How it works
AQWA is an index fund. It aims to match the Solactive Global Clean Water Industry Index before fees, and it does not move to cash when markets fall. Solactive AG is an independent firm. It uses a natural language processing algorithm, which is software that reads filings, earnings-call transcripts and other public documents, to rank companies tied to clean water. It then checks that the top-ranked firms earn at least 50% of their revenue from water treatment and recycling, water storage and distribution, water purifiers and heaters, or water-efficiency consulting.
Companies also need a market value of at least $200 million and average daily trading of at least $2 million over six months (as of January 31, 2026). Each quarter, Solactive and data firm Minerva remove any company that breaches the UN Global Compact's standards on labor, human rights, the environment and corruption. Weights follow each company's stock market value, with caps applied at each twice-yearly review: 8% for any one stock, 40% combined for stocks at 4.5% or more, 4.5% for the rest, and a 0.3% minimum. Weights drift between reviews. American Water Works was 8.2% on May 31, 2026.
Global X Management Company, the adviser, generally holds each index stock in about the same proportions as the index. It sometimes does this through depositary receipts, which are certificates representing foreign shares. The May 31, 2026 holdings report showed no derivatives, and annual turnover was a modest 17%.
What it really costs
- AQWA charges 0.5% a year, versus an average of 0.54% for the similar funds below (4th of 8, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $51 in the first year and $628 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AQWA | $51 | $160 | $280 | $628 |
In a retirement portfolio
It is a narrow 40-stock fund built around a single theme, water, so it would typically sit as a small slice beside broader holdings.
AQWA adds a concentrated bet on water-related stocks. It launched in April 2021, so it has no record in the 2008 or 2020 crashes. It lost 19.62% in 2022, its worst calendar year, including a 13.41% drop in the second quarter. Its price history starts in October 2022, after that market slump. Since then, its deepest fall was 14.6%, from July to October 2023, and it had recovered by December 13, 2023. Selling shares for income after a year like 2022 would have locked in a sizable loss.
Income is modest: a 1.61% yield over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, paid twice a year. The 0.50% expense ratio is under the 0.54% average for similar funds. In the SEC's standard example on $10,000, that costs $51 in year one and $628 over 10 years. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors wanting a targeted water theme that mixes utilities such as American Water Works and Severn Trent with industrial firms such as Xylem and Pentair.
- Cost-conscious investors: the 0.50% expense ratio is below the 0.59% charged by larger rivals CGW and PHO, though TBLU charges 0.40%.
- Investors who want an ethics filter: each quarter the index drops companies breaching UN Global Compact labor, human rights, environmental and anti-corruption standards.
Look elsewhere if
- Those who prefer larger funds: AQWA held $23.8 million on May 31, 2026, versus $1.05 billion for CGW and $1.86 billion for FIW.
- Income seekers: the yield was 1.61% as of October 27, 2026, paid in just two installments a year.
- Investors who weigh track record: AQWA ranked last among similar water funds over one and three years through October 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask
What does AQWA invest in?
AQWA owns stocks of companies tied to clean water and follows the Solactive Global Clean Water Industry Index. As of May 31, 2026, it held 40 stocks. The largest were American Water Works (8.2%), Ferguson (7.7%), Xylem (7.6%), United Utilities (6.5%) and Pentair (6.2%), and the top 10 made up 58% of assets. US companies were 72% of the fund and UK companies 11%, with smaller stakes in Japan, China, Hong Kong and South Korea. Because of those foreign holdings, currency swings also affect returns.
What's the difference between AQWA and CGW?
AQWA is cheaper than Invesco S&P Global Water Index ETF (CGW) but much smaller, and its returns have been lower, even though about 59% of their holdings overlap. AQWA charges 0.50% a year and CGW charges 0.59%. CGW had $1.05 billion in net assets as of July 31, 2026, against AQWA's $23.8 million as of May 31, 2026. Through October 27, 2026, CGW returned -1.3% over one year and 14.8% a year over three years. AQWA returned -5.3% and 12.3% a year over the same periods.
Does AQWA pay dividends?
Yes, AQWA pays dividends twice a year, but the income is modest. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.30 a share, a yield of 1.61%. Yield here means a year of payouts divided by the share price. The index picks and weights stocks by their link to water and their market value, not by their dividends. The fund's 0.50% annual expense ratio is also paid before income reaches shareholders.
How has AQWA performed since launch?
According to its prospectus, AQWA returned an average of 6.46% a year from its April 2021 launch through December 31, 2025. Calendar-year results were -19.62% in 2022, 19.85% in 2023, 4.69% in 2024 and 13.26% in 2025. Its strongest quarter was the fourth quarter of 2023, with a 16.17% gain. Through October 27, 2026, its price return was -5.3% over one year and 12.3% a year over three years. That ranked last among similar water funds in both periods.
How big is the AQWA ETF?
AQWA is small. It had $23.8 million in net assets as of May 31, 2026, sixth of eight among similar water funds. By comparison, FIW held $1.86 billion and PHO $2.0 billion in mid-2026 reports. Investors also pulled a net $13.9 million out of AQWA over the three months covered by its May report. Fund sponsors sometimes close small funds. Shareholders are then paid out in cash, which can create a taxable gain in a regular brokerage account.
