How it works

XBJA puts at least 80% of its net assets into investments tied to the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, which tracks the S&P 500 Index. It does not buy the stocks. Instead it holds FLEX options, which are exchange-listed options whose strike prices and expiration dates can be customized. As of July 31, 2026, options made up 99.81% of the portfolio and cash 0.26%. Innovator Capital Management is the adviser, and Milliman Financial Risk Management is the sub-adviser.

On the first day of each outcome period, the fund sets up a group of options. One deep in-the-money call tracks the S&P 500 fund. A second call doubles its gains. A sold call sets the cap. A bought put and a sold put create the buffer. For January 1 to December 31, 2026, the prospectus table shows these results before fees: if the S&P 500 fund rises 5%, XBJA gains 10%. A rise of 10% or more returns the 11.94% cap (11.15% after fees). A 10% fall costs 1%, and a 20% fall costs 11%. This is not daily-reset leverage. The doubling applies only to gains over the full period, and only up to the cap.

The stated outcomes apply only to shares held from the first day of the period to the last. At the end of the period, the options settle in cash and the fund buys a new one-year set with a new cap.

What it really costs

  • XBJA charges 0.79% a year, versus an average of 0.86% for the similar funds below (1st of 8, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $81 in the first year and $978 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
XBJA$81$252$439$978
SEC standard example: $10,000 invested, 5% annual return, shares sold at the end of each period.

Structure and tax notes

  • Uses options to limit losses within a range (the buffer) in exchange for a cap on gains over each outcome period; results depend on when you buy relative to the period start.

In a retirement portfolio

RoleDefensive

It gives S&P 500 exposure with a 9% buffer and has swung far less than stocks (one-year beta of 0.4 as of October 27, 2026), though large losses still come through.

XBJA could stand in for part of a stock allocation when the goal is smaller swings. It launched in January 2022, so it has no record from 2008 or 2020. In the 2022 bear market it lost 11.21% for the calendar year, its worst year so far. Its deepest drop was 17.4%, from January 4 to October 12, 2022, and it took about 9.3 months to recover, until July 21, 2023. The buffer applies only over a full outcome period, so anyone who sold partway through that drop locked in the loss. In strong years the cap limits gains. The fund recorded no distributions, so spending cash has to come from selling shares. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested costs $81 in fees in the first year and $978 over 10 years. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want S&P 500 exposure with the first 9% of yearly losses buffered, and who accept a 2026 cap of 11.15% after fees.
  • Buyers who can enter near January 1 and hold until December 31, the only window where the prospectus outcomes apply.
  • Those who value calm: as of October 27, 2026, one-year volatility (the size of price swings) was 5.8% and beta was 0.4.

Look elsewhere if

  • Income seekers: the fund recorded no distributions, so money for spending would have to come from selling shares.
  • Investors who want full participation in strong rallies, since gains in each outcome period stop at the cap, 11.94% before fees for 2026.
  • Those worried about severe crashes: losses past the buffer pass through one-for-one, so a 50% fall means about 41% before fees.

Questions investors ask

Is XBJA a leveraged ETF?

Not in the usual daily-reset sense. XBJA uses FLEX options to seek twice the gain of the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust over a full annual outcome period, up to a cap of 11.94% before fees for 2026. Losses are not doubled. The fund absorbs the first 9% of losses, and any losses beyond that pass through one-for-one. Since there is no daily reset, it avoids the daily compounding effects of daily 2x funds. Buying or selling mid-period can still produce very different results.

Does XBJA pay dividends?

No. The fund recorded no distributions. Because it holds options on the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust rather than the stocks themselves, holders don't collect the S&P 500's dividends directly. All of the fund's return comes from changes in the value of its options. Retirees who need regular cash from this holding would have to sell shares, and the buffer only fully applies to shares held for the whole outcome period.

What happens if I buy XBJA in the middle of the year?

Your results may differ sharply from the stated cap and buffer, which apply only from January 1 to December 31. The fund's market price was up 9.16% for 2026 through October 27, 2026, while the cap after fees is 11.15%, so a late buyer had little upside left. The remaining buffer also changes as the market moves. Innovator posts updated figures daily at innovatoretfs.com/xbja.

How did XBJA do in the 2022 stock market drop?

It lost 11.21% in 2022, its worst calendar year since launch, according to the prospectus. At its lowest point it was down 17.4%, from January 4 to October 12, 2022, and it took about 9.3 months to get back to its old high, on July 21, 2023. The next year was its strongest, with a 17.38% gain in 2023. Its worst quarter was a loss of 11.24% in the quarter ending June 30, 2022.

XBJA vs SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust: what's the difference?

Owning the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust gives you the full rise and fall of the S&P 500, plus its dividends. XBJA is built on that fund but changes the shape of the return. Over each outcome period, it doubles modest gains up to a cap, absorbs the first 9% of losses, and pays no distributions. It charges 0.79% a year, or $81 in the first year on $10,000 in the SEC's example. Its one-year beta of 0.4 as of October 27, 2026, shows it moved far less than the market.
