How it works
IDNA follows an index run by ICE Data Indices. The index starts with companies listed in 42 developed and emerging market countries that earn at least half their revenue from biopharmaceutical, healthcare equipment or healthcare services businesses, as defined by FactSet's industry classification system. ICE then searches FactSet's supply chain database for keywords tied to genomics and immunology products. It scores each company by how many of those links it has, and the 50 highest scorers make the index.
Holdings are weighted by float-adjusted market value. That means bigger companies get bigger weights, counting only shares the public can trade. No single company can exceed 4% at a rebalance, and the diversified biopharmaceutical group is capped at 25%. The index rebuilds its list each December and resets weights twice a year, so positions can drift above the cap in between. As of July 31, 2026, Bayer and Twist Bioscience were each about 4.8% of the fund.
BlackRock uses representative sampling. This means it holds a group of stocks expected to behave like the index, which may not be every index member. At least 80% of assets go into index stocks or close equivalents such as depositary receipts. Up to 20% can go into futures, options, swaps, cash and other securities. The fund may lend out up to one-third of its assets. Portfolio turnover was 49%, according to the prospectus filed November 21, 2025.
What it really costs
- IDNA charges 0.47% a year, versus an average of 0.48% for the similar funds below (5th of 7, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $48 in the first year and $591 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IDNA | $48 | $151 | $263 | $591 |
In a retirement portfolio
IDNA is a narrow, volatile theme fund with a small yield, so it fits as a small add-on rather than a foundation.
IDNA adds focused exposure to genomics and immunology drugmakers in the US, Europe and Japan. Its history shows deep, long losses. In the 2020 COVID crash it fell 26.9% and recovered in about a month. In the 2022 bear market it fell 42.5% and took about 51 months, until September 29, 2026, to win that back. Its deepest drop, 68.3% from September 2021 to October 2023, had still not been fully recovered as of October 27, 2026. Someone forced to sell in 2022 would have locked in large losses. The fund launched in 2019, so it has no 2008 record.
Income is small. The trailing yield was 0.69% as of October 27, 2026, paid twice a year. The fund costs 0.47% a year, which is $48 in the first year and $591 over 10 years in the SEC's $10,000 example. Past results don't predict future returns, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors wanting a global slice of genomics and immunology companies, including Bayer, Genmab and Takeda, with about 40% outside the US as of July 31, 2026.
- Long-term holders who can ride out drops like the 68.3% fall from September 2021 to October 2023 without needing to sell.
- People willing to pay 0.47% a year, close to the 0.48% peer average, for a theme-screened index rather than a plain biotech index.
Look elsewhere if
- Retirees seeking income: the trailing yield was 0.69% as of October 27, 2026, paid only twice a year.
- Cost-focused investors: BBH and XBI charge 0.35% and IBB charges 0.45%, compared with IDNA's 0.47%.
- Anyone wanting a large fund: IDNA held about $191 million as of July 31, 2026, the smallest in its seven-fund comparison group.

Questions investors ask
Is IDNA good for retirement?
IDNA is a high-risk satellite holding, not a core retirement fund. It fell 42.5% in the 2022 bear market and took about 51 months to recover. Its deepest drop, 68.3% from September 2021 to October 2023, had not been fully made up as of October 27, 2026. Its yield was 0.69% as of that date. A small position may suit investors who want exposure to genomics and immunology and won't need to sell during a slump.
What's the difference between IDNA and IBB?
Both are iShares funds, but they overlap by only about 20%. IDNA picks 50 global companies by their genomics and immunology ties, with about 40% of assets outside the US as of July 31, 2026. IBB costs 0.45% a year compared with IDNA's 0.47%, and it is much larger, at about $9.1 billion as of June 30, 2026. Over the year to October 27, 2026, IDNA returned 66.9% and IBB returned 35.3%.
Does IDNA pay dividends?
Yes, but not much. IDNA pays twice a year. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.29 per share, for a trailing yield of 0.69%. The fund holds drug and biotech companies, and many of them reinvest their profits in research instead of paying large dividends. Investors looking for regular income would likely find the payouts too small and too infrequent to count on.
What are IDNA's top holdings?
As of July 31, 2026, the largest holdings were Bayer at 4.8%, Twist Bioscience at 4.8%, Revolution Medicines at 4.6%, Regeneron at 4.4%, Genmab at 4.2%, Incyte at 4.2% and Moderna at 4.2%. Takeda, Merck and Vertex rounded out the top 10, which together made up about 43% of the fund. About 60% of assets were in US companies, followed by Germany, France, Japan, Switzerland and Denmark.
How has IDNA performed since launch?
The record is uneven. According to the prospectus, IDNA returned an average of -4.75% a year over the five years through December 31, 2024. The MSCI All Country World Index returned 10.06% a year over the same period. Since then the fund has bounced back. It gained 17.27% in 2025 and 61.1% in 2026 through October 27. Those gains followed a 42.1% loss in 2022, and they may not last.
