How it works
KGRN, managed by Krane Funds Advisors, tracks the MSCI China IMI Environment 10/40 Index. MSCI picks Chinese companies that earn at least 50% of revenue from alternative energy, sustainable water, pollution prevention and energy efficiency. As of March 31, 2026, the index held 50 stocks, led by consumer discretionary stocks (39.2%), industrials (26.2%) and utilities (20.0%).
Stocks are weighted by free-float market value, which counts only shares available to outside investors. A 10/40 cap limits any one company to 10% at each quarterly rebalance, and holdings above 5% can total no more than 40%. Weights can drift in between. As of June 30, 2026, the largest positions were BYD (7.4%), NIO (6.3%) and XPeng (5.9%). Contemporary Amperex Technology appears twice, as Hong Kong-listed H-shares (5.4%) and mainland A-shares (5.3%). The top 10 made up 52.6% of assets.
The fund must keep at least 80% of net assets in index securities or close equivalents. It expects to own every index stock but may use representative sampling, holding a subset that behaves like the index. Up to 20% can go into other stocks, derivatives such as swaps or futures, other ETFs or cash. For A-shares, it plans to use Stock Connect, a trading link based outside mainland China. The fund is non-diversified, so single stocks can move it more.
What it really costs
- KGRN charges 0.79% a year, versus an average of 0.52% for the similar funds below (7th of 7, cheapest first).
- Of that, 0.78% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $81 in the first year and $978 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| KGRN | $81 | $252 | $439 | $978 |
In a retirement portfolio
KGRN is a narrow, non-diversified, single-country theme fund that has suffered deep losses, so it fits best as a small position alongside broader holdings.
KGRN could add Chinese electric-car makers, the battery maker Contemporary Amperex Technology and power producers like China Yangtze Power to a portfolio. That exposure comes with sharp swings. The fund launched in October 2017, so it has no record from 2008. In the 2020 COVID crash it fell 27.1% and recovered in about 2.6 months. In the 2022 bear market it fell 43.8%. Its worst calendar year was 2022, at -39.67%. Its deepest drop was 66.3%, from February 2021 to February 2024, and it had not recovered as of October 27, 2026. Anyone forced to sell in a slump could lock in large losses.
Income is small. The trailing yield was 1.11% as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year. In the SEC's standard example, costs on $10,000 come to $978 over 10 years. Past results don't predict future returns, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want a small, targeted stake in Chinese electric-car, battery and clean-power companies such as BYD, NIO and Contemporary Amperex Technology.
- Patient holders who can sit through multiyear drops like its 66.3% decline from February 2021 to February 2024.
- Investors who want China clean-tech exposure that broad China funds lack: KGRN shares just 5% of its holdings with iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI).
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors: KGRN's 0.79% expense ratio is above all six similar funds compared, including ICLN at 0.41% and CXSE at 0.32%.
- Retirees who need regular income: the trailing yield was 1.11% as of October 27, 2026, paid only once a year.
- Anyone who wants broad diversification: this non-diversified fund holds about 50 Chinese stocks, with 52.6% of assets in its top 10 as of June 30, 2026.

Questions investors ask
What does KGRN invest in?
KGRN holds Chinese clean-technology stocks. It tracks the MSCI China IMI Environment 10/40 Index, which includes companies earning at least 50% of revenue from alternative energy, sustainable water, pollution prevention and energy efficiency. As of June 30, 2026, it held 50 stocks, led by BYD (7.4%), NIO (6.3%) and XPeng (5.9%), plus Contemporary Amperex Technology through both Hong Kong and mainland share classes. Hong Kong holdings made up 60.5% of assets and mainland China 35.8%.
What is KGRN's expense ratio?
KGRN's expense ratio is 0.79% a year, per its prospectus filed July 29, 2026, including a 0.78% management fee. In the SEC's standard example, a $10,000 investment earning 5% a year would cost about $81 after one year, $439 after five years and $978 after ten. KGRN ranks 7th of 7 on cost against six funds with overlapping holdings, which average 0.52%. The iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI), for example, charges 0.59%.
Does KGRN pay dividends?
Yes, once a year, and the amount is small. KGRN's trailing 12-month yield was 1.11% as of October 27, 2026, or about $0.23 per share. For retirees, a single annual payment does not line up with monthly bills, and the yield is low for an income plan. The fund is built to track Chinese clean-technology stocks, so long-term results depend mostly on share prices rather than payouts.
Is KGRN good for retirement?
KGRN is a narrow, volatile fund, so it may suit only retirement savers who can tolerate deep, lasting losses. Its largest drop was 66.3%, from February 16, 2021, to February 5, 2024, and it had not recovered as of October 27, 2026. Per its prospectus, it lost an average of 8.21% a year over the five years to December 31, 2025, including a 39.67% loss in 2022. The prospectus also says the fund is not by itself a complete investment program.
What's the difference between KGRN and ICLN?
KGRN holds only Chinese companies and costs more; ICLN is global and cheaper. iShares Global Clean Energy ETF (ICLN) charges 0.41% versus KGRN's 0.79%. ICLN's net assets were about $2.3 billion as of July 31, 2026, against KGRN's $52.9 million as of June 30, 2026. Only about 12% of holdings overlap. Over the year to October 27, 2026, ICLN returned -4.3% and KGRN -30.9%. Even the closest match by holdings, Global X MSCI China Consumer Discretionary ETF (CHIQ), overlaps just 17%.
