How it works
IQSU is a passive fund. It does not pick stocks itself. Instead it tracks the NYLIM Candriam U.S. Large Cap Equity Index. The fund's advisor, part of New York Life, is also the index provider, and Candriam serves as its index consultant. The process starts with stocks making up about 85% of the U.S. market's value. Each company is scored against others in its own industry. The scores cover how it treats customers and employees, its environmental record, its governance, and its impact on society. They also cover its exposure to trends such as climate change, digitalization and aging populations. Companies ranked in the top 70% of each sector move on to the next step.
The second step removes companies with continued, significant breaches of the UN Global Compact principles on human rights, labor, environment and corruption. It also removes companies above set thresholds in alcohol, tobacco, gambling, armaments, nuclear and adult content, and companies that use animal testing or genetic modification in research. The companies that remain are weighted by market capitalization, so bigger companies get bigger weights. That is why Apple was 9.9% of assets as of July 31, 2026.
The index is rebalanced quarterly. A company whose rank slips to between the top 70% and 80% can stay in at a reduced weight for two more rebalances, which limits trading. Portfolio turnover was 31%.
What it really costs
- IQSU charges 0.09% a year, versus an average of 0.13% for the similar funds below (3rd of 9, cheapest first).
- The fee includes a 0.01% waiver from the adviser, which may end.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $9 in the first year and $115 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IQSU | $9 | $29 | $51 | $115 |
In a retirement portfolio
A market-cap-weighted basket of about 264 large U.S. companies with ESG screens, at 0.09% a year, could serve as a main U.S. stock holding for investors who want those screens.
IQSU offers broad large-cap U.S. stock exposure with ESG screens at a low cost. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $115 over 10 years. It provides little income: the trailing 12-month yield was 0.89% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
It falls when the stock market falls. The fund launched in December 2019, so it has no 2008 record. It dropped 31.3% in the 2020 COVID crash and recovered in about 3.6 months. In the 2022 bear market it fell 26.4% and needed about 14 months, until December 12, 2023, to recover. Its worst calendar year was 2022, at -22.02%. Selling shares to cover expenses in a slump like that would lock in losses. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want large U.S. stocks screened to exclude tobacco, alcohol, gambling and armaments, at a cost of 0.09% a year.
- Long-term holders comfortable with concentration: technology made up 34.2% of assets, and the top 10 holdings 42.7%, as of July 31, 2026.
- Those who prefer ESG screening within each sector, which keeps exposure across most of the economy rather than dropping whole industries outright.
Look elsewhere if
- Income seekers: the trailing yield was 0.89% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
- Cost-focused investors without ESG preferences: Vanguard Large Cap ETF (VV) charges 0.04% and shares 59% of IQSU's holdings.
- Investors who prefer a larger fund: IQSU had $327.5 million in assets as of July 31, 2026, 8th of 9 among similar funds.

Questions investors ask
What is the IQSU expense ratio?
IQSU's expense ratio is 0.09% a year, according to its prospectus filed August 26, 2026. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 earning 5% a year would cost about $9 in the first year and $115 over 10 years. That is below the 0.13% average of similar funds and ranks 3rd lowest of 9. Vanguard ESG U.S. Stock ETF (ESGV) also charges 0.09%, while Vanguard Large Cap ETF (VV), a broad large-cap fund, charges 0.04%.
What's the difference between IQSU and DSI?
Both hold large U.S. companies screened on ESG criteria, and about 63% of their holdings overlap. They differ mainly in index and cost. IQSU tracks the NYLIM Candriam U.S. Large Cap Equity Index for 0.09% a year. iShares ESG MSCI KLD 400 ETF (DSI) charges 0.25%. DSI is much larger, with $5.3 billion in assets as of July 31, 2026, compared with IQSU's $327.5 million. Through October 27, 2026, IQSU led over one year (15.9% vs. 14.5%). DSI led over three years (25% vs. 22% a year).
Does IQSU pay dividends?
Yes. IQSU pays dividends quarterly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.56 per share, a yield of 0.89%. The yield is low because the fund holds large companies weighted by size rather than focusing on dividend payers. Retirees who need steady income would likely have to get most of it from other holdings.
What companies does IQSU exclude?
IQSU's index removes companies with continued, significant breaches of the UN Global Compact principles on human rights, labor, environment and anti-corruption. It also drops companies above set thresholds in alcohol, tobacco, gambling, armaments, nuclear and adult content. Companies operating in countries with oppressive regimes, or using animal testing or genetic modification in research, are excluded too. Large tech companies still dominate. As of July 31, 2026, Apple was 9.9% of assets, followed by Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon.
How has IQSU performed since launch?
According to its prospectus, IQSU returned 14.29% in 2025. It averaged 12.51% a year over the five years to December 31, 2025, and 15.13% a year from its December 2019 launch to that date. Its 2026 price return was 15.96% through October 27, 2026. Over the three years to that date it gained 22% a year, the lowest of nine similar funds compared. Its one-year return of 15.9% was the highest of the nine.
