How it works
SPRE tracks the S&P Global All Equity REIT Shariah Capped Index. S&P Dow Jones Indices built it in 2020 with help from ShariaPortfolio, Inc., the fund's sub-adviser. A REIT is a company that owns or finances income-producing property. The index starts from the S&P Global BMI Shariah Index. That index requires a float-adjusted market value (the value of shares available to trade) of at least $100 million and at least $50 million in yearly trading. It removes businesses such as gambling, alcohol and tobacco. Companies must also pass financial-ratio tests on debt, cash and revenue from non-compliant activities. Every REIT that is left goes into the index.
Each holding has a weight cap, and the index is rebalanced and reconstituted every month. The fund generally tries to own every index stock in about the same proportions, but it may hold a representative sample instead. As of February 28, 2026, the index had 44 constituents in 10 countries. The fund held 24 positions as of August 31, 2026. At least 80% of assets must be in index REITs. Up to 20% can go into other Sharia-compliant securities, and every investment is pre-screened before purchase. Portfolio turnover was 49%.
The fund is non-diversified, so a few stocks can carry large weights. As of August 31, 2026, Welltower, Prologis, Equinix and Goodman Group were each between 11.6% and 12.6% of assets. The fund held no derivatives.
What it really costs
- SPRE charges 0.5% a year, versus an average of 0.39% for the similar funds below (5th of 9, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $51 in the first year and $628 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SPRE | $51 | $160 | $280 | $628 |
In a retirement portfolio
SPRE is a concentrated, non-diversified REIT fund whose 38.1% drop had not been recovered as of October 27, 2026, so it fits best as a small part of a larger portfolio.
SPRE could add global, Sharia-screened real estate and monthly income to a portfolio built mainly on broad stock and bond funds. Its trailing 12-month yield was 4.7% as of October 27, 2026. The fund launched in December 2020, so it has no record from the 2008 crisis or the 2020 COVID crash. It fell 33.5% in the 2022 bear market. 2022 was also its worst calendar year, down 29.06% according to the prospectus. Its deepest drop, 38.1% from December 31, 2021 to October 27, 2023, had not been fully recovered as of October 27, 2026. Anyone who sold shares for spending money during that stretch would have locked in losses. The 0.50% fee is above the 0.39% average of similar funds. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want Sharia-screened real estate, with every holding pre-screened and an index built with ShariaPortfolio, Inc.
- Income-focused holders who want monthly payouts. The trailing yield was 4.7% as of October 27, 2026.
- Those who want some REITs outside the US. US holdings were 61.9% of assets, Australia 16.0% and Malaysia 7.2% as of August 31, 2026.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors. SPRE's 0.50% fee compares with 0.11% for BBRE and 0.08% for XLRE.
- Anyone uneasy with concentration. This non-diversified fund held 24 positions, with the top 10 at 76.7% of assets as of August 31, 2026.
- Those who can't sit through long slumps. A 38.1% drop that began in December 2021 had not been recovered as of October 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask
Is SPRE halal?
SPRE is built to follow Sharia rules. Its index includes only REITs that belong to the S&P Global BMI Shariah Index. That index removes businesses such as gambling, alcohol and tobacco. It also tests each company's debt, cash and revenue from non-compliant activities. The prospectus says every investment is pre-screened and approved as Sharia compliant before the fund buys it. Investors with specific religious requirements may want to review the screening method with their own scholar.
Does SPRE pay monthly dividends?
Yes. SPRE pays distributions every month. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $0.867 per share, a trailing yield of 4.7%. REIT payouts rise and fall with rents and property values, so the amount isn't fixed. In US taxable accounts, much REIT income is generally taxed as ordinary income rather than at the lower qualified-dividend rates.
What is SPRE's expense ratio?
SPRE's expense ratio is 0.50%, according to its prospectus filed March 26, 2026. The SEC's standard example assumes $10,000 invested, 5% yearly returns and shares sold at the end of each period. On that basis, costs come to about $51 after one year and $628 over 10 years. The fee ranks 5th of 9 among similar funds, whose average is 0.39%. JPMorgan BetaBuilders MSCI US REIT ETF (BBRE) charges 0.11%, and Real Estate Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLRE) charges 0.08%.
SPRE vs RITA: what's the difference?
Both charge 0.50% a year. Among similar funds, ETFB Green SRI REITs ETF (RITA) shares the most holdings with SPRE: 35%, based on the latest N-PORT reports. As of October 27, 2026, RITA had returned 3.9% over one year and 10.8% a year over three years. SPRE returned -3.5% and 8.9% over the same periods. SPRE is much larger, with about $212 million in net assets as of August 31, 2026. RITA had about $8.7 million as of July 31, 2026.
Has SPRE recovered from its 2022 losses?
Not as of October 27, 2026. SPRE's deepest drop was 38.1%, from December 31, 2021 to October 27, 2023. The fund had not regained its earlier peak by October 27, 2026. Its 2022 calendar-year return was -29.06%, according to the prospectus. Gains since then have been modest: 9.74% in 2023, 2.35% in 2024 and 3.14% in 2025. Through October 27, 2026, it was down 2.4% for the year to date.
