How it works
NUMG is an index fund. It tries to match the Nuveen ESG USA Mid-Cap Growth Index, which MSCI owns and calculates, and the fund's managers don't pick stocks. The index starts from the MSCI USA Mid-Cap Growth Index. That is a group of mid-sized U.S. companies chosen for growth traits such as forecast earnings growth, past earnings growth and sales growth. As of December 31, 2025, those companies ranged from $4.8 billion to $40.9 billion in float-adjusted market value, which counts only shares available to investors.
Next come the ESG screens, based on scores from MSCI ESG Research. Companies with significant businesses in alcohol, tobacco, nuclear power, gambling, or weapons and firearms are removed, along with those above certain carbon thresholds. The rest are ranked against peers in their sector. The highest scorers get in until they add up to half of that sector's market value in the starting index. Stocks are weighted by size, then adjusted so sector weights roughly match the starting index. The index had 41 stocks as of December 31, 2025, with a large share in information technology.
The index rebalances every quarter, in February, May, August and November, and the fund trades soon after. Portfolio turnover was 95%: the fund's trading over the year added up to almost its whole portfolio, which can raise trading costs. There is no leverage and there are no options or derivatives. Stocks made up nearly 100% of assets as of July 31, 2026.
What it really costs
- NUMG charges 0.31% a year, versus an average of 0.24% for the similar funds below (5th of 7, cheapest first).
- Of that, 0.3% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $32 in the first year and $393 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NUMG | $32 | $100 | $174 | $393 |
In a retirement portfolio
It is a concentrated, ESG-screened basket of about 40 mid-sized growth stocks with large past drops and almost no income, so it fits as a smaller add-on rather than a core holding.
NUMG could add mid-sized U.S. growth companies with an ESG filter, but it behaves like a high-risk slice. In the 2022 bear market it fell 32.9% and needed about 25 months, until November 2024, to recover. Its deepest drop was 38.7%, from November 2021 to October 2022, and it had not been fully recovered as of October 27, 2026. Its worst calendar year was 2022, down 28.2%. The fund didn't exist in 2008, and price data doesn't cover the 2020 crash. Selling shares in a year like 2022 would lock in steep losses. Income is minimal: the yield was 0.02% as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year. In the SEC's standard $10,000 example, costs come to $32 after one year and $393 after ten. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want mid-sized U.S. growth stocks without companies in tobacco, alcohol, gambling, weapons or nuclear power.
- Those comfortable with about 40 stocks, led by Datadog, Comfort Systems USA and Axon Enterprise as of July 31, 2026.
- Long-term holders who can sit through drops like the 32.9% fall in 2022 and keep the fund as a smaller slice.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors: the 0.31% expense ratio compares with 0.07% for Vanguard's VOT and 0.06% for iShares' IMCG.
- Anyone who needs income: the yield was 0.02% as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year.
- Investors who may need to sell in a downturn: the 38.7% drop from November 2021 had not been recovered by October 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask
Is NUMG good for retirement?
It may suit only a small part of a retirement portfolio. NUMG holds about 40 mid-sized U.S. growth stocks and pays almost no income, with a 0.02% yield as of October 27, 2026. Its price has swung widely. It fell 28.2% in 2022, and its deepest drop, 38.7%, had not been fully recovered as of October 27, 2026. Investors who need steady income, or who may have to sell in a downturn, may find broader or more defensive funds a closer match.
What's the difference between NUMG and VOT?
The main differences are cost, size and the ESG screen. Vanguard Mid-Cap Growth ETF (VOT) charges 0.07% a year, against 0.31% for NUMG. VOT had about $34.8 billion in assets as of June 30, 2026, while NUMG had about $350 million as of July 31, 2026. NUMG keeps only the companies with the highest ESG scores, so the two funds share only about 21% of their holdings. Over three years, VOT returned 17.4% a year through October 30, 2026, and NUMG returned 10.9% a year through October 27, 2026.
Does NUMG pay dividends?
Yes, but very little. NUMG makes one payment a year. Its yield over the past 12 months was 0.02% as of October 27, 2026, about $0.01 per share. That is common for growth funds, because growth companies tend to reinvest their profits rather than pay them out. Investors who want income from their portfolio would need to get it from other holdings.
What are NUMG's top holdings?
As of July 31, 2026, the largest holdings were Datadog (5.1%), Comfort Systems USA (3.8%), Axon Enterprise (3.4%), eBay (3.3%) and Lumentum Holdings (3.2%). The top 10 made up about 33% of the fund, which held 43 stocks. The prospectus says a large share of the index is in information technology, so swings in tech stocks can move the fund sharply.
How has NUMG performed?
It has trailed the broad U.S. market. According to the prospectus, NUMG returned 0.63% in 2025 and 1.9% a year over the five years through December 31, 2025. The MSCI USA Index returned 17.75% and 13.87% over the same periods. Since its December 2016 launch, the fund returned 10.08% a year. Yearly results have varied a lot: up 45.6% in 2020 and down 28.2% in 2022. As of October 27, 2026, it was down 3.2% year to date.
