The short version
AXS Knowledge Leaders ETF (KNO) is an actively managed global stock fund. It does not track an index. It buys mid- and large-cap companies in developed countries that its adviser calls 'knowledge leaders': firms that turn research, brands and other intangible spending into lasting advantages. At least 40% of the fund sits outside the US. As of June 30, 2026, Micron Technology alone was about 23% of assets, and the fund charges 0.75% a year.

How it works
KNO's adviser starts with companies in the top 85% by market value across 22 developed countries, leaving out Hong Kong. It drops stocks priced under $1 and the 10% that trade least. It then rebuilds each company's financial history back to 1980. In that rebuild, spending on research and development, advertising, brand building and employee training counts as an investment, much like a new factory, rather than an expense that disappears.
Next comes a pass/fail screen. It checks innovation intensity, balance sheet strength, steady earnings growth and operating cash flow. Companies that pass every level are 'knowledge leaders.' The fund does not buy them all. It picks the ones the adviser sees as easiest to trade. At least 80% of assets go to knowledge leaders, with no more than 25% in any one industry. At least 40% goes to companies based outside the US, sometimes through depositary receipts, which are US-traded certificates for foreign shares.
The prospectus gives no fixed weighting formula or rebalancing schedule. A stock may be sold if it fails the screen, to harvest tax losses, or to swap in a more easily traded stock. In unsettled markets the fund may hold cash. As of June 30, 2026, it held 65 positions. The top 10 made up 43% of assets, and Micron alone was about 23%.
What it really costs
- KNO charges 0.75% a year.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $77 in the first year and $930 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KNO | $77 | $240 | $417 | $930 |
In a retirement portfolio
KNO adds global, innovation-focused stocks, but with roughly 23% in a single company and a 0.75% fee, it fits better as a smaller slice than as a core holding.
KNO could add developed-market stocks outside the US, especially Japan, which was 22% of assets as of June 30, 2026. The fund launched in 2015, so it missed the 2008 crisis. Its filings show a 16.95% gain in 2020. In 2022, its worst calendar year, it lost 22.81%, including a 15.88% drop in the second quarter alone. In price data starting July 2024, its deepest fall was 15.6%, from September 2024 to April 2025. It made that back by May 15, 2025. Anyone forced to sell in a year like 2022 would have locked in losses.
KNO is not built for income. Its yield was 0.87% as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year. In the SEC's standard $10,000 example, costs come to $77 after one year and $930 after ten. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want an actively managed global stock fund with at least 40% outside the US, including a 22% Japan stake as of June 30, 2026.
- People drawn to a screen that rewards research spending, strong balance sheets and steady earnings, and who accept a 0.75% annual fee for it.
- Long-term holders who could sit through drops like the fund's 22.81% loss in 2022 and keep it as a smaller part of a portfolio.
Look elsewhere if
- Anyone uneasy with one stock driving results: Micron Technology was about 23% of assets as of June 30, 2026.
- Income seekers: the yield was 0.87% as of October 27, 2026, and the fund pays only once a year.
- Cost-conscious investors who want a large, low-cost fund: KNO charges 0.75% a year and had about $45 million in net assets as of June 30, 2026.

Questions investors ask
Is KNO an index fund?
No. KNO is actively managed by AXS and follows no index. The adviser screens developed-market companies using its own method. That method treats research, advertising, brand and training spending as investments, then grades companies pass/fail on innovation, balance sheet strength, earnings growth and cash flow. From the companies that pass, it picks the ones that are easiest to trade. At least 40% of assets must be in companies outside the US.
Why does KNO hold so much Micron stock?
As of June 30, 2026, Micron Technology made up about 23% of KNO. The next-largest holding, Trane Technologies, was about 2.9%. The prospectus does not explain the size of any one position. Its rules cap a single industry at 25% of assets but describe no cap on a single stock. Because of this, Micron's ups and downs can move the whole fund far more than any other holding.
Does KNO pay dividends?
Yes, but not much, and only once a year. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, KNO paid about $0.55 per share, a yield of 0.87%. The fund's goal is long-term growth, not income. People who want regular cash from their investments may find that a once-a-year payout this small doesn't do much to cover spending.
What is KNO's expense ratio?
KNO's expense ratio is 0.75% a year, according to the prospectus filed July 23, 2026. All of it is the management fee, and no fee waiver applies. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 earning 5% a year would pay about $77 in costs after one year, $240 after three, $417 after five and $930 after ten.
How has KNO performed over the long term?
As of December 31, 2025, KNO returned 8.69% a year on average over 10 years, 5.25% over five years and 19.72% over one year. Calendar years ranged from a 27.62% gain in 2017 to a 22.81% loss in 2022. Based on share prices, it was up 23.6% in 2026 through October 27. Past returns don't predict future results.
