How it works
FDRV aims to match, before fees, the Fidelity Electric Vehicles and Future Transportation Index, a rules-based index Fidelity created. The index draws from companies of any size worldwide that produce electric or self-driving vehicles, their parts, technology or energy systems, or pursue other changes to transportation. It holds about 25 “future transportation technologies” stocks and about 25 “future transportation enablers.”
After quality screens, stocks are ranked by market share, measured in dollar revenue, and by a relevance score that blends theme-related revenue with natural language processing (NLP), software that scans company documents for keywords. Companies earning over 50% of revenue from these activities, or holding at least 5% market share, make up at least 85% of the index; others generally get lower, capped weights. Each stock is weighted by adjusted market capitalization (stock market value), subject to caps. As of June 30, 2026, the top 10 holdings made up about 41% of assets.
The fund keeps at least 80% of assets in index stocks or depositary receipts (certificates representing foreign shares). It mostly replicates the index, holding its stocks directly, though it may skip some. Derivatives are allowed; on June 30, 2026, it held a tiny Nasdaq-100 futures position. Turnover was 51%, meaning about half the portfolio changed over a year. There is no leverage or options strategy.
What it really costs
- FDRV charges 0.39% a year, versus an average of 0.6% for the similar funds below (1st of 4, cheapest first).
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $40 in the first year and $493 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| FDRV | $40 | $125 | $219 | $493 |
In a retirement portfolio
It is a narrow, volatile bet on one theme, with a meaningful stake in China and a 63.9% drop that had not been recovered as of October 27, 2026.
FDRV could add concentrated exposure to electric-vehicle and self-driving companies in the US, China and Europe, with steep swings. Launched in October 2021, it has no track record from the 2008 or 2020 crashes. In the 2022 bear market (January 3 to October 12) it fell 45.5%; 2022 was its worst calendar year, at -44.2%. Its deepest drop, 63.9% from November 8, 2021, to April 8, 2025, was not recovered as of October 27, 2026. Withdrawing from it during such a stretch would lock in large losses.
Income is modest: dividends are paid quarterly, and the trailing 12-month yield was 1.45% as of October 27, 2026. The 0.39% expense ratio, about $40 in year one on $10,000 under the SEC's standard example, is below the 0.60% average of three similar funds. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should weigh the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors wanting low-cost exposure to electric and self-driving vehicle companies; its 0.39% fee undercuts HAIL (0.45%), DRIV (0.68%) and MOTO (0.68%).
- Those seeking global exposure to the theme: only about 47% sat in US companies as of June 30, 2026, with 13.6% in China.
- Long-term investors able to hold a small, higher-risk slice through swings like 2022's 44.2% loss and 2025's 24.1% gain.
Look elsewhere if
- Retirees who may need to withdraw in a downturn: its 63.9% drop from November 2021 to April 2025 was unrecovered as of October 27, 2026.
- Income seekers: the trailing 12-month yield was 1.45% as of October 27, 2026; the index picks stocks by theme, not dividends.
- Investors wary of small funds: net assets were about $28 million as of June 30, 2026, after roughly $1.9 million of outflows over three months.

What does FDRV invest in?
FDRV invests in about 50 companies worldwide tied to electric and self-driving vehicles and the future of transportation, following the Fidelity Electric Vehicles and Future Transportation Index. As of June 30, 2026, its largest holdings were Tesla (4.9%), Uber (4.9%), Contemporary Amperex Technology (4.8%), Infineon Technologies (4.6%) and NXP Semiconductors (4.3%), with BYD and Rivian also in the top 10. About 47% sat in US companies, 13.6% in China and 11% in Cayman Islands-registered companies such as NIO and XPeng.
Is FDRV a good long-term investment?
FDRV's record through October 27, 2026, has been weak and volatile. Over the five years to that date, it lost an average of 10.6% a year, about 43% in total. It fell 44.2% in 2022 and gained 24.1% in 2025, and its deepest drop, 63.9% from November 2021 to April 2025, had not been recovered by then. Its 0.39% fee is low, but the electric-vehicle theme drives results. It may suit only a small, higher-risk slice of a portfolio, and past returns don't predict future ones.
Does FDRV pay dividends?
Yes, FDRV pays dividends quarterly, but the amounts are small. Over the 12 months through October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.22 per share, a trailing yield (based on past payouts) of 1.45%. The index picks companies for their links to electric vehicles and future transportation, not for their dividends, so income is a by-product rather than a goal. Someone looking for steady portfolio income would get little from this fund on its own.
What's the difference between FDRV and HAIL?
The main differences are cost and three-year results. FDRV charges 0.39% a year, versus 0.45% for SPDR S&P Kensho Smart Mobility ETF (HAIL), and about 25% of their holdings overlap, based on the funds' latest SEC holdings reports. Through October 27, 2026, one-year returns were nearly identical, at -12.6% for FDRV and -12.5% for HAIL, but over three years HAIL averaged 9.5% a year versus 1.8% for FDRV. Both were small, with net assets of about $28 million and $22 million as of June 30, 2026.
What is FDRV's expense ratio?
FDRV's expense ratio, the yearly fee taken from fund assets, is 0.39%, according to its prospectus filed October 27, 2026. In the SEC's standard example, which assumes $10,000 invested, a 5% annual return and shares cashed out at the end of each period, total costs would be about $40 after one year, $219 after five years and $493 after ten. That is lower than SPDR S&P Kensho Smart Mobility ETF (0.45%), Global X Autonomous & Electric Vehicles ETF (0.68%) and SmartETFs Smart Transportation & Technology ETF (0.68%).
