How it works
IDGT tracks the S&P Data Center, Tower REIT and Communications Equipment Index, built by S&P Dow Jones Indices. To qualify, a company must trade in the U.S., have a float-adjusted market value of at least $300 million and trade a median of $2 million a day. Float-adjusted market value counts only the shares available to the public. S&P sorts companies by their main business. Tier 1a is cell tower owners. Tier 1b is data center owners. Tier 2 is communications equipment, communications chips and data storage equipment.
Every Tier 1a and Tier 1b company is included. If there are fewer than 50 of them, the largest Tier 2 companies fill the open spots, up to 50 stocks in total. Towers and data centers must each make up at least 25% of the index, and Tier 2 can be no more than 45%. No single tower or data center stock can exceed 10%, and no single Tier 2 stock can exceed 4.5%. The index is reviewed each December and rebalanced in March, June and September. It had 25 securities as of March 31, 2026.
BlackRock uses representative sampling. This means the fund may not own every stock in the index, but it aims to match the index's overall profile, and it keeps at least 80% of net assets in index stocks. The fund may lend out securities worth up to one-third of its assets. The 12.5% cash shown in its June 30, 2026 holdings was likely collateral from that lending. Turnover was 80%.
What it really costs
- IDGT charges 0.37% a year, versus an average of 0.41% for the similar funds below (5th of 9, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $38 in the first year and $468 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| IDGT | $38 | $119 | $208 | $468 |
In a retirement portfolio
It is a concentrated, 25-stock bet on one theme that moves more than the market and pays little income.
IDGT adds a focused stake in the towers, data centers and hardware that carry internet traffic, but the ride can be rough. Its one-year beta was 1.34 as of October 27, 2026. That means it tended to swing more than the market. No fund results from the 2008 crisis are available here. In 2020 it fell 21.4% in the first quarter but ended the year up 8.8%. It lost 17.9% in 2022 and another 6.1% in 2023. Since December 2023, its deepest drop was 22.8%, from January to April 2025, and it recovered in about 3.5 months. Anyone selling shares in a year like 2022 could lock in losses.
The 0.8% yield, paid quarterly, provides little income. The 0.37% fee is moderate. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want a focused stake in data centers and cell towers. The largest holdings were Equinix, Digital Realty and American Tower as of June 30, 2026.
- People who want digital real estate and networking hardware in one fund at 0.37% a year, below the 0.41% average of similar funds.
- Investors keeping a small side position who can live with swings like the 22.8% drop between January and April 2025.
Look elsewhere if
- Income seekers. The trailing yield was 0.8% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. That is little cash for regular withdrawals.
- Investors who want broad diversification. The fund holds about 25 stocks, and the top 10 made up about 60% of assets as of June 30, 2026.
- Cost-focused real estate investors. XLRE charges 0.08%, though it covers the whole real estate sector rather than digital infrastructure.

Questions investors ask
What does IDGT invest in?
IDGT invests in U.S.-listed companies that own data centers and cell towers or make the networking gear that connects them. As of June 30, 2026, its largest holdings were Equinix (8.7%), Digital Realty (8.3%), American Tower (7.7%), Uniti Group (6.9%) and Crown Castle (5.3%). It also held equipment and chip makers such as Arista Networks, Cisco, Qualcomm and Ciena. Sector labels covered only about half the fund, and real estate (34.9%) outweighed technology (16.9%).
Does IDGT pay a dividend?
Yes. IDGT pays dividends quarterly. In the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.91 per share, a yield of 0.8%. That is a small amount of income for a fund with so many real estate holdings. The prospectus warns that companies don't have to keep paying dividends, so the payout can shrink. The fund may suit growth investors more than people who need steady income.
What's the difference between IDGT and DTCR?
Both funds focus on digital infrastructure, and about 41% of their holdings overlap. That makes Global X Data Center And Digital Infrastructure ETF (DTCR) the closest alternative. IDGT costs less: 0.37% a year versus 0.50%. DTCR is larger, with about $2.1 billion in net assets as of August 31, 2026. IDGT had about $503 million as of June 30, 2026. In the year to October 27, 2026, IDGT returned 26.4% and DTCR returned 16.5%.
What is IDGT's expense ratio?
IDGT's expense ratio is 0.37%, according to its prospectus filed July 27, 2026. All of it is the management fee, and there is no fee waiver. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return would cost about $38 in the first year, $208 over five years and $468 over ten. That is below the 0.41% average of similar funds. XLRE, a broad real estate fund, charges 0.08%.
How has IDGT performed over 10 years?
IDGT returned an average of 9.49% a year over the 10 years ended December 31, 2025. The S&P Total Market Index returned 14.22% a year over the same period. Over five years, the fund averaged 8.17% against 13.07% for the index. Results were uneven. It gained 41.84% in 2021, then lost 17.85% in 2022 and 6.05% in 2023. Year to date through October 27, 2026, it was up 33.8%.
