The short version
BNY Mellon Global Infrastructure Income ETF (BKGI) is an actively managed fund. It holds about 29 dividend-paying infrastructure stocks worldwide, including pipeline, utility and health care property companies. Its manager aims for a portfolio yield of 6% or more before fees, but doesn't guarantee it. It costs 0.55% a year after a fee waiver. That is less than the 0.80% and 0.85% charged by the two midstream income ETFs whose holdings overlap with it most.

How it works
BKGI does not track an index. Its sub-adviser, Newton Investment Management North America (NIMNA), is part of BNY Mellon and picks the stocks. At least 80% of assets go to dividend-paying infrastructure companies. These are firms that get at least half their revenue, profits or assets from things like power lines, pipelines, airports, cell towers, data centers or health care property. NIMNA looks for steady regulation, stable cash flow and consistent dividends. It combines number-based screens with company research and valuation measures such as price-to-earnings.
The manager targets a combined forward-looking 12-month yield of 6% or more for the portfolio. That figure comes before fees and is based on analysts' dividend forecasts. If the portfolio's yield falls below the target, NIMNA may sell holdings and buy others. The target is not a promise of payouts. The fund's trailing 12-month yield was 3.06% as of October 27, 2026.
Normally at least 40% of assets are outside the US (never less than 30%), spread across at least three countries, with up to 25% allowed in emerging markets. Foreign currencies are not hedged, so moves in the dollar affect returns. As of July 31, 2026, the top 10 holdings made up 56% of the fund. The largest were Hess Midstream (7.9%), Enbridge (7.6%), Naturgy (7.2%), Omega Healthcare Investors (6.9%) and Healthpeak Properties (6.8%). Portfolio turnover was 40%.
What it really costs
- BKGI charges 0.55% a year, versus an average of 0.82% for the similar funds below (1st of 3, cheapest first).
- Of that, 0.65% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
- The fee includes a 0.1% waiver from the adviser, which may end.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $56 in the first year and $801 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BKGI | $56 | $198 | $352 | $801 |
In a retirement portfolio
It is built around dividend-paying infrastructure stocks and pays quarterly, though its trailing yield of 3.06% is moderate rather than high.
BKGI could add quarterly income from global infrastructure stocks. Its trailing 12-month yield was 3.06%, or $1.29 per share, as of October 27, 2026. It costs 0.55% a year. In the SEC's standard example, that comes to $801 over 10 years on $10,000. Beta measures how closely a fund moves with the stock market. BKGI's beta was 0.24 for the year to October 27, 2026, which is low.
Its track record is short. The fund launched in November 2022, after the 2008, 2020 and 2022 market crashes. Its weakest calendar year, 2023, still gained 9.31%. Its deepest drop was 14.8%, from May to October 2023, and it regained that peak by March 2024. A true bear market could hurt more, which matters if you have to sell shares in a bad year. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors wanting quarterly dividends from global pipelines, utilities and health care REITs, with more than half the fund outside the US as of July 31, 2026.
- Those wanting an actively managed infrastructure fund at 0.55% a year, below the 0.80%–0.85% charged by the midstream income ETFs it most overlaps.
- Holders who want a fund that moves less with the stock market; its beta was 0.24 for the year to October 27, 2026.
Look elsewhere if
- Anyone wanting broad, index-based infrastructure exposure; BKGI held only 29 stocks, with 56% in the top 10, as of July 31, 2026.
- Investors who want a long track record; the fund launched in November 2022 and has not been through a major bear market.
- Those expecting a 6% payout; the 6% target is a portfolio yield before fees, and trailing distributions were 3.06% as of October 27, 2026.

Is BKGI good for retirement income?
It may suit retirees who want quarterly income from global infrastructure stocks, but its payout has been lower than the fund's 6%-plus yield target suggests. That target is the dividend yield its holdings are expected to deliver over the next 12 months, before fees, expenses and taxes, and it is not guaranteed. Shareholders received $1.29 per share in the 12 months to October 27, 2026, equal to 3.06% of the share price. Currency moves also affect returns, because the fund generally does not hedge them.
What does BKGI invest in?
BKGI, a BNY Mellon ETF, holds dividend-paying infrastructure companies around the world, chosen by a manager rather than copied from an index. The stock picker is Newton Investment Management North America, an affiliate of the fund's adviser. As of July 31, 2026, the fund had 29 holdings, and the top 10 made up about 56% of assets. The largest were Hess Midstream (7.9%), Enbridge (7.6%), Naturgy Energy Group (7.2%), Omega Healthcare Investors (6.9%) and Healthpeak Properties (6.8%). About 43% sat in US companies, with France and Spain next.
How has BKGI performed since launch?
From its November 2, 2022 launch through December 31, 2025, BKGI beat a global infrastructure index, though that is a short record. The prospectus shows 37.73% for 2025 and an average of 20.99% a year since inception, versus 14.8% for the S&P Global Infrastructure NR Index and 21.35% for the MSCI ACWI, a broad global stock index. Based on market prices, it returned 9.1% over the year to October 27, 2026. Its largest fall was 14.8%, between May and October 2023, and it recovered by March 2024.
What is BKGI's expense ratio?
BKGI's expense ratio, the yearly fee taken from fund assets, is 0.55%, according to the prospectus filed February 27, 2026. That reflects a 0.65% management fee minus a 0.10% fee waiver, and waivers can end. Under the SEC's standard example, a $10,000 investment earning 5% a year would cost about $56 in the first year and $801 over 10 years. The two midstream ETFs whose holdings overlap most with BKGI, MDST and UMI, charge 0.80% and 0.85%.
What's the difference between BKGI and MDST?
The main difference is focus. MDST, the Westwood Salient Enhanced Midstream Income ETF, centers on midstream energy (pipelines and storage), as its name suggests, while BKGI can invest across utilities, energy, industrials, real estate, health care and communications companies worldwide. Even as the closest match by holdings, MDST shares only about 17% with BKGI. BKGI is cheaper (0.55% vs. 0.80%) and larger ($1.31 billion vs. $287 million as of July 31, 2026). MDST returned more over the year to October 27, 2026: 25.7% vs. 9.1%.
