The short version
Battleshares TSLA vs F ETF (ELON) is an actively managed, leveraged fund betting Tesla will outperform Ford. It targets Tesla exposure of about 180% to 220% of its assets, offset by a short position (a bet on falling prices) in Ford of about 80% to 120%. It may interest traders with that view, but its 1.29% expense ratio and 67.2% drop in its first month show how costly and volatile it can be.

How it works
ELON, issued by Tidal Financial Group, does not track an index. Its adviser actively runs a single paired trade. One side is a leveraged long position in Tesla, which the adviser sees as a new auto leader in electric vehicles and energy storage. The other is a short position (a bet on falling prices) in Ford, a legacy leader in fossil-fuel cars. The fund targets Tesla exposure of +180% to +220% of net assets and Ford exposure of -80% to -120%, for net long exposure (long minus short) of 100% to 120%.
It can own Tesla shares, sell Ford shares short, and use swaps (contracts that pass a stock's gains or losses to the fund) and listed options. It holds short-term US Treasuries as collateral. As of September 30, 2025, its holdings report showed derivative contracts on Tesla and Ford plus about 5.45% in cash. The manager rebalances often to stay within range, reacting to volatility, company news and price momentum, so turnover is expected to be high.
If Tesla falls while Ford rises, the fund loses on both sides at once, magnified by leverage. Because the manager rebalances to keep leverage in range, returns over months or years can differ sharply from twice Tesla's move minus Ford's, often for the worse in choppy markets. The fund is non-diversified, so two stocks drive its results.
What it really costs
- ELON charges 1.29% a year.
- Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $131 in the first year and $— over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
| Cost of $10,000 (SEC example) | 1 yr | 3 yrs | 5 yrs | 10 yrs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ELON | $131 | $409 | $— | $— |
Structure and tax notes
- Resets its exposure every day. Over periods longer than a day, compounding means returns can differ sharply from 2× the index — usually worse in choppy markets. Built for short-term trading, not buy-and-hold.
In a retirement portfolio
Despite its stated long-term goal, it is a leveraged bet on two stocks whose 67.2% plunge in its first month shows swings few retirement portfolios can absorb.
ELON launched February 12, 2025, so it was not around for the 2008 financial crisis, the 2020 COVID crash or the 2022 bear market, and it has no full calendar year on record. It fell 67.2% between February 13 and March 10, 2025, and did not regain its peak until August 28, 2026, about 17.6 months after the low. A retiree selling shares for spending money in that stretch would have locked in heavy losses. Even over the year to October 27, 2026, when it returned 142%, it suffered a 34.2% drop along the way.
The fund recorded no distributions, so it provides no income. Its 1.29% expense ratio works out to about $131 in the first year and $409 over three years on $10,000, in the SEC's standard example. Past results don't predict future ones, and any plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.
Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere
May suit
- Investors convinced Tesla will outperform Ford, accepting leveraged targets of 180% to 220% of assets long Tesla and 80% to 120% betting against Ford.
- Experienced investors comfortable with wild swings: over the year to October 27, 2026, it returned 142%, with volatility (price swings) of 80.6%.
- Those wanting a small, speculative growth position who accept paying 1.29% a year, or $131 on $10,000 in the SEC's first-year example.
Look elsewhere if
- Retirees who need income or diversification: the fund has recorded no distributions and bets on just two automakers, Tesla and Ford.
- Buy-and-hold investors averse to deep losses: it fell 67.2% from February 13 to March 10, 2025, needing 17.6 months to recover.
- Investors wanting an established fund: net assets were about $1.1 million as of September 30, 2025, and its record spans about 1.7 years.

Questions investors ask
Is ELON ETF good for retirement?
For most retirement portfolios, it is a poor fit. ELON is a leveraged bet that Tesla will outperform Ford, with Tesla exposure of about 180% to 220% of net assets. It fell 67.2% between February 13 and March 10, 2025, and needed about 17.6 months from that low to regain its peak. It had recorded no distributions as of October 27, 2026, and charges a 1.29% expense ratio. Its stated goal is long-term growth, but the swings are extreme.
How risky is the ELON ETF?
Very risky. As of October 27, 2026, its one-year volatility, a measure of how widely returns swing, was 80.6%. It returned 142% over that year yet still suffered a 34.2% drop along the way. In the three months to September 30, 2025, its monthly returns ranged from a loss of 11.65% to a gain of 70.17%. Its deepest fall was 67.2%, in early 2025. The same leverage drives both the gains and the losses.
Does ELON ETF pay dividends?
No. ELON had recorded no distributions as of October 27, 2026. Any return comes from changes in its share price. That price reflects how its leveraged Tesla position performs against its Ford short, after the fund's 1.29% expense ratio. It is not designed to produce regular income. Investors who need cash from it would have to sell shares, and in a fund this volatile that could mean selling after a steep drop.
What happens to ELON if Tesla stock drops?
ELON is likely to fall, often by more than Tesla does. The fund targets Tesla exposure of about 180% to 220% of net assets, so a Tesla drop hits it roughly twice as hard before the Ford short is counted. If Ford falls at the same time, the short can soften the loss, but net long exposure of 100% to 120% means the fund still tends to fall. If Ford rises instead, the fund loses on both positions at once.
What's the difference between ELON and owning Tesla stock?
ELON adds leverage, a Ford short and a fee. Owning Tesla shares directly gives plain, unleveraged exposure to one company with no fund expenses. ELON targets about 180% to 220% Tesla exposure, offset by a Ford short of about 80% to 120%, and charges 1.29% a year. In the SEC's standard example, that is about $409 over three years on $10,000. Because its leverage is rebalanced, its long-run returns can differ sharply from twice Tesla's move minus Ford's.
