The short version
Nuveen ESG High Yield Corporate Bond ETF (NUHY) tracks a Bloomberg MSCI index of US-dollar "junk" bonds, meaning corporate bonds rated below investment grade. The index screens those bonds using environmental, social and governance (ESG) scores. As of October 27, 2026, it had a trailing yield of 6.92%, paid monthly. Its 0.30% annual fee is more than broad high-yield funds such as SPHY (0.05%) charge, but less than HYG (0.49%).

How it works
NUHY tries to match the Bloomberg MSCI U.S. High Yield Very Liquid ESG Select Index, before fees. That index starts from the Bloomberg U.S. High Yield Very Liquid Index. It holds fixed-rate US-dollar corporate bonds rated BB+ or lower, with at least one year left to maturity, $500 million or more outstanding, and issued within the past five years. Defaulted bonds don't qualify. No single issuer can make up more than 2% of that base index. The fund's adviser has no say in what the index holds.
MSCI ESG Research scores each company against others in its industry on issues such as climate change, how it treats employees, product safety and governance. The index drops bonds below a minimum ESG rating. It also drops companies with significant alcohol, tobacco, nuclear power, gambling or weapons activities, and companies above set carbon limits. The remaining bonds are weighted by market value within each sector, and sector weights mirror the base index. The index then tilts toward higher ESG scores while keeping credit quality close to the base index. It held 639 bonds as of October 31, 2025.
The fund uses representative sampling, meaning it owns a subset of bonds that behaves like the whole index. It had 388 holdings as of July 31, 2026. The index rebalances monthly, and the fund's portfolio turnover was 49%. Many of the bonds may be Rule 144A securities, which are sold privately to large institutions and can be harder to trade.
What it really costs
- NUHY charges 0.3% a year, versus an average of 0.24% for the similar funds below (5th of 8, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $31 in the first year and $381 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NUHY | $31 | $96 | $169 | $381 |
Structure and tax notes
- Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.
In a retirement portfolio
It holds junk bonds and pays monthly, with a trailing yield of 6.92% as of October 27, 2026, though its price can drop sharply.
NUHY can add monthly income. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $1.42 a share, a 6.92% yield. The trade-off is credit risk. The fund launched in 2019, so it has no 2008 record. Its worst quarter was the COVID crash (−11.4% in the first quarter of 2020). In the 2022 bear market it fell about 16.7% and didn't regain its peak until May 2024. Its worst calendar year was 2022 (−12.15%). Its deepest drop, 16.9%, took about 20 months to recover. Anyone who had to sell shares in 2022 would have locked in those losses. Defaults can also cut the income it pays.
It costs 0.30% a year. In the SEC's standard example of $10,000 invested, that comes to $31 in the first year and $381 over 10 years. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want monthly income from junk bonds. The trailing yield was 6.92% as of October 27, 2026.
- Bond investors who want high-yield exposure that excludes tobacco, alcohol, gambling, weapons, nuclear power and high-carbon companies.
- Investors willing to pay 0.30% a year for ESG screening across 388 bond holdings, with no position above about 1.8% (July 31, 2026).
Look elsewhere if
- Investors focused on cost. SPHY (0.05%), BBHY (0.07%) and USHY (0.08%) charge far less for broad high-yield exposure.
- Retirees who need stable principal. NUHY lost 12.15% in 2022, and its deepest drop took about 20 months to recover.
- Those who prefer larger funds. NUHY had $110.7 million in net assets as of July 31, 2026, the smallest of eight similar funds.

Questions investors ask
Does NUHY pay monthly dividends?
Yes. NUHY pays distributions monthly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $1.42 a share, a trailing yield of 6.92%. The income comes from interest on its junk bonds, which had an average coupon of 6.94% as of July 31, 2026. Payouts can shrink if rates fall and companies pay off their higher-interest bonds early, or if companies in the fund default.
Is NUHY good for retirement income?
It may suit retirees who want monthly income and can live with sharp price drops. The trailing yield was 6.92% as of October 27, 2026. But these are below-investment-grade bonds. The fund lost 12.15% in 2022 and 11.4% in the first quarter of 2020. Its deepest drop, 16.9%, took about 20 months to recover. In many plans it works better alongside high-quality bonds than in place of them.
What's the difference between NUHY and XBB?
Both hold US-dollar high-yield corporate bonds with an average maturity of 6.2 years. XBB is the closest match by maturity and issuer mix. As its name says, XBB focuses on BB-rated bonds, the top tier of junk. NUHY tracks an ESG-screened index of the broader high-yield market. XBB costs 0.20% a year and NUHY 0.30%. As of October 27, 2026, XBB returned 1.4% over one year to NUHY's 0.5%. Over three years NUHY was ahead, 8.5% a year to 8.1%.
What is NUHY's expense ratio?
NUHY's expense ratio is 0.30% a year, according to its prospectus filed November 25, 2025. In the SEC's standard example ($10,000 invested, 5% annual return), that's $31 after one year, $169 after five years and $381 after ten. The similar funds we compare average about 0.24%. NUHY is cheaper than HYG (0.49%), JNK and FLHY (0.40% each), but much pricier than SPHY (0.05%), BBHY (0.07%) and USHY (0.08%).
How has NUHY performed compared with its index?
It has trailed both its own index and the broader high-yield market. Through December 31, 2024, NUHY returned 2.41% a year over five years. Its ESG index returned 2.79%, and the unscreened Bloomberg US High Yield Very Liquid Index returned 3.61%. In price returns through October 27, 2026, NUHY gained 0.5% over one year, last among eight similar funds. Over three years it gained 8.5% a year.
