What changed recently

  • Over the three months to Jun 30, 2026, investors withdrew a net $2.7M (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +12.37%, +3.42%, -1.16%.

How it works

MAVF does not track an index. ETF Architect offers the fund, and Matrix Asset Advisors, the sub-adviser, chooses the stocks. Matrix looks for value companies using measures such as dividend yield, earnings-to-price, sales-to-price and book-to-market (share price compared with the company's net worth on paper). It focuses on large companies worth at least $4 billion when bought. At least 80% of net assets must go to companies with value traits, judged by earnings-to-price and book-to-market.

Matrix calls its method Classic Valuation Analysis, built on Benjamin Graham's value-investing principles. Its models compare a company's earnings growth, dividend growth, return on equity and book value with their levels over the past six to ten years, now, and projected for the next two years. The result is an "intrinsic value": the price the manager thinks the stock should trade at. The estimate is usually updated each quarter. Companies also need manageable debt and free cash flow above their needs. A stock is generally sold when it reaches intrinsic value, when its finances weaken, or when a better option turns up in the same industry. There is no fixed rebalancing schedule. Portfolio turnover was 29%.

The fund is "non-diversified," meaning it can put more in a single stock than a diversified fund. As of June 30, 2026, it held 27 stocks, and the top 10 made up 51.19% of assets. Financials were 24.6%, technology 22.9% and communication services 14.7%. It held no derivatives and 2.58% in cash.

What it really costs

  • MAVF charges 0.75% a year.
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $77 in the first year and $930 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

It is a concentrated, non-diversified, actively managed stock portfolio of about 27 companies that costs 0.75% a year, so it fits better as a smaller add-on than as a foundation.

The ETF shares launched on February 24, 2025, but the prospectus reports returns back to 2016. The worst calendar year shown was 2022, with a 20.42% loss. It also lost 11.04% in 2018. Its worst quarter was a 27.68% drop in the three months ended March 31, 2020. Someone selling shares to cover spending in years like those would have locked in losses. Price data here start on June 9, 2026. In that window, the deepest drop was 4%, from August 4 to September 16, 2026, and it had not recovered as of October 27, 2026. The fund pays distributions once a year, and its trailing 12-month yield was 0% as of October 27, 2026. In the SEC's $10,000 example, costs come to $77 after one year and $930 after 10. Past results don't predict future ones, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want a hand-picked, Benjamin Graham-style value portfolio of about 27 large companies rather than a broad value index.
  • Those willing to pay 0.75% a year for active stock picking: $77 in the first year on $10,000 in the SEC's example.
  • Long-term holders who can sit through losses like 2022's 20.42% decline and the 27.68% drop in the first quarter of 2020.

Look elsewhere if

  • People who need regular income: the fund pays distributions once a year, and its trailing 12-month yield was 0% as of October 27, 2026.
  • Investors who want wide diversification: the fund is non-diversified, and its top 10 holdings were 51.19% of assets as of June 30, 2026.
  • Anyone who wants value exposure without big tech: Alphabet, Microsoft, Apple and Amazon were all top-five holdings as of June 30, 2026.

Questions investors ask

Does MAVF pay a dividend?

MAVF pays distributions once a year, but it is not built as an income fund. Its trailing 12-month yield was 0% as of October 27, 2026. The fund aims for total return, meaning share-price growth plus some income, and the manager buys stocks that pay dividends and stocks that don't. For steady cash flow, it is worth comparing with funds that focus on dividends and pay more often.

What is the MAVF expense ratio?

MAVF's expense ratio is 0.75% a year, according to the prospectus filed October 26, 2026. All of it is the management fee, and there is no fee waiver. The SEC's standard example assumes $10,000 invested, a 5% annual return and shares sold at the end of each period. On that basis, costs total $77 after one year, $240 after three, $417 after five and $930 after 10. That is the price of active stock picking. Broad index funds often charge much less.

Why does a value ETF like MAVF own Alphabet and Microsoft?

Matrix judges value by comparing a stock's price with its own estimate of the company's intrinsic value, not by sector labels. As of June 30, 2026, the largest holdings were Alphabet (7.8%), Microsoft (6.34%) and Apple (6.26%), followed by Generac (5.76%) and Amazon (5.17%). Banks PNC, JPMorgan Chase and Wells Fargo were also in the top 10. The largest sector weights were financials, technology and communication services.

How has MAVF performed over 10 years?

The prospectus shows MAVF returned an average of 12.64% a year over 10 years, 14.47% a year over five years and 22.05% over one year, all as of December 31, 2025. Most of that record comes from before the ETF shares launched on February 24, 2025. Calendar-year results ranged from a 32.03% gain in 2021 to a 20.42% loss in 2022. The price return was 3.9% year to date as of October 27, 2026.

Is MAVF an index fund?

No. MAVF is actively managed and does not track an index. Its sub-adviser, Matrix Asset Advisors, picks stocks using Classic Valuation Analysis, a method based on Benjamin Graham's value-investing ideas. It generally sells a stock when it reaches its estimated value or its finances weaken. The fund held 27 stocks as of June 30, 2026, and it is classified as non-diversified. That means a few holdings can move its results more than in a broad index fund. Net assets were about $90.6 million.
