How it works
SBND tries to match the Beta Advantage Short Term Bond Index. Bloomberg owns and calculates the index, and Columbia Management helped design it. The index follows set rules. It splits the bond market into four segments: US securitized debt, investment-grade corporate bonds, high-yield ("junk") corporate bonds, and emerging-market government and government-linked debt. Each segment is built around yield, quality and liquidity. Duration measures how much a bond's price moves when interest rates change, and the index's duration is not expected to go above 3.5 years. It was 3 years as of January 31, 2025. At that level, a 1-point rise in rates would cut value by about 3%.
The index held 3,720 bonds as of January 31, 2026. Columbia does not buy them all. It uses "representative sampling," which means holding a smaller set expected to behave like the whole index. The prospectus says the fund usually holds 500 to 700 positions, but the July 31, 2026 filing listed 1,130. The managers do not pick bonds on their merits or move to safer holdings in rough markets.
The index rebalances monthly, and portfolio turnover was 192%. The five largest positions as of July 31, 2026 were "to-be-announced" (TBA) contracts. These are agreements to buy Uniform Mortgage-Backed Securities on a future date, and they are often rolled forward month to month. Together they made up about 10% of assets. Cash made up 10.39%.
What it really costs
- SBND charges 0.25% a year, versus an average of 0.18% for the similar funds below (6th of 8, cheapest first).
- The fee includes a 0.01% waiver from the adviser, which may end.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $26 in the first year and $330 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SBND | $26 | $83 | $145 | $330 |
Structure and tax notes
- Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.
In a retirement portfolio
It pays monthly from a mix of short-term corporate, mortgage and emerging-market bonds, with less rate sensitivity than longer bond funds but more credit risk than Treasuries.
SBND could provide monthly income. Its trailing 12-month yield was 4.57%, or $0.84 a share, as of October 27, 2026. A short duration limits losses when rates rise, but it did not prevent them in 2022. The fund lost 7% that year, its worst calendar year. It fell 7.3% between March and October 2022 and took about 13 months to recover, in November 2023. It launched in September 2021, so it has no record through the 2008 or 2020 crashes. Junk and emerging-market bonds can drop when markets panic, so someone selling shares in a bad year may have to sell at a loss. Under the SEC example, costs on $10,000 are $26 for one year and $330 over 10 years. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors seeking monthly bond income; the trailing 12-month yield was 4.57% as of October 27, 2026.
- Holders wanting less interest-rate sensitivity than longer-term bond funds, since the index's duration is capped at 3.5 years.
- Investors comfortable with some junk-bond and emerging-market debt, including Indonesia, Turkey and Colombia, in exchange for extra yield.
Look elsewhere if
- Anyone expecting Treasury-like safety: about 70% was in corporate bonds and 15.6% in foreign government debt as of July 31, 2026.
- Investors who want a long track record; the fund launched in September 2021 and lost 7% in 2022.
- Those wanting a large fund; net assets were about $197 million as of July 31, 2026, after $3.7 million of outflows over three months.

Questions investors ask
Does SBND pay monthly dividends?
Yes. SBND pays distributions monthly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $0.84 a share, a trailing yield of 4.57%. The amount changes from month to month. It depends on the interest the fund's bonds earn, minus expenses, and on any gains or losses it realizes. The prospectus warns that payouts can fall if the fund's income declines, so the monthly check is not fixed.
Is SBND a Treasury bond ETF?
No. SBND holds almost no US Treasuries. As of July 31, 2026, about 70% of assets were in corporate bonds and 15.6% in foreign government debt. Another 10% was in mortgage securities from government-sponsored agencies. Indonesia, Turkey, Colombia and Mexico each made up roughly 2%. Large corporate holdings included bonds from Barclays, HSBC, T-Mobile, HCA and Xcel Energy. That mix brings more credit risk than a Treasury fund, along with more yield.
What is SBND's expense ratio?
SBND's expense ratio is 0.25% a year, according to the prospectus filed February 26, 2026. The SEC's standard example assumes $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return. On that basis, costs would be about $26 after one year, $83 after three years, $145 after five years and $330 after ten years. It is worth comparing this with the fees of other short-term bond funds that hold a similar mix of corporate, mortgage and emerging-market debt.
How did SBND do in 2022 when interest rates rose?
SBND lost 7% in 2022, its worst calendar year. Its weakest quarter was the first quarter of 2022, at -4.26%. It fell 7.3% from March to October 2022 and recovered by November 2023. Results improved afterward: 6.74% in 2023, 4.81% in 2024 and 7.66% in 2025. Its average annual return since its 2021 launch was 2.51% as of December 31, 2025.
Is SBND an index fund or actively managed?
SBND is an index fund. It tracks the Beta Advantage Short Term Bond Index from Bloomberg, which Columbia Management helped design. It does not buy every bond in the index. Instead, it holds a sample meant to behave like the full index. The managers do not pick bonds on their merits. Still, the monthly rebalancing produced 192% portfolio turnover, and frequent trading can create taxable capital gains for shareholders.
