How it works
XB tracks the ICE BofA Single-B US Cash Pay High Yield Constrained Index. That index starts with the wider ICE BofA US Cash Pay High Yield Index and keeps only bonds rated B1 through B3. The rating is an average of the Moody's, S&P and Fitch ratings. "High yield" or "junk" bonds are rated below investment grade. Their issuers are more likely to default, so they pay more interest. Each bond must have a fixed rate, at least $250 million outstanding and at least one year left to maturity. The issuer must be tied to a developed country such as the U.S., Canada or the U.K. The index had about 605 bonds as of December 31, 2025.
Bonds are weighted by how much of each is outstanding, but no issuer can be more than 2% of the index. Any amount over the cap is spread across the other issuers. The index is rebalanced every month.
BondBloxx Investment Management uses "representative sampling." That means it holds a sample of bonds with traits close to the index's, not every bond in it. It does not make defensive moves when markets fall. At least 80% of assets must be in single-B dollar corporate bonds. As of July 31, 2026, the fund held 622 positions, and the top 10 made up 6.63%. The largest holding was an EchoStar 10.75% bond due 2029, at about 1.2%.
What it really costs
- XB charges 0.3% a year, versus an average of 0.29% for the similar funds below (5th of 8, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $31 in the first year and $381 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| XB | $31 | $97 | $169 | $381 |
Structure and tax notes
- Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.
In a retirement portfolio
XB pays monthly income from higher-yielding single-B corporate bonds, but the credit risk that comes with them makes it a supporting holding, not a foundation.
XB's main appeal is income. It had a trailing yield of 6.98% as of October 27, 2026, paid monthly. Its stress-test record is short. The fund launched on May 26, 2022, so it missed the 2008 crisis, the 2020 crash and most of the 2022 bear market. Its deepest drop was 9.2%, from August 15 to September 27, 2022. It recovered by February 1, 2023, about four months later. All three of its full calendar years were positive, with the lowest return 7.12% in 2024. But single-B bonds are speculative. In a recession, defaults tend to rise and junk bond prices can fall alongside stocks. A retiree who has to sell shares then could lock in losses. Under the SEC's standard example, $10,000 would cost $31 in fees in year one. Past results don't predict future returns, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Income-focused investors who want monthly payouts from junk bonds; the trailing yield was 6.98% as of October 27, 2026.
- Investors who want only single-B credit rather than a broad high yield fund that mixes higher- and lower-rated junk bonds.
- Those who value wide diversification: 622 positions, a 2% issuer cap and a top 10 of just 6.63% as of July 31, 2026.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-conscious investors: the 0.30% expense ratio compares with 0.05% for HYLB and SPHY, which track the broader high yield market.
- Investors who want a long record through recessions; XB launched in May 2022 and has not been through a deep credit downturn.
- Anyone seeking a defensive bond holding, or a large, heavily traded fund; net assets were about $72.1 million as of July 31, 2026.

Questions investors ask
Does XB pay monthly dividends?
Yes. XB pays distributions every month. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $2.66 per share, a trailing yield of 6.98%. The money comes from interest on the fund's bonds, which had an average coupon of 7.41% as of July 31, 2026. Payments can change from month to month as bonds are added, mature or default, so past payouts do not guarantee future ones.
What's the difference between XB and USHY?
XB holds only single-B junk bonds, while iShares Broad USD High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (USHY) covers the wider high yield market. USHY costs 0.08% a year versus XB's 0.30%. It is also far larger: $28.6 billion in net assets as of July 31, 2026, against XB's $72.1 million. XB returned 2.4% over one year and 8.3% a year over three years as of October 27, 2026. USHY returned 1.9% and 8.8% as of October 30, 2026.
What is XB's expense ratio?
XB's expense ratio is 0.30%, all of it management fee, according to its February 27, 2026 prospectus. In the SEC's standard example, which assumes $10,000 invested and a 5% annual return, fees total $31 after one year, $97 after three, $169 after five and $381 after ten. Broad high yield ETFs such as HYLB and SPHY charge 0.05%, while senior loan funds such as BKLN and SRLN charge 0.65% to 0.70%.
How risky is XB?
XB carries real credit risk. It holds junk bonds, which the prospectus says may be speculative and more likely to default than investment-grade bonds. Its deepest drop was 9.2%, between August 15 and September 27, 2022, and it took about four months to recover. Three-year volatility was 5.1% as of October 27, 2026. Bond prices also fall when interest rates rise, though an average maturity of about five years limits that effect.
How has XB performed since it launched?
XB returned 7.54% a year from its May 2022 launch through December 31, 2025, according to its prospectus. Its index returned 8.00% a year over the same period, before fees. Calendar-year returns were 13.55% in 2023, 7.12% in 2024 and 8.00% in 2025. Based on price data, the fund returned 1.46% in 2026 through October 27, which is not a full year. Its one-year return was 2.4% as of that date.
