The short version

Abacus FCF Leaders ETF (ABFL) is an actively managed fund that holds about 58 US stocks, mostly large and mid-sized companies. A model picks and weights them by free cash flow return on invested capital, which compares the cash a company earns with the money tied up in the business. • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +5.00%, +4.07%, -5.35%.

How it works

ABFL does not track an index. Its adviser, Abacus FCF Advisors LLC, runs the fund with its own Abacus FCF Leaders Model. The model scores companies on free cash flow return on invested capital (FCF-ROIC). That measures the cash a business has left after paying for upkeep and investment, compared with the capital it uses. The model also looks at capital spending, accruals (reported earnings not yet backed by cash), cash flow margins and asset turnover. The goal is to find profits that look like they will last. At least 80% of net assets must be in US stocks. The model reviews companies of any size, but the fund ends up mostly in large and mid-caps.

Each stock gets an "active weight" based mainly on its FCF-ROIC score. The adviser then adjusts that weight for its view of the company's risk at that stage of the business cycle. This is blended with the stock's free-float market value (the value of shares available to trade) and rescaled. As of July 31, 2026, the fund held 58 stocks, and the top 10 made up about 31% of assets.

The biggest changes usually come during earnings seasons, when the model updates, but the adviser can trade at any time. The prospectus lists 98% portfolio turnover, meaning the fund traded close to the value of its whole portfolio in a year. The fund may use exchange-traded futures to protect against broad market swings. As of July 31, 2026, it held no derivatives.

What it really costs

  • ABFL charges 0.49% a year, versus an average of 0.33% for the similar funds below (7th of 9, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $50 in the first year and $616 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It is a concentrated, actively traded tilt toward highly profitable US stocks that may sit alongside a broad core fund rather than replace one.

ABFL could add a tilt toward cash-rich, highly profitable US companies. Its record in downturns is mixed. It launched in 2016, so it has no 2008 record. It fell 21.87% in the first quarter of 2020 but still ended that year up 18.06%. Its worst calendar year was 2022, when it lost 14.48%. In price data since December 2024, its deepest drop was 19.9%, from February 19 to April 8, 2025. It recovered by July 3, 2025, about 2.8 months later. Anyone forced to sell near a low like that would lock in the loss. Its one-year beta was 1.11, so it moved a bit more than the market despite its low-volatility goal.

Income is small: the yield was 0.6% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested costs $50 in fees in the first year. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want US stocks chosen for high free cash flow on invested capital. Top holdings as of July 31, 2026 included Apple, NVIDIA and Eli Lilly.
  • People comfortable with a model-driven, actively traded fund (98% turnover) that holds about 58 stocks rather than thousands.
  • Long-term holders who care more about growth than income and can sit through drops like the 19.9% fall in early 2025.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: the 0.49% fee is higher than Dimensional US High Profitability ETF (0.21%) and Fidelity Stocks for Inflation ETF (0.16%).
  • Retirees who need steady income: the yield was 0.6% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
  • Anyone counting on a smoother ride: the fund lost 14.48% in 2022, and its one-year beta was 1.11 as of October 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask

Is ABFL an index fund?

No. ABFL is actively managed. Abacus FCF Advisors LLC uses its own model to score US stocks on free cash flow return on invested capital. It then sets weights by blending those scores with each company's market value. The fund aims to beat the Russell 3000 Index with less volatility, but it does not try to copy that index. Its expense ratio is 0.49%, and its 98% turnover shows it trades often.

What stocks does ABFL hold?

As of July 31, 2026, ABFL held 58 stocks, and the top 10 made up about 31% of assets. The largest were Apple (5.1%), NVIDIA (4.6%), Eli Lilly (3.0%), Bristol-Myers Squibb (2.9%) and AbbVie (2.9%). Others included GE Vernova, Lam Research, Cheniere Energy Partners and Broadcom. Technology and health care were the biggest sectors, and about 98% of assets were in US companies.

Does ABFL pay dividends?

Yes, ABFL pays dividends quarterly, but they are small. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $0.48 per share, a yield of 0.6%. The fund chooses stocks for free cash flow and profitability, not for dividends. That makes it more of a growth holding than an income fund. Income-focused investors may find the payout modest.

ABFL vs DUHP: what's the difference?

Both favor highly profitable US companies, but they differ in cost and size. Dimensional US High Profitability ETF (DUHP) charges 0.21%, compared with ABFL's 0.49%. DUHP had about $12.3 billion in net assets, against ABFL's $526 million, as of July 31, 2026. Only about 29% of their holdings overlap. Over the year to October 27, 2026, DUHP returned 11.7% and ABFL returned 9.7%.

How has ABFL performed over time?

ABFL's long-term record has been strong but uneven. Its prospectus shows a 13.91% average annual return over the five years to December 31, 2024, and 14.59% a year since inception. Calendar-year results ranged from a 30.69% gain in 2021 to a 14.48% loss in 2022. It returned 8.08% in 2025 and 12.4% in 2026 through October 27. Its 9.7% one-year return ranked 8th of 9 among similar funds.
