How it works

ABLG, from Abacus Life, Inc., is actively managed: its adviser, Abacus FCF Advisors LLC, picks stocks rather than copying an index. At least 80% of net assets go into foreign companies' shares or depositary receipts (certificates representing foreign shares). It invests mainly in large and mid-sized companies in developed markets, plus some in emerging markets (countries earlier in their economic development).

The adviser's Abacus FCF Leaders Model scores companies on free cash flow return on invested capital (FCF-ROIC): the cash a business has left after running and reinvesting in itself, compared with the money tied up in it. The model looks at capital spending, accruals (profits booked but not yet received in cash), cash flow margins and asset turnover (sales per dollar of assets). Weights come mainly from FCF-ROIC scores, adjusted for company risk through the business cycle, then blended with free-float market value (the worth of shares available to trade).

Big changes usually come in earnings seasons, but trades can happen anytime. Portfolio turnover was 143%, like replacing the portfolio more than once a year, which adds costs and can raise taxes in taxable accounts. It may use exchange-traded futures to guard against broad price swings. As of September 30, 2025, it focused on Asia and Europe and on technology, consumer discretionary (nonessential goods) and industrial stocks.

What it really costs

  • ABLG charges 0.54% a year, versus an average of 0.09% for the similar funds below.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $55 in the first year and $677 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

A small, actively managed international stock fund with a 0.54% fee, 143% turnover and a 24.32% loss in 2022 may fit better as a modest add-on than as a portfolio's foundation.

ABLG could add foreign stocks to a US-heavy portfolio, but it has swung sharply. Launched in 2017, it has no 2008 record. In the first quarter of 2020, during the COVID crash, it lost 22.25%, yet ended 2020 up 18.83%. In 2022 it fell 24.32%, its worst calendar year on record. Since December 13, 2024, its deepest drop was 20.6%, from February to April 2025; it regained that ground by late May. Needing cash in a year like 2022 could mean cashing out shares at depressed prices.

The fund yielded 2.88% over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, with quarterly payouts. Its 0.54% annual fee compares with 0.09% for iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF; the SEC's standard $10,000 example puts costs at $677 over 10 years. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan needs to look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors wanting foreign exposure tilted toward technology, with TSMC, ASML and SK hynix the largest holdings as of July 31, 2026.
  • Investors comfortable paying 0.54% a year for an adviser's model that ranks companies on free cash flow return on invested capital.
  • Those with mostly US stocks wanting a small add-on spread across China, Switzerland, the UK, Japan, Ireland and South Korea.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: ABLG's 0.54% fee compares with 0.09% for iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF, its closest match by holdings.
  • Anyone wary of small funds: assets were about $16.1 million as of July 31, 2026, after $1.6 million in net outflows over three months.
  • Retirees who need steady account values: ABLG lost 24.32% in 2022 and 22.25% in the first quarter of 2020.

Questions investors ask

What does ABLG invest in?

ABLG invests in stocks of companies from outside the US, chosen by its adviser's free-cash-flow model. As of July 31, 2026, it had 47 holdings. The largest were Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (4.93%), ASML (4.92%), SK hynix (4.05%), Advantest (3.88%) and Novartis (3.30%), and the top 10 made up 35.36% of assets. China was the largest country weight at 19.96%, followed by Switzerland (11.34%) and the UK (7.62%), although the prospectus says the fund invests mainly in developed markets.

How has ABLG performed over the long term?

ABLG's results have been uneven. Per its prospectus, it returned an average of 4.44% a year over the five years to December 31, 2024, and 0.55% in 2024. Calendar years ranged from a 24.04% gain in 2019 to a 24.32% loss in 2022, with a 16.77% loss in 2018. Based on market price, it rose 13.27% in 2025, but it was down 6.91% for 2026 through October 27, and down 5.5% over the 12 months to that date. Past returns don't predict future results.

What's the difference between ABLG and IEMG?

They differ in cost, size and approach. ABLG is actively managed, invests mainly in developed markets using a free-cash-flow model and charges 0.54%. iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF (IEMG) focuses on emerging-market stocks and charges 0.09%. IEMG had $160.9 billion in net assets as of August 31, 2026; ABLG had $16.1 million as of July 31, 2026. IEMG is ABLG's closest match by holdings, yet only 8% of holdings overlap. Over one year, IEMG returned 11.3% to October 30, 2026, while ABLG lost 5.5% to October 27.

Does ABLG pay monthly dividends?

No. ABLG makes payouts quarterly, not monthly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $0.83 per share, a 2.88% yield based on that past year's payments. Like most stock funds, its payouts depend on the dividends its holdings pay, so amounts can vary from one payment to the next. Income isn't the fund's aim: its stated objective is long-term total return, meaning price growth and income combined.

How much does ABLG cost to own?

ABLG's expense ratio, the yearly fee taken out of fund assets, is 0.54%, all of it the management fee, per the prospectus filed November 26, 2025. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 earning 5% a year would incur about $55 in costs over one year, $302 over five and $677 over 10. The fund's 143% turnover adds trading costs on top and can raise taxes in a taxable account. For comparison, iShares Core MSCI Emerging Markets ETF charges 0.09%.
