What changed recently

  • Over the three months to Aug 31, 2026, investors withdrew a net $17.8M (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +0.58%, +0.23%, +2.50%.

How it works

RISN does not follow an index. Its adviser, Inspire Investing LLC, uses its own technical analysis to decide whether the large US stock market is in an uptrend or a downtrend. Technical analysis means reading signals from price trends in public market data. In an uptrend, the fund holds large US stocks, which Inspire defines as the largest 10% of the US market. In a downtrend, it can shift into US Treasury bonds held through other firms' ETFs, investment-grade and high-yield corporate bonds, government agency bonds, and gold products such as SPDR Gold Shares (GLD). The goal is growth with lower volatility than large US stocks over the long term.

Every holding must also pass the Inspire Impact Score, a faith-based screen. It excludes companies that Inspire links to abortion, abortifacient or contraceptive drugs, alcohol, cannabis, gambling, embryonic stem cells, labor or sexual exploitation, or in vitro fertilization, among other categories. Only securities that score zero or higher qualify.

Holdings change often. Turnover of 288% means the fund replaced its portfolio almost three times in a year. As of August 31, 2026, it held 28 securities and no derivatives. About 81% was in individual companies, led by Fortinet at 5.9%, and about 18% was in a Schwab short-term fund.

What it really costs

  • RISN charges 0.72% a year.
  • Of that, 0.5% is the management fee; the rest covers other fund expenses.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $74 in the first year and $894 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
RISN$74$230$401$894

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

Its swings have been smaller than the stock market's, but its concentrated, frequently traded, model-driven portfolio carries strategy risk that suits a smaller slice better than a core role.

RISN could add a values-screened, rules-based approach that tries to step out of stocks when trends turn down. Its record shows the limits. The fund launched in July 2020, so it has no history in the 2008 crisis or the 2020 crash. It lost 17.57% in 2022, its worst calendar year. Its deepest drop, 21.9%, ran from December 30, 2021 to October 27, 2023, and it took until November 6, 2024 to recover. Anyone who sold shares for spending during that stretch would have locked in losses. Income is small: the trailing yield was 1.04% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. In the SEC's standard example, the 0.72% expense ratio costs about $74 in the first year and $894 over 10 years on $10,000. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want holdings screened against biblical values, excluding alcohol, gambling, cannabis and abortion-linked companies, and who accept a 0.72% expense ratio for it.
  • People comfortable letting a trend-following model shift money between stocks, bonds and gold, with portfolio turnover of 288% a year.
  • Those seeking stock exposure with smaller swings: beta (sensitivity to market moves) was 0.59 over one year as of October 27, 2026.

Look elsewhere if

  • Investors who need meaningful income; the trailing yield was 1.04% as of October 27, 2026.
  • Those expecting the tactical approach to avoid bear markets; the fund still lost 17.57% in 2022.
  • People wanting broad diversification; it held only 28 securities as of August 31, 2026, with the top 10 making up 52% of assets.

Questions investors ask

Is RISN a biblically responsible ETF?

Yes. The fund's adviser, Inspire Investing LLC, screens every holding with its Inspire Impact Score. The score excludes companies it links to abortion, abortifacient or contraceptive drugs, alcohol, cannabis, gambling, embryonic stem cell work, exploitation and in vitro fertilization, among other categories. Only securities scoring zero or higher qualify. The prospectus warns that the screen may cause the fund to miss opportunities open to unscreened funds, and that other investors may disagree about what counts as a violation.

What stocks does RISN hold?

As of August 31, 2026, RISN held 28 securities and about $71.8 million in net assets. Roughly 81% was in individual US companies and about 18% in a Schwab short-term fund. The largest company holdings were Fortinet (5.9%), Sirius XM (3.7%), Qualys (3.6%), Manhattan Associates (3.5%) and Old Dominion Freight Line (3.5%). The top 10 made up 52% of assets. With turnover of 288%, the list can change quickly.

Does RISN pay dividends?

Yes, RISN pays distributions quarterly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.32 per share, a trailing yield of 1.04%. That is modest, because the fund aims mainly for growth rather than income. Payouts can also vary as the fund moves between stocks, bonds and gold. Gold pays no income, and stocks and bonds pay different amounts.

How has RISN performed compared with its benchmark?

It beat its benchmark over longer periods but lagged in 2025. As of December 31, 2025, RISN returned an average of 5.74% a year over five years and 6.63% a year since its July 2020 launch. The S&P Target Risk Moderate Index returned 4.76% and 5.81% over the same periods. Over the year ending then, RISN returned 10.69% against the index's 13.38%. No closely matched funds turned up from holdings overlap, so the index is the main yardstick.

What is RISN's expense ratio?

RISN's expense ratio is 0.72% a year, according to its prospectus filed March 26, 2026. That includes a 0.50% management fee. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return would cost about $74 after one year, $230 after three years, $401 after five and $894 after ten. Turnover of 288% can add trading costs that the expense ratio doesn't include.
