, 2026, which spreads that risk, but its long maturities add sizable interest-rate risk.
What are BBBL's top holdings?
As of July 31, 2026, BBBL's largest holdings were a CVS Health bond due 2048 (0.80% of assets), a Goldman Sachs bond due 2037 (0.69%), a privately placed Space Exploration Technologies (SpaceX) bond due 2036 (0.68%) and a Boeing bond due 2050 (0.62%). AT&T appears several times among the largest positions. Across 882 bonds, the 10 largest totaled just 5.78% of assets. About 85.5% was in bonds of US issuers.
