The short version

3EDGE Dynamic Hard Assets ETF (EDGH) is an actively managed fund of funds. It holds other funds tied to gold, silver, broad commodities, farm commodities and inflation-protected Treasury bonds (TIPS). Its manager shifts the mix using a proprietary model and may use options to limit losses. Its 1.01% expense ratio is high for an ETF, and its record is short because it launched in October 2024.

What changed recently

  • Over the three months to Jun 30, 2026, investors added a net $27.8M (creations minus redemptions, per the N-PORT report).
  • Monthly total returns reported for that quarter: -7.42%, -1.74%, +2.28%.

How it works

EDGH does not track an index. 3EDGE Asset Management picks holdings using its own model of global markets, which blends valuation, economic data and investor behavior. The fund must keep at least 80% of net assets in hard-asset exposure. That includes precious metals, broad, energy and farm commodity baskets, REITs, commodity-producing companies and TIPS. It gets this exposure through other funds and does not hold metal or commodities directly. The manager cuts a position when it reaches a target price or the model flags it as overvalued or risky.

As of June 30, 2026, the fund held seven funds. They were a USCF SummerHaven commodity fund (23.0%), Harbor Commodity All Weather (22.5%), Sprott Physical Gold Trust (20.8%), the iShares 0-5 Year TIPS Bond ETF (9.9%), an Invesco agriculture commodity fund (9.6%), Sprott Physical Gold and Silver Trust (9.2%) and a Vanguard short-term TIPS fund (4.7%).

The prospectus also allows options, which are contracts to buy or sell an asset at a set price. The fund may use a "collar": it gives up some upside to pay for downside protection. It says it won't typically use derivatives for leverage, and it held none as of June 30, 2026. The fund is non-diversified, so it can concentrate in a few holdings. It also trades often, with portfolio turnover of 225%.

What it really costs

  • EDGH charges 1.01% a year, versus an average of 0.86% for the similar funds below (8th of 8, cheapest first).
  • Using the prospectus's standard example, $10,000 invested would cost about $103 in the first year and $1,236 over 10 years (assuming a 5% annual return).
Cost of $10,000 (SEC example)1 yr3 yrs5 yrs10 yrs
EDGH$103$322$558$1,236

Structure and tax notes

  • Invests in other funds rather than directly in stocks or bonds, so its holdings are those funds.

In a retirement portfolio

RoleInflation or crisis hedge

It mainly holds gold, commodity and short-term TIPS funds, which are assets often used to offset inflation and stock market stress.

EDGH could add gold, commodities and short-term TIPS to a stock-heavy portfolio. Over one year it had a beta of 0.31, meaning its price moved much less than the stock market. But its history is short. It launched in October 2024, so it has no record from the 2008, 2020 or 2022 sell-offs. Its only full calendar year, 2025, returned 29.11%, compared with 17.88% for the S&P 500. Its deepest drop was 12.5%, from May 12 to June 24, 2026, and it had not recovered as of October 27, 2026. Anyone who sells during a slump like that locks in the loss. Income is small: a 1.08% yield, paid once a year. Under the SEC's standard example, $10,000 would cost $1,236 over 10 years. Past results don't predict the future, and a plan should look at the whole portfolio, not one fund.

Who it may suit — and who should look elsewhere

May suit

  • Investors who want gold, silver, broad commodities, farm commodities and short-term TIPS in one ticker, with a manager shifting the mix.
  • Those adding a small hard-asset sleeve that moved little with stocks: a one-year beta of 0.31 as of October 27, 2026.
  • Holders comfortable with active, frequent trading (225% turnover) and a track record that only began in October 2024.

Look elsewhere if

  • Cost-focused investors: the 1.01% expense ratio is high, and the fund invests through other funds rather than owning assets directly.
  • Income seekers: the yield was 1.08% as of October 27, 2026, and the fund pays only once a year.
  • Those wanting proof through bear markets: no 2008, 2020 or 2022 history, and its 12.5% drop hadn't recovered by October 27, 2026.

Questions investors ask

Is EDGH a good inflation hedge?

It is built for that job, but its record is too short to judge. EDGH holds funds tied to gold, silver, commodities and inflation-protected Treasury bonds. These are assets that investors often turn to when prices rise. It returned 29.11% in 2025, its only full calendar year. But it launched in October 2024 and has not been through a major bear market or a long stretch of inflation. Its deepest drop was 12.5%, from May to June 2026.

What does EDGH invest in?

EDGH owns other funds, not individual stocks or physical metal. As of June 30, 2026, it held seven funds. The largest were a USCF SummerHaven commodity fund (23.0%), Harbor Commodity All Weather (22.5%) and Sprott Physical Gold Trust (20.8%). It also held two short-term TIPS funds from iShares and Vanguard, an Invesco agriculture commodity fund, and Sprott Physical Gold and Silver Trust. The manager can change this mix often.

Does EDGH pay dividends?

Yes, but not much, and only once a year. The trailing 12-month payout was $0.36 per share, a yield of about 1.08% as of October 27, 2026. The fund aims for capital growth with limited losses, not income. Most of its holdings are gold and commodity funds, and those pay little or no income. Its TIPS funds provide some interest.

What is EDGH's expense ratio?

EDGH's expense ratio is 1.01%, according to its prospectus filed January 28, 2026. That is high for an ETF. Under the SEC's standard example, $10,000 invested with a 5% yearly return would cost about $103 in the first year and $322 over three years. Over five years it would cost $558, and over 10 years $1,236. The fund's active, high-turnover approach is part of what you pay for.

How is EDGH different from buffer ETFs like BUFR?

They follow different strategies, so BUFR is not a close alternative. FT Vest Laddered Buffer ETF (BUFR) uses options to limit losses on US stocks over set periods. EDGH holds gold, commodity and TIPS funds and is managed actively. BUFR charges 0.95%, compared with EDGH's 1.01%. As of October 27, 2026, BUFR returned 11.6% over one year and EDGH returned 18.8%. Different holdings drove those results.
