What changed recently

  • Over the three months to Jun 30, 2026, investors added a net $78.6M (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: +0.72%, +5.75%, +8.17%.

How it works

EDGU does not track an index. At least 80% of its net assets go into US stocks, and shares of other stock funds count toward that. The adviser, 3EDGE Asset Management, believes that choosing sectors and company sizes matters more than picking individual stocks. Its own model weighs valuations, economic data and investor behavior to find sectors it sees as undervalued. It sorts sectors by the 11-sector Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS) and can tilt the fund toward value or growth stocks.

The fund puts these views into practice by buying ETFs. As of June 30, 2026, it held 13 funds, and the top 10 made up 95.7% of assets. The largest were the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF (24.0%), Invesco QQQ Trust (23.7%) and Avantis US Small Cap Value (14.8%), followed by the Financial (6.6%) and Communication Services (5.8%) Select Sector SPDR ETFs. It held no derivatives.

The prospectus also lets the fund use defined-outcome ETFs. These are funds built to deliver a set range of gains and losses over a fixed period. None appeared in the June 30, 2026 holdings. The fund sells a position when it hits a target price or when the model flags it as overvalued or at risk of a sharp drop. Turnover was 159%, which means the fund traded more than its entire portfolio's value in a year. Trading that heavily can raise costs and taxable gains.

What it really costs

  • EDGU charges 0.91% a year, versus an average of 0.86% for the similar funds below (6th of 8, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $93 in the first year and $1,120 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
EDGU$93$290$504$1,120
SEC standard example: $10,000 invested, 5% annual return, shares sold at the end of each period.

Structure and tax notes

  • Invests in other funds rather than directly in stocks or bonds, so its holdings are those funds.

In a retirement portfolio

RoleSatellite (higher risk)

EDGU is a new, heavily traded, actively managed fund with about half its assets in technology-focused ETFs, so it fits better as a smaller add-on than as a foundation.

EDGU launched in October 2024, so it has no record from the 2008, 2020 or 2022 downturns. In its only full calendar year, 2025, it returned 14.69%, while the S&P 500 returned 17.88%. Its deepest drop was 17.6%, from February 19 to April 8, 2025. It recovered by July 22, 2025, about 3.4 months later. Anyone forced to sell in April 2025 would have locked in that loss. Its stated goal is to limit losses, but its one-year beta of 0.98 shows it moved almost in step with the market. (Beta measures how much a fund moves when the market moves.)

Income is small: a 0.66% trailing yield, paid quarterly, as of October 27, 2026. In the SEC's standard $10,000 example, costs come to $1,120 over 10 years. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors wanting 3EDGE Asset Management to rotate among US sector and size ETFs, aiming for gains while limiting losses in declines.
  • Those comfortable with a tech-heavy mix of ETFs, led by Technology Select Sector SPDR (24%) and Invesco QQQ (23.7%) as of June 30, 2026.
  • Investors who accept stock-like swings without a fixed loss buffer; the worst drop was 17.6% between February 19 and April 8, 2025.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: the 0.91% expense ratio tops the 0.86% average of similar buffer ETFs; the SEC's $10,000 example shows $1,120 over 10 years.
  • Those wanting a long record: the adviser's first registered fund launched October 3, 2024, and trailed the S&P 500 in 2025 (14.69% vs 17.88%).
  • Income seekers and taxable-account holders: the yield was 0.66% as of October 27, 2026, and 159% yearly turnover may trigger taxable capital gains.

Questions investors ask

Is EDGU a buffer ETF?

No, not in the usual sense. EDGU aims to limit losses, but it has no built-in buffer or cap. It is an actively managed fund that holds other ETFs. The prospectus lets it own defined-outcome ETFs, but its June 30, 2026 holdings were all sector and broad stock funds. It fell 17.6% between February and April 2025, and its one-year beta was 0.98, close to the market's.

What does EDGU invest in?

EDGU invests in other ETFs rather than individual stocks. As of June 30, 2026, it held 13 funds. The largest were the Technology Select Sector SPDR ETF at 24.0%, Invesco QQQ Trust at 23.7% and Avantis US Small Cap Value at 14.8%. The rest was spread across sector SPDR funds for financials, communication services, industrials, consumer discretionary, health care, energy, consumer staples, utilities, materials and real estate.

Has EDGU beaten the S&P 500?

Not in its first full year. The prospectus shows EDGU returned 14.69% in 2025, while the S&P 500 Total Return Index returned 17.88%. Its strongest quarter was a 7.59% gain in the quarter ending September 30, 2025, and its weakest was a 2.88% loss in the quarter ending March 31, 2025. As of October 27, 2026, it was up 12.2% for the year to date and 10.9% over one year.

Does EDGU pay dividends?

Yes, but not much. EDGU pays distributions quarterly. Its trailing 12-month yield was 0.66% as of October 27, 2026, which works out to about $0.21 per share. The payouts come from the dividends of the ETFs it holds, many of which are growth-heavy funds such as the Technology Select Sector SPDR and Invesco QQQ. Investors who need regular income would get little of it here.

EDGU vs BUFR: what's the difference?

The two funds use different strategies. BUFR, the FT Vest Laddered Buffer ETF, is a defined-outcome fund built to absorb part of a market loss over set periods in exchange for limited upside. EDGU instead rotates among sector ETFs based on its adviser's model. BUFR charges 0.95% against EDGU's 0.91%, and it is far larger, at $10.5 billion as of August 31, 2026. As of October 27, 2026, BUFR's one-year return was 11.6%, compared with 10.9% for EDGU.
