How it works
AVEE, from American Century Investments, is actively managed: it does not copy an index. Its managers use financial data to pick small companies tied to emerging markets, meaning countries outside the developed world. At least 80% of assets go to these stocks under normal conditions. "Small" means no bigger than the largest company in the benchmark MSCI Emerging Markets Small Cap Index, about $9.3 billion as of September 30, 2025.
Each stock's starting weight reflects its market value. The managers then tilt toward smaller, cheaper and more profitable firms. Cheap means a high ratio of book value (assets minus liabilities) to price; profitable means strong operating cash flow relative to book value. Larger, pricier, less profitable stocks are trimmed or left out. That yields 2,877 holdings as of August 31, 2026; the top 10, led by LG Innotek at 0.71%, totaled only 4.52% of assets.
There is no fixed rebalancing date. The managers review holdings continually and trade as stocks drift from the target profile, weighing costs and taxes. Portfolio turnover, the share of holdings replaced over a year, was 3% per the December 29, 2025 prospectus. One drawback: the fund may create and redeem shares for cash rather than securities, which can trigger taxable gains that ETFs swapping securities directly often avoid.
What it really costs
- AVEE charges 0.42% a year, versus an average of 0.69% for the similar funds below (1st of 5, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $43 in the first year and $530 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AVEE | $43 | $135 | $236 | $530 |
In a retirement portfolio
It is a narrow, volatile slice of the market (small emerging markets companies) with a short track record, so it fits better as a small add-on than as a foundation.
AVEE could add something most US-focused portfolios lack: small companies in Taiwan, South Korea, India and China. Its history is short. It launched in November 2023, so it missed the 2008, 2020 and 2022 downturns. Its deepest drop was 20.2%, from October 2, 2024 to April 8, 2025. It regained that ground by June 9, 2025, about two months later. Its weakest calendar year, 2024, still ended up 2.9%, but its worst quarter was a 7.56% loss at the end of 2024. Anyone who had to sell near the April 2025 low would have locked in a loss of about a fifth. The trailing yield was 3.14% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly, though dividends from small foreign companies can vary. Costs are low: $43 in the first year on $10,000 under the SEC's standard example. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want low-cost exposure to small emerging markets companies: 0.42% a year, versus 0.58% to 0.80% for four similar ETFs.
- People who want broad diversification: about 2,900 stocks, and no single holding above 0.71% as of August 31, 2026.
- Investors comfortable with a tilt toward cheaper, more profitable companies, who accept it may lag plain market-weighted funds when that style is out of favor.
Look elsewhere if
- Anyone who wants a long track record. AVEE launched in November 2023 and has not been tested by a bear market like 2008 or 2022.
- Investors uneasy about concentration in Asia. Taiwan (28%) and South Korea (18%) were its two largest markets as of August 31, 2026.
- Those who need smooth returns or steady income. Three-year volatility was 17.2%, and dividends from small foreign companies can swing from year to year.

Questions investors ask
Is AVEE an index fund?
No. AVEE is an actively managed ETF that does not try to copy an index. It measures itself against the MSCI Emerging Markets Small Cap Index and mostly invests in that index's countries. Its managers start from each stock's market value. They then give more weight to smaller, cheaper and more profitable companies, and less weight to larger, pricier and less profitable ones. Turnover is low at 3%, so the approach is rules-based and steady rather than active stock-picking.
What's the difference between AVEE and EEMS?
Of the similar funds compared here, the iShares MSCI Emerging Markets Small-Cap ETF (EEMS) shares the most holdings with AVEE. EEMS costs 0.73% a year, compared with 0.42% for AVEE. EEMS is also larger, with about $376 million in net assets versus about $125 million for AVEE as of August 31, 2026. AVEE adds tilts toward cheaper, more profitable companies. Over the year to October 27, 2026, EEMS returned 5.9% and AVEE returned 2.8%.
Does AVEE pay dividends?
Yes. AVEE pays dividends quarterly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid $2.029 per share, a trailing yield of 3.14%. The payouts come from the dividends of the small emerging markets companies it owns. Those can change with company profits, local tax rules and currency moves, so the amount per quarter may vary. The fund's stated goal is long-term growth, not income.
How has AVEE performed since launch?
Its results have been mixed against its benchmark. Through December 31, 2024, AVEE returned 3.18% in 2024 and 8.09% a year since its November 2023 launch, according to its prospectus. The MSCI Emerging Markets Small Cap Index returned 4.79% and 11.98% over the same periods. Based on price, the fund gained 19.8% in 2025 and 4.9% in 2026 through October 27. Over the year ending that date, it gained 2.8%.
How risky is AVEE?
AVEE is riskier than a broad US stock fund. It owns small companies in emerging markets, which can face political shocks, currency swings and thin trading. Its deepest drop was 20.2%, from October 2024 to April 2025, and it recovered by June 2025. Annualized volatility was 17.2% over three years and 19.5% over one year, as of October 27, 2026. Its short history means it has not yet faced a severe, long bear market.
