What changed recently

  • Over the three months to Jun 30, 2026, investors withdrew a net $1.7M (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +4.00%, +2.85%, -1.02%.

How it works

CRDT does not track an index. Its aim is to maximize total return. Simplify, the adviser, splits the work with a sub-adviser. The sub-adviser picks the bonds and other income securities using bottom-up research, which means it studies individual issuers. Simplify runs the derivatives and handles trading. The fund can own US and foreign corporate bonds of any quality, preferred stock, Treasuries and bank loans. Up to 15% can go into hard-to-sell assets such as distressed or private investments. No more than 10% can be in debt rated CCC or lower. Up to 25% can be outside the US, with no more than 10% in emerging markets. Portfolio turnover was 108%, so holdings change often.

As of June 30, 2026, the fund held 46 positions: 39% common stocks, 21% bonds and notes, 16% preferred stock and 19% asset-backed securities, including collateralized loan obligations (CLOs). Rithm Capital was the largest holding at 10.7%, followed by Dynex Capital, MFA Financial and Annaly. The 10 largest holdings made up 44% of the fund.

Simplify can use Treasury futures, swaptions (options to enter a swap), credit default swaps and total return swaps to hedge or reshape risk. On June 30, 2026, the fund held 2-year and 5-year Treasury futures, options on SOFR futures and call options on QQQ. With derivatives, there is a risk that the other party fails to pay.

What it really costs

  • CRDT charges 0.97% a year, versus an average of 0.08% for the similar funds below (8th of 8, cheapest first).
  • Of that, 0.95% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $99 in the first year and $1,192 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
CRDT$99$310$538$1,192
SEC standard example: $10,000 invested, 5% annual return, shares sold at the end of each period.

Structure and tax notes

  • Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It offers high monthly income, but it holds a large slice of stocks and junk-rated debt, charges a high fee and has a short record, so it fits better as a small add-on than as a core bond holding.

CRDT could add monthly income to a retirement portfolio, but it carries more risk than a typical bond fund. As of June 30, 2026, about 39% of assets were common stocks. Much of the rest was junk bonds, preferred stock and asset-backed debt. It launched in June 2023, so it has no record through the 2008, 2020 or 2022 downturns. Its weakest full calendar year was 2025, at −0.38%. Its deepest drop was 15.6%, from August 13 to October 14, 2026, and it had not recovered as of October 27, 2026. Anyone selling shares for cash during a drop like that locks in lower prices.

The yield was 7.14% over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, paid monthly. Costs are high. In the SEC's standard $10,000 example, fees come to $99 after one year and $1,192 after 10. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Income seekers who accept junk bonds, preferred stock and dividend stocks in return for a 7.14% yield paid monthly (as of October 27, 2026).
  • Investors who want a manager to pick credits and adjust rate and default risk with Treasury futures and swaps, rather than track an index.
  • Investors who want a small add-on alongside a low-cost core bond fund and who accept a 0.97% expense ratio for active credit picking.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: CRDT charges 0.97% a year, against a 0.08% average for similar bond funds and 0.03% for VCIT.
  • Anyone wanting bond-like steadiness: about 39% was in common stocks as of June 30, 2026, and the fund fell 15.6% from August to October 2026.
  • Investors wanting a long, proven record: it launched in June 2023, held only $36.3 million as of June 30, 2026, and missed the 2008, 2020 and 2022 downturns.

Questions investors ask

Does CRDT pay monthly dividends?

Yes. CRDT pays distributions every month. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $1.47 per share, a yield of 7.14%. The income comes from junk and investment-grade bonds, preferred stock, asset-backed securities and dividend-paying stocks. A high payout doesn't guarantee a gain, though. The fund's one-year return was −6.5% as of the same date.

What does CRDT invest in?

CRDT owns a mix of income-producing assets. As of June 30, 2026, it held 39% common stocks, 21% bonds and notes, 16% preferred stock and 19% asset-backed securities. That last group includes collateralized loan obligations, which are pools of corporate loans divided into slices with different risk levels. Rithm Capital was the largest holding at 10.7%, followed by Dynex Capital at 4.9%, MFA Financial at 4.5% and Annaly at 4.4%. About 81% of assets were in the US.

How has CRDT performed since launch?

It has trailed broad bond benchmarks. From its June 2023 launch through December 31, 2025, CRDT returned 3.87% a year. Over the same period, the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index returned 4.54% a year and the ICE BofA US High Yield Index returned 10.08%. CRDT gained 4.94% in 2024 and lost 0.38% in 2025, a year when the Aggregate index gained 7.3%. Based on market prices, it was down 7.4% for 2026 through October 27.

CRDT vs JAAA: what's the difference?

They differ in strategy, risk and cost. JAAA, from Janus Henderson, was matched to CRDT on average maturity and issuer mix, not on strategy. As its name says, JAAA focuses on AAA-rated CLOs, the highest-rated slices of pooled corporate loans. CRDT mixes junk bonds, preferred stock and common stocks. JAAA charges 0.20% a year, compared with 0.97% for CRDT. JAAA returned 4.8% over one year and 6.1% a year over three years through October 30, 2026. CRDT returned −6.5% and 0.5% through October 27, 2026.

What is CRDT's expense ratio?

CRDT's expense ratio is 0.97% a year, which includes a 0.95% management fee, according to the prospectus filed October 28, 2026. That is far above the 0.08% average for similar bond funds. It ranks 8th of 8 on cost among the funds compared. In the SEC's standard example ($10,000 invested, 5% annual return), total costs are about $99 after one year, $310 after three, $538 after five and $1,192 after ten.
