The short version
Schwab Crypto Thematic ETF (STCE) is an index fund that tracks the Schwab Crypto Thematic Index. It owns stocks of companies linked to cryptocurrency and blockchain, not bitcoin or other crypto directly. Its expense ratio, the yearly fee, is 0.30%. That made it the cheapest of nine similar funds compared, where the average was 0.60%. The trade-off is very large price swings: the fund fell 54.1% from October 15, 2025 to March 30, 2026.

How it works
STCE tries to match the total return of the Schwab Crypto Thematic Index, before fees. The index looks for companies around the world that may benefit from crypto and digital assets. That covers mining or staking (the work that validates crypto transactions), investing in or trading digital assets, using crypto to pay for goods and services, and building blockchain technology. A blockchain is a shared digital ledger that records transactions in linked blocks.
The index uses software that reads large amounts of public documents and searches for theme-related keywords. Each company gets a score for how closely it is tied to the theme, which Schwab calls its "Thematic Beta." Companies that pass liquidity screens are ranked, and up to 50 are kept. Staff at the index provider then review each one by hand. Weights follow each company's score, with minimum and maximum limits. Because the method relies on keywords, not revenue or profits, it can include companies whose main business has little to do with crypto.
As of June 30, 2026, the fund held 35 companies, and the top 10 made up about 54% of assets. The largest were Bitdeer Technologies (8.2%), Hive Digital (5.8%), Core Scientific (5.7%) and Galaxy Digital (5.7%). About 65% was in US-listed companies. The fund is non-diversified, meaning it can put more money into fewer companies. Turnover was 62%. As an index fund, it does nothing to soften losses when prices fall.
What it really costs
- STCE charges 0.3% a year, versus an average of 0.6% for the similar funds below (1st of 9, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $31 in the first year and $381 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| STCE | $31 | $97 | $169 | $381 |
In a retirement portfolio
It is a narrow, non-diversified bet on crypto-related stocks with volatility of 63% over one year, so it fits best as a small add-on rather than a foundation.
STCE could add a small bet on crypto-related businesses at a low cost: 0.30% a year. In the SEC's standard example, that is about $31 in the first year on $10,000. The fund launched in August 2022, so its history doesn't cover the 2008, 2020 or 2022 market crashes. Every full calendar year has been a gain, and the weakest was 36.4% in 2025. That hides a 54.1% drop from October 15, 2025 to March 30, 2026, which had not been recovered as of October 27, 2026. Anyone who had to sell during a fall like that would lock in heavy losses. Income is small: a 2.21% trailing yield as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want a small slice of crypto-related stocks for 0.30% a year, the lowest fee of nine similar funds compared.
- People who prefer listed companies such as Coinbase, Galaxy Digital and Robinhood over holding bitcoin or other digital assets directly.
- Long-term holders who can sit through drops like the 54.1% fall from October 2025 to March 2026 without needing to sell.
Look elsewhere if
- Retirees who need steady income: the trailing yield was 2.21% as of October 27, 2026, and it pays only once a year.
- Investors who want broad diversification: the fund is non-diversified, with 35 companies and about 54% in its top 10 as of June 30, 2026.
- Anyone uneasy with big swings: one-year volatility was 63%, and the fund lost 48.6% in the year to October 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask
Does STCE own bitcoin?
No. STCE owns stocks of companies tied to crypto and blockchain, not bitcoin or other digital assets. As of June 30, 2026, 99.85% of the portfolio was in stocks. The largest holdings included Bitdeer Technologies, Hive Digital, Core Scientific, Galaxy Digital, CleanSpark and Hut 8, plus Coinbase and Robinhood. These companies' share prices often move with crypto prices, but they also depend on each company's own business, debt and management.
What is STCE's expense ratio?
STCE's expense ratio is 0.30%, according to the prospectus filed July 28, 2026. That was the lowest of nine similar crypto-stock funds compared, where the average was 0.60%. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return would cost about $31 after one year, $97 after three years, $169 after five years and $381 after ten years.
What's the difference between STCE and DAPP?
Both own crypto-related stocks, and their portfolios overlap by about 55%. The VanEck Digital Transformation ETF (DAPP) charges 0.51% a year, compared with 0.30% for STCE. As of October 27, 2026, DAPP lost 40% over one year, compared with 48.6% for STCE. DAPP's three-year return was 42.4% a year, compared with 39.1% for STCE. DAPP is somewhat larger, with net assets of about $346 million, compared with $270 million for STCE, as of June 30, 2026.
How has STCE performed since launch?
Performance has been strong but very uneven. Through December 31, 2025, the fund returned 30.82% a year since its August 2022 launch, compared with 16.34% for the MSCI ACWI Index of global stocks. It gained 108.67% in 2023. It then fell 54.1% between October 15, 2025 and March 30, 2026. As of October 27, 2026, it was down 48.6% over one year. Its worst quarter was a 27.13% loss in early 2025.
Does STCE pay dividends?
Yes, but only once a year, and the amount is modest. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, STCE paid $1.13 per share, a trailing yield of 2.21%. Many crypto-related companies pay little or nothing in dividends, so payouts can change a lot from year to year. Investors who need regular income may find a once-a-year payment from such a volatile fund hard to plan around.
