The short version
The BondBloxx BBB Rated 5-10 Year Corporate Bond ETF (BBBI) tracks the Bloomberg US Corporate BBB 5-10 Year Index. That index holds corporate bonds rated BBB, the lowest tier of investment grade, that mature in five to ten years. Two things set it apart. It sticks to that one rating tier, and it costs 0.19% a year, compared with 0.03% to 0.04% for much larger rivals such as VCIT, IGIB and SCHI.

How it works
BondBloxx's BBBI aims to match the Bloomberg US Corporate BBB 5-10 Year Index before fees. The index holds fixed-rate, taxable, US dollar bonds from US and foreign companies with at least $500 million outstanding and five to just under ten years to maturity. All are rated BBB+, BBB or BBB-, the lowest investment-grade tier, just above riskier "junk" bonds. Bigger issues get bigger weights; the index rebalances monthly.
The index had about 1,016 bonds as of December 31, 2025. The fund doesn't have to own them all. It uses representative sampling, picking a subset that mirrors the index's duration (sensitivity to interest rates), credit quality, yield and sector mix. As of July 31, 2026, it held 1,002 positions; the top 10 were only 4.56% of assets. The largest were two privately issued SpaceX bonds, followed by Oracle.
At least 80% of net assets must be in these bonds. Up to 20% may go to Treasuries, cash, other ETFs, futures, options or swaps; it held no derivatives as of July 31, 2026. The fund is "non-diversified," so it can put more in one issuer, and it mirrors the index's industry concentration; financial companies made up a significant share as of December 31, 2025. Being passive, it won't retreat to safer holdings in downturns.
What it really costs
- BBBI charges 0.19% a year, versus an average of 0.07% for the similar funds below (7th of 8, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $19 in the first year and $243 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BBBI | $19 | $61 | $107 | $243 |
Structure and tax notes
- Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.
In a retirement portfolio
It pays monthly income from a broad basket of BBB-rated corporate bonds, with a trailing 12-month yield of 5.05% as of October 27, 2026.
BBBI could add monthly income to a portfolio. Its track record is short, though. It launched on January 25, 2024, so it has no record from the 2008, 2020 or 2022 downturns. Its only full calendar year, 2025, returned 9.43%. Its weakest quarter was a 2.43% loss at the end of 2024. Its deepest drop was 4.8%, from February 27 to October 2, 2026, and it had not recovered as of October 27, 2026. Anyone drawing on it during a stretch like that might have to cash out shares at a loss. BBB bonds also face a higher risk of being downgraded to junk in a downturn, and this fund hasn't been through one yet. Its 0.19% fee is above the 0.07% average of similar funds. Past results don't predict future ones, and a retirement plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want only BBB-rated corporate bonds maturing in five to ten years, rather than a blend of all investment-grade ratings.
- Income seekers who want monthly payouts. The trailing 12-month yield was 5.05% as of October 27, 2026.
- Those who want wide spread: 1,002 positions, with the 10 largest totaling just 4.56% of assets as of July 31, 2026.
Look elsewhere if
- Cost-focused investors. The 0.19% fee is several times the 0.03% to 0.04% charged by VCIT, IGIB and SCHI.
- Anyone wanting a long record or a large fund. It launched in January 2024 and had $169.5 million in net assets as of July 31, 2026.
- Those uneasy about downgrade risk. BBB is the lowest investment-grade tier, and financial companies make up a significant share of the index.

Questions investors ask
Does BBBI pay monthly dividends?
Yes. BBBI pays income monthly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $2.49 per share, a trailing yield of 5.05%. The money comes from interest on the corporate bonds it holds, which had an average coupon (the bond's stated interest rate) of 5.24% as of July 31, 2026. Payments can rise or fall from month to month as the fund's holdings and interest rates change.
What's the difference between BBBI and VCIT?
BBBI is narrower, smaller and costs more. VCIT is the closest match by maturity and issuer mix. Both hold intermediate-term corporate bonds, with average maturities of 8.6 years for BBBI and 8.2 years for VCIT. BBBI holds only BBB-rated bonds. It charges 0.19% a year against VCIT's 0.03%. BBBI had $169.5 million in assets as of July 31, 2026, while VCIT had about $72 billion as of August 31, 2026. Over one year, BBBI returned -1.7% (to October 27, 2026) and VCIT -0.6% (to October 30, 2026).
Is BBBI a safe investment?
No bond fund is risk-free, and BBBI carries more credit risk than many. BBB is the lowest rung of investment grade, and these bonds are more likely to be cut to junk status in a downturn. Bond prices also fall when interest rates rise. The fund's deepest drop was 4.8%, from February 27 to October 2, 2026. It is also non-diversified, and financial companies make up a significant share of its index.
How much does BBBI cost per year?
BBBI charges 0.19% a year, according to its prospectus filed February 27, 2026. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return would pay about $19 in costs after one year, $61 after three, $107 after five and $243 after ten, assuming shares are cashed out at the end of each period. Similar funds averaged 0.07%, and BBBI ranked 7th of 8 on cost.
How has BBBI performed since launch?
BBBI did well in 2025 but lost ground in 2026. It returned 9.43% in 2025, just behind its index's 9.64%, and averaged 7.3% a year from its January 2024 launch through December 31, 2025. The broad Bloomberg US Aggregate Bond Index averaged 5.12% over that period. Over the year to October 27, 2026, the fund's price-based return was -1.7%, which ranked 7th of 8 among similar funds.
