How it works

ARKQ does not track an index. ARK Invest's managers pick the stocks. They put at least 80% of assets in US and foreign companies they think will gain from "disruptive innovation" in automation and manufacturing, transportation, energy, artificial intelligence and materials. They start "top down," estimating how large a market could grow and who could benefit most. Then they work "bottom up," checking each company's valuation and fundamentals. They weigh environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors, but they don't use them to exclude any company or sector.

The fund is "non-diversified." That means it can put a large share of its money into a few companies. More than 25% of assets sit in the industrials or information technology sectors. It can own companies of any size, including some in emerging markets, and American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), which are US-traded shares that stand for foreign stocks. As of July 31, 2026, it held 40 stocks, and its top 10 made up 54% of assets. The largest were Tesla (9.8%), Teradyne (6.6%), Advanced Micro Devices (6.2%), Space Exploration Technologies (5.9%) and Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (5.8%). Stocks were 99.6% of assets, US companies were 86%, and the fund held no derivatives.

The prospectus gives no index rules or set rebalancing schedule. Position sizes reflect how strongly the managers believe in each idea. Portfolio turnover, the share of holdings replaced over a year, was 27%.

What it really costs

  • ARKQ charges 0.75% a year, versus an average of 0.72% for the similar funds below (3rd of 7, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $77 in the first year and $930 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

ARKQ is a concentrated, actively managed bet on robotics, autonomous technology and AI that has fallen far more than the broad market in downturns.

ARKQ could add concentrated exposure to robotics, autonomous vehicles, defense technology and AI chipmakers. The price is volatility. The fund launched in 2014, so it has no record from the 2008 crisis. In the 2020 COVID crash it fell 36.7% but recovered in about two months. In the 2022 bear market it fell 45.7% and took about 26 months to get back. Its deepest drop, also called a drawdown, was 59.9%, from February 2021 to December 2022, and it didn't fully recover until July 2025. Anyone forced to sell shares during a stretch like that would lock in steep losses. Income is minimal: the trailing yield was 0.27% as of October 27, 2026, paid once a year. Expenses are 0.75% a year, or $77 in the first year on $10,000 under the SEC's standard example. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors wanting an actively managed bet on robotics, autonomous technology and AI, led by Tesla, Teradyne and AMD as of July 31, 2026.
  • Long-horizon investors who can sit through drops like the 59.9% fall from 2021 to 2022, which took about 31 months to recover.
  • Investors keeping a small satellite slice beside a broad core fund, and accepting a 0.75% fee near the 0.72% peer average.

Look elsewhere if

  • Retirees who need income: the trailing yield was 0.27% as of October 27, 2026, paid only once a year.
  • Anyone who may need to sell in a downturn: it lost 46.7% in 2022, and its one-year beta was 2.25, about 2.25 times the market's moves.
  • Investors who want broad, rules-based index diversification: ARKQ is non-diversified, with 54% of assets in its top 10 of 40 holdings.

Questions investors ask

Is ARKQ good for retirement?

ARKQ is a high-risk fund that may fit only a small slice of a retirement portfolio. It lost 46.7% in 2022. Its deepest drop, 59.9% from February 2021 to December 2022, didn't fully recover until July 2025. It pays very little income, with a trailing yield of 0.27% as of October 27, 2026. Over long periods its record has been strong: a 15.44% average annual return over the 10 years through December 31, 2024.

What's the difference between ARKQ and ARKX?

Both are actively managed ARK Invest funds that charge 0.75% a year, and their holdings overlapped by 67% in their latest N-PORT reports. ARKX focuses on space exploration and innovation. ARKQ casts a wider net across robotics, autonomous technology, energy and AI. ARKQ is larger, at $1.86 billion in net assets versus $759 million for ARKX as of July 31, 2026. As of October 27, 2026, ARKQ returned -3.5% over one year versus -0.7% for ARKX, and 35.9% versus 34.5% a year over three years.

What are ARKQ's top holdings?

As of July 31, 2026, ARKQ's largest holdings were Tesla (9.8%), Teradyne (6.6%), Advanced Micro Devices (6.2%), Space Exploration Technologies (5.9%), Kratos Defense & Security Solutions (5.8%) and Alphabet (5.2%). Amazon, Palantir, Taiwan Semiconductor and Rocket Lab completed the top 10. The fund held 40 stocks, and its top 10 made up 54% of assets. US companies made up 86% of the portfolio, and Taiwan was the next largest country at 3.6%.

Does ARKQ pay a dividend?

Yes, but not much, and only once a year. Over the trailing 12 months through October 27, 2026, ARKQ paid $0.31 per share, a yield of 0.27%. That is expected for a fund built for long-term growth. Many of its holdings, such as Tesla and Rocket Lab, put their cash back into the business instead of paying large dividends. Investors looking for steady income will find little here.

What is ARKQ's expense ratio?

ARKQ's expense ratio is 0.75% a year, according to its prospectus filed November 26, 2025. Under the SEC's standard example ($10,000 invested, 5% annual return), that comes to about $77 after one year, $417 after five years and $930 after ten. The average for similar funds is 0.72%. ARK Innovation ETF also charges 0.75%, ARK Next Generation Internet ETF charges 0.82%, and SoFi Social 50 ETF charges 0.29%.
