The short version
Innovator Equity Defined Protection ETF - 2 Yr to April 2027 (TAPR) uses FLEX options on the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY) to target a pre-set range of results from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2027. Investors who hold for that whole period seek protection against 100% of SPY's losses before fees, in exchange for a cap on gains: 15.32% before fees, or 13.74% after its 0.79% fee.

How it works
TAPR has no index of its own. Innovator Capital Management (the adviser) and Milliman Financial Risk Management (the sub-adviser) use FLEX options on the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (SPY), which tracks the S&P 500. FLEX options are exchange-listed options with custom terms. As of July 31, 2026, the fund had three option positions. A call with a $10.07 strike price (119.7% of net assets) moves nearly in step with SPY. A put at $559.39 (1.0%) pays off below that price and sets the floor. A call the fund issued at $645.09 (-21.1%) gives away gains above the cap.
Before fees, the fund seeks to match SPY's gains up to a 15.32% cap and absorb 100% of its losses (the buffer) from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2027. After the 0.79% management fee, the cap is 13.74% and the buffer is 98.42%. Results are based on net asset value (NAV, the holdings' per-share value). They apply only to those who hold for the whole period. Entering or leaving midway, or trading at a market price away from NAV, can produce very different results.
When the period ends, the fund takes the cash value of its options and invests in a new set expiring about two years later. That starts a new outcome period with a new cap.
What it really costs
- TAPR charges 0.79% a year, versus an average of 0.86% for the similar funds below (1st of 8, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $81 in the first year and $978 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| TAPR | $81 | $252 | $439 | $978 |
Structure and tax notes
- Uses options to limit losses within a range (the buffer) in exchange for a cap on gains over each outcome period; results depend on when you buy relative to the period start.
- Bond prices move opposite to interest rates; the longer the maturities it holds, the more its price reacts to rate changes.
In a retirement portfolio
Its options aim to absorb 100% of S&P 500 ETF losses before fees over the outcome period, in exchange for capping gains at 15.32% before fees.
For investors who hold the full period, TAPR could add S&P 500 exposure with losses largely absorbed through March 31, 2027. It launched March 31, 2025, so it did not exist during the 2008, 2020 or 2022 downturns. It also has no full calendar year on record. Its deepest drop was 2.6%, from April 2 to April 8, 2025, and it recovered by April 29, 2025. It returned 4.6% in the year to October 27, 2026. Prices can dip midway, so anyone needing cash before the period ends may not get the full buffer. Each new period also brings a new cap. It had recorded no distributions as of October 27, 2026, so it offers no income. In the SEC's standard $10,000 example, the 0.79% expense ratio costs $81 in year one and $978 over 10 years.
Past results don't predict future returns, and a retirement plan has to account for the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Holders since April 1, 2025 seeking S&P 500 gains up to 13.74% after fees, with 98.42% of losses buffered through March 31, 2027.
- Investors wanting stock exposure with small swings: deepest drop 2.6%, one-year beta (market sensitivity) 0.14, as of October 27, 2026.
- Investors comfortable owning FLEX options rather than stocks, who check the fund's daily outcome updates before investing mid-period.
Look elsewhere if
- Investors seeking full S&P 500 upside, since gains above the 15.32% cap (13.74% after fees) are given up through March 31, 2027.
- Anyone who may need cash before March 31, 2027, since mid-period prices can differ sharply from the buffered outcome.
- Those wanting income or low costs: no distributions were recorded as of October 27, 2026, and the expense ratio is 0.79%.

Questions investors ask
Can you lose money in TAPR?
Yes. The prospectus states plainly that you could lose money. The 100% buffer against losses in the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust applies before fees. It also applies only to investors who hold from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2027. After the 0.79% fee, the buffer is 98.42%. The price can also dip mid-period, and its deepest drop was 2.6%, in April 2025. The protection relies on FLEX options, which carry derivatives and valuation risks.
What is the TAPR ETF upside cap?
TAPR's cap is 15.32% before fees, or 13.74% after its 0.79% annual management fee. It covers the outcome period from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2027. That is the most a full-period holder can earn from gains in the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust. If that ETF rises 50%, the fund still targets 15.32% before fees. When the period ends, the fund rolls into new FLEX options expiring about two years later, with a newly set cap.
What happens if you invest in TAPR after the outcome period starts?
Your results can differ sharply from the stated cap and buffer. Those outcomes apply only to shares held from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2027, measured from the fund's starting value. Someone who enters after the fund has risen has less room before the cap. They could also lose that gain if the S&P 500 ETF falls back. Innovator posts updated outcome figures daily at innovatoretfs.com/tapr, which are worth checking before investing mid-period.
Does TAPR pay dividends?
No. TAPR had recorded no distributions as of October 27, 2026, so it doesn't provide regular income. As of July 31, 2026, it held FLEX options on the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust plus a little cash, not dividend-paying shares. Its return comes from changes in the options' value. Anyone drawing money from it would have to cash in shares. Doing so before March 31, 2027 may not capture the full buffer.
What's the difference between TAPR and SPY?
SPY, the State Street SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust, tracks the S&P 500 Index and carries its full gains and losses. TAPR holds FLEX options on SPY instead. Holders from April 1, 2025 to March 31, 2027 seek SPY's gains up to 15.32% before fees, with a 100% buffer against its losses. TAPR's one-year beta, a gauge of market sensitivity, was 0.14 as of October 27, 2026. It charges 0.79% a year, or $81 in the first year on $10,000 in the SEC's standard example.
