How it works
ESUM is not an index fund. Eventide, the fund's adviser, chooses the stocks itself. It measures the fund against the Bloomberg U.S. 3000 Total Return Index, a broad gauge of the US stock market, and tries to limit "tracking error," which means how far the fund's returns drift from that benchmark. At least 80% of assets go into US-based companies. Up to 20% can go into foreign firms, including American Depositary Receipts (ADRs), which are US-traded certificates for foreign shares. The fund aims to hold at least 100 companies and held 204 as of July 31, 2026.
Every potential holding must pass Eventide's faith-based screens before it can be bought. The screens look at respect for life at all stages, avoiding addictive products and weapons, fair treatment of employees and customers, protecting children from violent entertainment, and environmental practices compared with industry peers. If a company later falls short, the fund may keep it while Eventide researches or talks with management. The prospectus says the screens may not catch every company.
Eventide uses quantitative risk tools to size positions. The goal is to keep sector, industry and style tilts, such as growth or value, close to the benchmark. Trades happen as needed rather than on a fixed schedule, and turnover was 56%. As of July 31, 2026, the fund held no derivatives and uses no leverage or options.
What it really costs
- ESUM charges 0.39% a year.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $40 in the first year and $493 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ESUM | $40 | $125 | $219 | $493 |
In a retirement portfolio
It holds about 200 US stocks across sectors and is managed to move closely with the broad US market, so it could serve as a main US stock fund for investors who want faith-based screens.
ESUM launched in December 2024, so it has no record through the 2008, 2020 or 2022 downturns. Price history starts August 29, 2025. Within that history, its deepest drop was 8.1%, from January 28 to March 30, 2026, and it had recovered by April 17, 2026. That is a mild test. Its beta of 0.96 over the year to October 27, 2026 means it moved almost in step with the market. So in a real bear market it could fall about as much as US stocks overall, which would hurt anyone forced to sell shares at low prices. Income is small: a 0.97% trailing yield as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly. In the SEC's standard $10,000 example, the 0.39% fee adds up to $493 over 10 years. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors who want broad US stock exposure screened by Christian values, with 204 holdings as of July 31, 2026.
- Long-term holders comfortable with market-like swings; its beta was 0.96 over the year to October 27, 2026.
- Values-based investors willing to pay 0.39% a year for Eventide's active screening and company engagement.
Look elsewhere if
- Those seeking meaningful income: the trailing yield was 0.97% as of October 27, 2026, paid quarterly.
- Investors wanting a long track record; it launched in December 2024 and has not been through a major bear market.
- Anyone uneasy with tech concentration: as of July 31, 2026, NVIDIA alone was 7.0% of assets and technology about 27% of classified holdings.

Questions investors ask
Is ESUM a Christian ETF?
Yes. Eventide screens every potential holding using values that the prospectus describes as inspired by the Christian faith and rooted in a biblical worldview. The screens aim to avoid companies tied to gambling, pornography, tobacco, alcohol and weapons. They also weigh respect for life at all stages, fair treatment of workers and customers, and environmental stewardship. The prospectus warns that these screens could cause the fund to lag funds without them, and that they may not catch every company.
What is the expense ratio of ESUM?
ESUM's expense ratio is 0.39% a year, according to the prospectus filed August 27, 2026. All of it is the management fee, and there is no fee waiver. In the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested with a 5% annual return would cost about $40 after one year, $219 after five years and $493 after ten years, assuming the shares are sold at the end of each period.
Does ESUM pay dividends?
Yes, ESUM pays dividends quarterly. Over the 12 months to October 27, 2026, it paid about $0.30 per share, a trailing yield of 0.97%. That is a modest amount of income. It reflects a growth-oriented portfolio led by technology companies. The fund's stated objective is long-term capital appreciation, not income, so most of any return is expected to come from rising share prices.
What are ESUM's top holdings?
As of July 31, 2026, ESUM's largest holding was NVIDIA at 7.0% of assets. Next came Broadcom at 2.8%, ExxonMobil at 1.9%, Micron Technology at 1.7% and Advanced Micro Devices at 1.7%. Automatic Data Processing, Eli Lilly, Home Depot, Union Pacific and American Express completed the top 10. Together, those ten made up 22.5% of the fund, spread across 204 holdings. About 91.6% of assets were in US-based companies.
How has ESUM performed compared with the stock market?
ESUM trailed its benchmark in its first full calendar year. The prospectus reports a 12.19% return for 2025. Over the year ended December 31, 2025, the Bloomberg US 3000 Total Return Index gained 13.12%, a figure that has no fees deducted. Based on market price, ESUM returned 13.1% over the year to October 27, 2026, and 16.3% for 2026 through that date, which is not a full year. No similar funds were identified for comparison, and the record is too short to judge long-term results.
