How it works
AZTD tracks the Solactive Aztlan Global Developed Markets SMID Cap Index. Aztlan Equity Management designed the index rules, and Solactive AG owns and calculates the index. "SMID" means small and mid-sized companies, here those worth between $500 million and $15 billion. Eligible stocks come from the US, Canada, 15 Western European countries, Australia, Japan and New Zealand. Hong Kong and Singapore are excluded. Each stock must trade at least $5 million a day on average. Ten sectors are allowed, but pharmaceutical companies are left out of health care.
Each September 30, the index scores this universe over the past 12 months on six equally weighted factors: value (earnings compared with share price), cash flow (dividends and free cash flow yield), return on equity, earnings growth, changes in analysts' earnings estimates, and price momentum. The 70 top scorers make a shortlist. Each quarter, the index re-ranks that shortlist and the top 50 go in at equal weights. Weights then drift with prices until the next rebalance.
The fund generally buys every stock in the index but may hold a representative sample. Because holdings change often, turnover was 316%. That raises trading costs and can produce taxable gains. As of July 31, 2026, the fund held 49 issuers, used no derivatives and kept 0.83% in cash.
What it really costs
- AZTD charges 0.75% a year.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $77 in the first year and $930 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AZTD | $77 | $240 | $417 | $930 |
In a retirement portfolio
It is a concentrated, high-turnover basket of about 50 smaller companies with a short track record, so it fits as a small add-on rather than a foundation.
AZTD could add smaller developed-market companies to a portfolio, with about half its assets outside the US as of July 31, 2026. Its record is short. It launched on August 17, 2022, so it has no history through the 2008 crisis, the 2020 COVID crash or the 2022 bear market. Its weakest calendar year was 2024, with a 6.95% gain according to the prospectus. Its deepest drop was 16.8%, from December 4, 2024, to April 8, 2025, and it was back at its old high by May 12, 2025. That is a mild test. Small-company stocks have historically fallen much further in severe crises, so someone forced to sell in a bad year could face a bigger loss. Income is small: the yield was 0.95% as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested costs $77 in fees in the first year. Past results don't predict future returns, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors wanting a rules-based, equal-weighted basket of about 50 developed-market small and mid-sized stocks, with roughly half outside the US.
- People adding a small satellite position that leans toward value, cash flow, earnings growth and momentum, who accept a 0.75% expense ratio.
- Holders comfortable with sizable Japan exposure, about 19% as of July 31, 2026, including names like Cybozu and Happinet.
Look elsewhere if
- Investors needing steady income: the yield was 0.95% as of October 27, 2026, paid only once a year.
- Taxable investors wary of capital gains distributions, since the prospectus reports portfolio turnover of 316%.
- Those wanting a long record or a large fund: AZTD launched in August 2022 and had about $37.9 million in net assets as of July 31, 2026.

Questions investors ask
What does AZTD invest in?
AZTD holds about 50 small and mid-sized companies from developed markets, chosen and equally weighted by the Solactive Aztlan Global Developed Markets SMID Cap Index. As of July 31, 2026, the largest positions were DaVita (3.1%), Enova International (3.0%), Medpace (2.9%), Cybozu (2.5%) and Happinet (2.5%). The top 10 made up about 26% of assets. By country, the mix was about 48% US, 19% Japan, 9% Canada and 5% Germany.
What is the AZTD expense ratio?
AZTD's expense ratio is 0.75% a year, according to its November 24, 2025, prospectus. All of it is the management fee, and there is no fee waiver. In the SEC's standard example ($10,000 invested, 5% annual return), total costs come to $77 after one year, $240 after three, $417 after five and $930 after ten. Trading costs from the fund's 316% turnover are not included in the expense ratio.
Does AZTD pay dividends?
Yes, but only once a year, and the payout is small. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, the fund paid about $0.30 per share, a yield of 0.95%. That makes sense given the index: it screens stocks on value, growth, momentum and other factors, not on high dividends. Investors looking for regular income would get little from this fund on its own.
How has AZTD performed since launch?
According to the prospectus, AZTD returned 11.14% in 2023 and 6.95% in 2024, for an average of 6.91% a year from its August 2022 launch through December 31, 2024. Market-price returns were stronger afterward: 25.46% in 2025 and 11.3% for 2026 through October 27. Over the three years to October 27, 2026, it returned about 20.4% a year. That record is short and covers no major bear market.
Is AZTD a risky ETF?
It carries more risk than a broad index fund. It owns only about 50 stocks, all small or mid-sized, and about half are outside the US. Over three years to October 27, 2026, its volatility was 17.8%, and its one-year beta was 1.09, meaning it moved slightly more than the market. Its deepest drop was 16.8%, in late 2024 and early 2025. With about $37.9 million in assets, its shares may also trade with wider bid-ask spreads.
