The short version

Innovator U.S. Equity Accelerated Plus ETF - January (XTJA) uses options on the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) to try to deliver three times SPY's calendar-year gains, up to a cap (15.36% before fees for its 2026 period), while taking about the same losses. Unlike most defined-outcome funds, it has no buffer against losses. It is built to boost modest gains, not to soften declines. Its 0.79% fee is below the 0.86% average of comparable buffer funds.

How it works

XTJA invests through FLEX options, which are exchange-traded options with customized terms, on the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY). SPY tracks the S&P 500 Index. As of July 31, 2026, the fund held three options plus 0.38% cash. The biggest was a deep-in-the-money call, a right to purchase SPY at a very low price. It was worth 99.63% of net assets and moves almost one-for-one with SPY. A purchased call (23.09%) and a call sold at a higher strike price (-23.03%) add the extra upside and set the cap.

Each outcome period runs from January 1 to December 31. For the 2026 period, the fund aims for three times any rise in SPY's price. That gain is capped at 15.36% before fees, or 14.57% after the 0.79% fee. A 5% gain in SPY would give 15% before fees, and bigger gains stop at the cap. There is no buffer: if SPY falls, the fund aims to fall about as much. Unlike leveraged funds that reset daily, the tripling applies only to the gain over the full period.

At the end of each period, the options settle in cash. The fund replaces them with new ones that expire about a year later and sets a new cap, so the cap changes from year to year. The stated outcomes apply only to shares held for the whole period. They are measured on net asset value (NAV), not market price. Innovator posts updated outcome figures daily at innovatoretfs.com/xtja.

What it really costs

  • XTJA charges 0.79% a year, versus an average of 0.86% for the similar funds below (1st of 8, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $81 in the first year and $978 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
XTJA$81$252$439$978
SEC standard example: $10,000 invested, 5% annual return, shares sold at the end of each period.

Structure and tax notes

  • Uses options to limit losses within a range (the buffer) in exchange for a cap on gains over each outcome period; results depend on when you buy relative to the period start.

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It carries roughly the full downside of SPY, limits the upside and pays no income, so it fits as a small add-on rather than a core or defensive holding.

XTJA could serve as a small S&P 500 position that aims to beat SPY's price gain in years when the market rises modestly. In return, it gives up any gains above the cap. It isn't defensive. The fund launched in January 2022, so it missed the 2008 and 2020 crashes. Its worst calendar year was 2022, with a loss of 20.13%. Its deepest drop was 26.1%, from January 4 to October 12, 2022. It got back to its earlier high on February 2, 2024, about 15.7 months after that low. Cashing out during that stretch meant locking in losses, and exiting before a period ends gives up the stated outcomes.

No distributions were recorded for the fund, so it offers no income. Its annual expense ratio is 0.79%. The SEC's standard example assumes $10,000 invested with 5% yearly returns, and puts costs at $81 after one year and $978 after ten. Past results don't predict future returns, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who expect modest S&P 500 gains and want them tripled, up to the 15.36% pre-fee cap for the 2026 outcome period.
  • Investors able to invest at the start of an outcome period and hold through December 31, the only way to get the stated outcomes.
  • Cost-conscious defined-outcome investors: XTJA's 0.79% expense ratio matches Innovator's PJAN and is below the 0.86% average of comparable buffer funds.

Look elsewhere if

  • Retirees wanting protection from losses: XTJA has no buffer and lost 20.13% in 2022, with a 26.1% peak-to-trough drop.
  • Investors who want all of the market's gains in strong years: returns stop at the cap, 14.57% after fees for the 2026 period.
  • Those who need regular income or may need to cash out mid-year: no distributions were recorded, and outcomes apply only to full-period holders.

Questions investors ask

Is XTJA a leveraged ETF?

Not in the usual sense, because it doesn't reset its exposure daily the way leveraged ETFs do. It uses FLEX options on the SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) to try to deliver three times SPY's gain over a full January-to-December outcome period. For the 2026 period, that gain is capped at 15.36% before fees, or 14.57% after fees. Losses aren't tripled: if SPY falls, the fund aims to lose about the same amount. Only investors who hold for the whole period get these outcomes.

Does XTJA protect against losses?

No. Unlike most defined-outcome ETFs, including Innovator's buffer funds, XTJA has no buffer. If SPY's share price falls over the outcome period, the fund aims to fall by about the same percentage, before fees. It lost 20.13% in 2022, and its worst quarter was a loss of 18.31%, ending June 30, 2022. Its deepest drop was 26.1%, from January 4 to October 12, 2022, and it had recovered by February 2, 2024.

What's the difference between XTJA and PJAN?

The main difference is loss protection. PJAN, Innovator's U.S. Equity Power Buffer ETF - January, uses a buffer to absorb some losses in return for capped gains. XTJA has no buffer and instead triples gains up to its cap. Both charge 0.79%. As of October 27, 2026, XTJA returned 14.0% over one year and 16.4% a year over three years, compared with 10.5% and 14.8% for PJAN. PJAN is far larger, with $1.44 billion in net assets against XTJA's $20.6 million as of July 31, 2026.

Can I invest in XTJA in the middle of the year?

Yes, shares trade throughout the year, but the stated outcomes apply only to investors who hold from the start of the outcome period to December 31. Someone who invests mid-year gets whatever upside is left before the cap and is still exposed to losses. By price, the fund was up 12.24% for 2026 through October 27, against an after-fee cap of 14.57%, so most of that period's capped gain had already been used up. Innovator updates the figures daily at innovatoretfs.com/xtja.

Is XTJA good for retirement income?

It isn't built for income. No distributions were recorded for the fund. As of July 31, 2026, it held FLEX options on SPY plus a little cash rather than stocks, and option holders don't collect the dividends paid on the underlying shares. Raising cash means exiting shares, and doing that before the outcome period ends can produce results very different from the stated outcomes. Its 0.79% expense ratio is below the 0.86% average of comparable buffer funds.
